RESIGNATION OF THE DEPUTY G . M .
IT has been freely announced during the week that the Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe has resigned the position of Deputy Grand Master of England , and that the Grand Master has
appointed Earl Amherst Provincial Grand Master of Kent to the vacant post , but up to the time of writing we have had no official notification of the change .
Similarly , the announcement as to Viscount Ebrmgton s retirement from the office of Provincial Grand Master of Devonshire , which was recorded in our last issue , and previously in many of the daily papers of the Kingdom , is hardly yet " known "
in official circles , although Viscount Ebrmgton , replying to the toast of his health at the meeting of the Barnstaple Lodge on Monday of last week , himself stated the facts of the case , remarking that he could not find sufficient time to perform the
duties connected with such a large Province as Devon , numbering between 50 and 60 Lodges . Although he did not mind the responsibility , he did not wish to keep office if he could not
properly carry out the duties ; he had , therefore , placed his resignation in the hands of H . E . H . the Grand Master , and the same had been accepted .
We never could understand the need for such reticence , as is here referred to , on the part of those in authority , and regard attempts at secresy under such conditions as not only wholly out of place , but very likely to create a feeling of
distrust on the part of those who are left in the dark as to what is actually taking place . Such an appointment as that of Deputy Grand Master of England is one that carries with it the sympathy and the interest of the whole English Graft ,
and to say that there is any need for delaying the official announcement of a change that—assuming it to have taken place—was known to us nearly a week since , appears to us to be wholly inconsistent .
Of course our remarks in this connection are , in a manner of speaking , mere conjecture , but we think there is truth in the rumours that have reached us , and we accordingly take the earliest opportunity of tendering our congratulations to
Earl Amherst , on what we venture to predict will be the most popular appointment of the day in Freemasonry , one that many regarded as certain when last the Deputy Grand Mastership was open , and which caused no little disappointment when it was found another had been selected for the honour .
Eeferring to the resignation of Viscount Ebrington as Prov . Grand Master of Devon , the " Devon and Exeter Gazette " says every Mason in the Province knows that , to a man who really carries out the duties of Provincial Grand Master with any degree of regularity , the tax is very great , and no surprise ought
to be occasioned at his lordship now wishing to retire from the post . Of course it is an honourable as well as an onerous one , and his lordship has maintained the former character of the office by never shrinking from its duties . He is a member of the Barnstaple Lodge , No . 251 , - in which he was initiated in 1877 ,
continuing a ' member ever since . Two years later , namely , in August 1879 , he was installed , at the Victoria Hall , Exeter , as Prov . Grand Master , by Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., P . G . M . of Hampshire . His lordship succeeded the late Bro . the Eev . John Huyshe Past Grand Chaplain of England .

THE annual meeting was held in Freemasons Hall , Edinburgh , on the 19 th . Companion Black Grand Superintendent of Stirlingshire was called to the chair , and the Earl of Haddington was elected First Grand Principal ; Major F . W . Allan , Glasgow , Depute Grand Principal ; C . C . Nisbet , Edinburgh , Second Grand Principal ; J . MacNaught Campbell , Glasgow , Third Grand Principal ; E . S . Brown Grand Scribe .
The Companions afterwards celebrated the Festival of the Vernal Equinox , Major Allan in the chair . After dinner Comp . James Simpson , Edinburgh , proposed
the Grand Lodge of Scotland , and the Chairman , in replying as Junior Grand Warden , spoke in high terms of the work of the Grand Lodge and the estimation in which it was held abroad , as he had experienced at Gibraltar and other places .
" Class Lodges " are just now so much the rage in English Freemasonry as to attract notice from the daily press . They really appear to be greatly on the increase , the various professions , trades and corporations seeming anxious to have Lodges the membership of which are to be restricted to their
respective bodies . Following quickly upon the establishment of the Eadnor ( professional ) , Hugh Owen ( Poor Law Officers ) , and the London County Council Lodge , with Bro . Lord Onslow as W . M ., we are informed that members of the London School Board , with the Provincial Grand Master of Middlesex ( Lord
George Hamilton ) at their head , have applied for a Warrant of Constitution . The Guards' Brigade Lodge is being formed by General Lord Methuen and other Officers , and it is quite within the bounds of probability that the City Corporation Lodge will be heard of before long .
An extraordinary case of committal for contempt of court is reported in a Chicago paper , says the " Morning . " Mr . W . H . Freeman appeared in the interest of a client in the Superior Court of Anderson , Indiana , before Judge Devin , who is a Freemason . Freeman , who also belongs to the Craft , wore a
" Masonic pin "—whatever that may be—and as the case proceeded he gave the " Masonic sign of distress . " This was quickly recognised by the Judge , and by some Masons on the jury . The Judge forthwith sent Freeman to gaol for contempt
of court . The advocate , who denies having made any signs at all , threatens to appeal to the Grand Lodge for vindication . Meanwhile , another judge , Seymour D . Thomson , has made a statement to the effect that he has been frequently approached while on the bench by persons giving Masonic signs .
Among the London candidates for the next election of the Girls School is one—No . 25 , Winifred Kate Watkins—whose age will be a bar to her future application , should she be unsuccessful next month . We therefore make an appeal to such of our readers as may have a vote or two unpledged to forward same
on her behalf to the mother , Mrs . C . J . Watkins , 79 Chelverton Eoad , Putney , S . W ., or to Bro . A . T . West , 18 Eodney Terrace , Putney . The case is well vouched for , and being a last application , and at the same time new to the list , is particularly urgent .
We understand Bro . J . C . Malcolm , Coroner for Leeds , is the successor of Bro . Henry Smith , who , it will be remembered , recently resigned the appointment of Deputy
Provincial Grand Master of West Yorkshire .
