took for knowledge , and it was therefore with great diffidence that he accepted the position , but he had determined to use all the ability and determination he had to maintain the reputation of the Lodge , in which object he knew he should be successful if he received the able assistance 01 his Officers .

Bro . J . W . Lloyd submitted the toast of the Masonic Charities . He drew particular attention to the Herefordshire Masonic Charity , in which the Lodge had altogether ten votes . Bro . Alfred Parker , who replied , was very pleased to say the Herefordshire Masonic Charity was in a very flourishing condition . The Lodge had

voted to that Charity a capitation grant of 2 s 6 d per head and besides a yearly grant , gave the installation subscriptions also . By the aid of this Charity , already one boy was sent to a public school , and an aged poor Brother maintained . He believed that eventually this Charity would become a very great success indeed .

CENTURION LODGE , No . 2322 . THE annual meeting and festival of St . John in connection with this Lodge took place at the Victoria Hotel , Manchester , on Monday , 7 th inst ., Bro . Surg . Capt . Arthur H . Smith W . M ., there being a capital attendance of . members and visitors . After the confirmation of minutes , a successful ballot was taken for Bro .

Captain Thomas Arthur Jones , 3 rd V . B . Cheshire Regiment , Virtue Lodge , No . 152 , this being followed by the installation into the chair of K . S . of Bro . Major George Kershaw S . W . The ceremony was very ably performed by Bro . Smith I . P . M ., assisted by Past Masters Col . Hy . L . Rocca P . P . G . J . D ., Col . J . Howarth Clark , J . P ., P . P . G . D ., Capt . Jas . Andrew P . P . G . D . C ; and Fred Hilton 1458 W . M . 2363 P . P . G . D . C .

The Officers for 1896-97 are Bros . Surg . Capt . A . H . Smith I . P . M ., Capt . T . W . Ashworth S . W ., Surg . Capt . J . J . Kent Fairclough J . W ., Lt .-Col . J . Howarth Clark , J . The following propositions having been duly submitted to the meeting , were voted upon and carried , viz ., by Bro . Major John Heap P . P . S . G . D ., " That the sum of ten guineas be contributed to the School for Girls , London ; also ten guineas to the East Lancashire Systematic Benevolent Institution , out of the funds of the Lodge . "

By the W . M . " That the Lodge shall meet six times in the year , viz ., on the first Monday in the months of February , March , April , October , November , and December . " ; . ..... A cushion and bible were presented to the Lodge by Bro . Capt . H . S . Hardy , while two very handsome columns were similarly presented by Brethren who are Officers of the Salford Fusiliers . The tablets on the latter bore the following inscription : —

" Presented to the East Lancashire Centurion Lodge , No . 2322 ,

BY BROS . MAJOR MOSS , SURGEON CAPT . SMITH , CAPT . HALL , and CAPT . HARDY , 3 rd V . R . Lane . Fusiliers . 7 th December 1896 . " There were three propositions for initiation , and a ballot for these intending candidates will probably take place upon the next meeting , to be held in February 1897 .

A banquet followed these proceedings , provided by the management of the Hotel in that sumptuous manner for which Messrs . Spiers and Pond are deservedly noted .
