Masonic C.C. V. Wood Green C.C. Second Eleven.
MASONIC C . C . v . WOOD GREEN C . C . SECOND ELEVEN .
PLAYED in lovely weather , on Saturday , 21 st May , on a fairly good wicket , and after an extremely well contested game resulted in a victory for the Masonics by 3 wickets and three runs . The M . C . C . having won the toss , put their opponents in , who sent in Lewis and Thomas . The wickets fell very rapidly , owing to the capital howling of E . V . Gardner and P . James . With the exception
of Conolly and Bidwell , who made 16 and 7 respectively , no heavy scoring was shown by Wood Green . The last wicket fell for 44 . After the usual interval , the M . C . C . went in . The first 2 wickets fell for 12 . E . V . Gardner , after a very steady innings , was unfortunately bowled for 8 . The rest followed in and out rapidly , and the
innings ended for 23 . Wood Green in their second innings were easily disposed of , E . V . Gardner and P . James only succeeding in adding 15 to the total . This left the M . C . C . 37 in order to win—a task they
completed , thanks to tbe fine batting of W . A . Stansfield , who made 27 ( not out ) . The Masonic Band played , at intervals , a choice selection of music , which highly pleased the spectators , and made the game very pleasant . The following is the full score : —

Annual Supper Of The Burdett Coutts Lodge Of Instruction, No. 1278.
ANNUAL SUPPER OF THE BURDETT COUTTS LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 1278 .
THE anniversary meeting of this Lodgo was celebrated on the 4 th inst ., at tlie Lamb Tavern , Wilmot-street , Bethnal-greenroad , where it is now comfortably established , and gives every promise of again becoming a most successful working Lodsie . Tho W . M . of the parent Lodge , Bro . Dr . Defriez , having kiudl y consented to preside , Lodge was opened in due form in a room
adjoining the usnal Lodgo room , and tho W . M . was assisted by tho following brethren : —Bros . T . J . Barnes P . M . as S . W ., Clark J . W ., Abrahams S . D .. Ward J . D ., Hammond I . G ., Hand Hon . Secretary . Thero were also present Bros . Huxley , Jones , Smith , Christian , Glass , Brittain , Frichtonicht , Swan , Stewart , Anderson , Quay , Gray , Chitson , Venner , Fisher , E . Vernier , Clements , Holdom , G . H
Stephens , & o . After tho minutes of the previous Lodge meeting had been read and confirmed , Lodge was advanced , and Bro . Barnes S . W . worked tho first section of the lecture with the assistance of tho brethren . Lodge was closed to tho first degree , when the fol . lowing brethren wero admitted members , viz ., Bros . Glass 453 , E . Venner 901 , and Frichtenicht 217 , each of whom expressed thanks
for the honour conferred upon him . Lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the usual Lodge room , which , under the skilful direction of Bro . J . B . D'Ardenne , had undergone a complete transformation , and been made to serve as a spacious and handsome salle i \ manger , the tables being ornamented with flowers , in excellent taste . When oomfnrtnblv seated , to the number of about three
dozen , grace was snid , and an excellent repast was done justice to . It has seldom fallen to onr lot to havo boon present at so successful and harmonious a meeting , all present enjoying themselves most heartily . That excellent aid to tho digestive organs , a good toast list , was next discussed . Bro . Defriez having given Loyalty to the Throne and Prosperity to tho Masonic Institutions , and the Best
Interests of the Craft , the sentiment was heartily received , and Bro . Sturtevant ( S . W . of the mother Lodge , who acted throughout tho evening as I . P . M . ) sang " God save the Queen , " the brethren assisting . The next toast , tho W . M . said , was the toast of the evening . In proposing prosperity to the Burdett Coutts Lodge of Instruction , he felt quite certain , if tho brethren would attend , they
would find out its great value . It was years since he joined , and he felt greatly indebted to the Burdett Coutts Lodge of Instruction . He wonld associate the name of Bro . Barnes , who was well known , with this toast , from whom the W . Master owned to have received considerable instruction . Bro . Barnes , in response , said he was one of the founders of the Lodge , and for a long time took
great interest in it , bping a frequent attendant at its meetings . He wished it all prosperity and success . Although of late not able to be with them often , he was with them in the spirit if not in tbo flesh . He thanked the W . M . for coupling his name with the tonst The health of the W . M . was proposed by Bro . Sturtevant . Bro . Defriez was , he said , tho W . M . of the Bnrdett Coutts Lodge , and it
was very kind of him to come and assist them by taking the chair on this occasion . They all wished to make the Lodge of Instruction a success , and although it had sometimes fallen into disuse , it now was going on most prosperously . It was conveniently located , so that brethren could reach it by rail , and they were fortunate in having a good host ( Bro . D'Ardenne ) . He would ask them to drink
the health of the W . M ., whose assistance had rendered the present meeting a success . After a song from Bro . Hammond , Bro . Defriez said he was very much obliged to Bro . Sturtevant and to the brethren for proposing and responding to the toast . He felt very much indebted to the Bnrdett Coutts Lodge for instruction which had enabled him to fill the chair in the mother Lodge . In proposing
the Officers , the W . M ., after accounting for the unavoidable absence of Bro . W . Hogg P . M . the Preceptor , said no Lodge conld succeed unless it had a good Preceptor . The brethren in coming for instruction had to pay ; this necessitated having a Treasurer to take care of the money , and a Secretary to keep the accounts . He asked them to drink the health of those excellent Officers . After a capital song
from Bro . A . Abrahams , Bros . Hand Secretary , and D'Ardenne Treasurer , returned thanks . The Mother Lodge was next honoured , and Bro . Sturtevant , who was called npon to respond , after a few remarks , said the mother Lodge took its title from a lady whose name is closely associated with charity , and what , he would ask , was Masonry but charity ? The meeting gave him great pleasure , and
he could say , might the Lodge continue its present prosperity , in which wish he was sure every member of the mother Lodge would join . The next toast the W . M . said was a most important one . He asked them to drink to the Sister Lodges of Instruction in the neighbourhood . They had received assistance from all , and felt much obliged to them , especially on the occasion of working the
Fifteen Sections . There was Bro . Barnes , who was a host in himself ; Bro . B . Stewart Secretary of the Tredegar 1623 , G . H . Stephens Secretary of the Israel No . 205 , Christian of the Dalhousie 860 , and others . This was received with great cordiality , and several of the brethren responded . The toasts of the Masonic Press , replied to by Bro . G . H . Stephens ; the Visitors , replied to by Bros . Fisher S . D . Abbey Lodge 1184 , Gray P . M . Camden Lodge 704 , ancl Limbo of the
Corinthian ; the Hosts , responded to by Bros . Huxley and D'Ardenne , with the alternation of some good singing , and a capital recitation by Bro . Stephens , occupied the remainder of this most pleasant evening . Great praise is due to Bro . Hand Hon . Sec . for so ably organising the meeting , and to Bro . D'Ardenne for so efficiently placing the resources of his establishment at the disposal of the brethren in so handsome and creditable a manner .
Among the Volunteer Officers on whom Her Majesty has conferred the honour of Aide-de-Camp , is the Right Worshipful Bro . Sir W . W . Wynn , Bart ., M . P ., Provincial Grand Master of North Wales and Salop .
