A MASONIC JUBILEE .

AN ANNIVERSARYof probably unique significance was celebrated in Bristol , on Thursday , the 18 th inst . On 18 th May 1843 a candidate was initiated in the Moira Lodge of Honour , No . 326 , who has been a member of it daring tbe whole of the fifty years whioh have Bince elapsed , and bavins ; attaiued to the highest position in tho Lodge , has filM many distinguished positions and is now

Provincial Grand Master of Bristol . Bro . W . A . F . Powell is universally respected throughout the Province , and he will be warmly congratulated by tbe Craft generally upon tbe attainment of his Masonio Jubilee ; indeed his fellow citizens generally can sympathise with the rejoicings of his brethren on the ocoasion . It

was contrary to his wish that any great demonstration should be made in connection with the event , bnt he consented to attend a special meeting of his mother Lodge on Thursday afternoon , the 18 th inst ., at the Freemasons' Hall , Park Street , Bristol , when additional interest was given to the occasion by the presence of Bro . Hugh Owen , who 53 years ago became a member of the Lodge , and who at

85 years of age journeyed from London to do honour to his old friend and assooiate . The W . M . ( Bro . M . expressed the pleasure they all felt at seeing their Provinoial Grand Master with them on that auspicious occasion . In a few well-chosen words he presented the following address on behalf of the Lodge .

" To the Right Worshipfnl Brother William Augustus Frederick Powell , Provincial Grand Master of Bristol , Past Grand Deacon of England . The Worshipful Master , Past Masters , and Brethren of the Moira Lodge of Honour , No . 326 , desire , on the completion

of the 50 th year of your membership of the Lodge in which you were initiated , 18 th May 1843 , installed W . M . 2 nd Dec . 1846 , to express their deep sense of the value of the services you have rendered to Masonry , and on their appreciation of the honour which you have conferred upou your Mother Lodge daring your membership .

They also desire to express their sincere hopo that it may please tho G . A . O . T . U . to permit you to enjoy a long continuance in your exalted office . Dated this 18 th day of May 1893 .

Following these signatures were a list of the present members of tho Lodgo in order of seniority . The address had been very beautifully illuminated on vellum by Bro . W . Bennet , of Broad Street . It was bound in blue morocco , ornamented with gold , and lined with very rich shot silk . Each page was surrounded with emblematic

borders , and the back of each leaf was adorned with Masonic emblems , such as the badge of a P . G . M . and tho like . The frontispiece was a platinotype portrait , by Bro . Protheroe , of Bro . Powell , with his arms and the city arms . The presentation having been made , Bro . Hugh Owen , as the

father of Masonry in Bristol , congratulated tho Provincial Grand Master , not only upon the position in which the Prince had worthily placed him , bnt also upon attaining his jubilee . In a very gracoful speech he said they were young together , bat as he was a few years the elder he entered Masonry first ; in fact he had been fiffcy-three

years a Mason . He well remembered the meeting at which their Provincial Grand Master was a candidate , introduced by his honoured father , than whom a more worthy brother never entered a Masonic Lodge . His son had held the highest offices in the Province and had won the confidence of the highest , the noblest , the humblest and the simplest of his brethren .

Bro . John Northam , the newly-installed W . M . of 2257 , conveyed the congratulations of the Lodge , which was permitted to bear the honoured name of Powell . Brother W . G . Vowles P . P . G . J . W ., as a Bristol man of thirty-five years' standing added his felicitations . The Provincial Grand Master , who was received with enthusiastic uppluuse , roso to reply , aud said he could not adequately oxpresa his

thanks for tbe honour dono him by his mother Lodge . So long as he lived the beautiful address they had presented to him would be among his most precious Masonic treasures . Bro . Owen had referred to fifty years ago , and very few could expect to see the fiftieth anniversary of their initiation . But to be a subscribing member to a Lodge for fifty years , to have become its Worshipful Master , to have

held various offices and at the end of the time to be Grand Master of the Province was , he believed , absolutely unique . He could say he had never sought any office , but he could only claim one merit for himself , a good feeling for the Craft , a desire to uphold it , to maintain its oharacter and to do all in bis power to help a brother Mason . He was uuable now to be as active as he bad beeu ia years

gone by . In fact had he known the illnesses he should have to undergo he would not have accepted his present position . In conclusion be wished the Worshipful Master and brethren of every Lodge in the Province that prosperity , goodwill , and harmony whioh Masons ought to possess and had done in a peculiar degree in the Province of Bristol during the whole time ho had known it . The proceedings were shortly afterwards brought to a close .

Cox P . M . 1563 , which took place on Friday , the 12 th inst ., after au illnes 3 of four months duration . The funeral took place on Tuesday , a service having been previously held at St . Thomas Church , Orchard Street , W .,

where we noticed the following amongst others : —Brothers Beach ( brother-in-law ) mourner , Dairey , Martell , Artow , Woodrough , Bellerby , Walter Dennis , Higgins , Brander , Amelot , W . H . Bolt W . M . 1563 , and J . E . Shand . The

cortege was afterwards driven to Hanwell Cemetery , where the remains of our deceased brother were interred . Many wreaths decorated the coffin . We beg to offer Bro . Cox ' s widow and friends our fraternal sympathy .
