Wyndham ' s Theatre . —Paradoxical as it may appear , we are of opinion that those who have not had the disadvantage of seeing M . Rostand ' s famous play of "Cyrano de Bergerac" in its original language will the better appreciate the adaptation by Messrs . Stuart Ogilvie and Louis N . Parker , which Mr . Charles Wyndham is now presenting at his handsome theatre . The difficulties of transposing the French classic verse into English prose are immense , and Messrs . Ogilvie and Parker may be congratulated upon

presenting a very interesting and welcome version of this fine romance . The story cannot be considered novel , though its application is decidedly new , but in this instance self-sacrifice is carried to a remarkable extent . Cyrano being deeply in love with Roxane finds that she is enamoured of Christian de Neuvillette , and thereupon not only abandons his suit , but writes love letters , and in one scene actually makes love to his sweetheart on behalf of his rival . Christian is killed in the wars , and fifteen years after , when Cyrano is dying ,

Roxane learns the truth , and the unhappy Gascon dies in his sweetheart s arms . As a scene of Paris life in the middle of the seventeenth century the play is admirable , and the beautiful pictures presented should be an attraction to playgoers for a long time to coma . Cyrano is both a Gascon and a poet , but Mr . Wyndham pourtrays rather the poet than the braggart . He is therefore seen to much greater advantage in the last three acts ; still he is always debonair and picturesque , and his performance adds yet another

character to his interesting gallery of theatrical heroes . Of the seventy or more other characters on the programme the most striking is the De Guiche of Mr . Jerrold Robertshaw , who represents this unpleasant personage with considerable ability . Mr . Alfred Kendrick has few opportunities as Christian , but makes the most of them , especially in the fourth act , where he discovers Cyrano ' s love for Roxane . Mr . George Giddens gives a clever little sketch as

the poetical pastrycook , and Miss Mary Moore looks charming enough for the part of Roxane . Messrs . Joseph Weaver , Frank Atherly , Windham Guise and Miss Emily Miller sustain some of the lesser characters with distinction ; while the others assist materially in filling in the pictures with life and colour . Although we are unable to bestow the same praise upon the play that it has received in France , we can assure our readers that it is a piece wall worth seeing , and Mr . Wyndham ' s Cyrano is certain to be enjoyed .

Palace Theatre . —The important part which the biograph plays in the Variety Theatre of to-day was well illustrated at the Palace Theatre last week , when , amid many signs of approbation , three excellent pictures illustrative of the relief of Ladysmith were exhibited for the first time . The opening scene showed the Gordon Highlanders marching out of the besieged town to welcome the relieving force . Then there came the entry of Sir Redvers Buller and his staff , and their passage through the principal street ;

and , finally , the Naval Brigade relief column was seen marching into camp after taking part in General Buller ' s triumphal procession . Needless to say , these animated photographs , conveying in great perfection the minutest details of historical scenes , were welcomed with applause which was reminiscent of the enthusiasm of Ladysmith Day . They were the subjects , meanwhile , of the closest scrutiny by an audience which was evidently

resolved to miss no single point in this graphic presentation of the realities of warfare . Pictures depicting the arrival at Southampton of Sir George White , the gallant defenderof Ladysmith , proved the subjectof corresponding interest , while a series illustrative of Her Majesty ' s visit to Ireland provoked unrestrained gratification . Fortunately , while the Queen has been staying in the Emerald Isle the weather has been bright and sunny on the great majority of days , so that the pleasant scenes enacted on Children ' s Day , for

character to his interesting gallery of theatrical heroes .
