It is worthy of note that Durham , despite the fact that the amount contributed to the local Education Fund was larger last year than in any year since its foundation , voted sums of sixty guineas each to the two central Educational Institutions , at the

recent annual Provincial Grand Lodge , and a further sum of seventy guineas to the Benevolent Institution . While such wide liberality continues we need have little fear of local funds superceding the parent ones established in the interests of the whole English Craft .

ooo In the course of their cruise the Brethren of the Channel Fleet were entertained by the Masons of Scarborough , who organised two smoking concerts for their enjoyment , and in

other ways contrived to give the visitors a hearty and brotherly reception , which was subsequently acknowledged through the columns of the " Scarborough Post " by " A Brother , " who wrote on behalf of the Brethren of the Fleet .

The annual meeting of the Chough Lodge , No . 2264 , was held on Timrsday , at the Cannon Street Hotel , Bro . William Close Smith being installed . We hope to give a report of the proceedings in our next issue .

ooo Tbe weekly meetings of the Evening Star Lodge of Instruction , No . 1719 , will commence for the season this evening

( Saturday ) , at the Rutland Hotel , Perry Hill , Catford , at 8 o ' clock , when Bro . G . W . Beste Secretary will work the third degree , to be followed by a rehearsal of the ceremony of Installation by the Preceptor , Bro . James Speller .

The members of the Royal Savoy Mark Lodge of Instruction will hold the first meeting at their new quarters , the Cock Tavern , Highbury Station , next week , when members of the Mark Degree are invited to take part in the proceedings , which will be under the direction of a qualified Preceptor .

The enterpuse of Bro . Bennett in providing suitable accommodation for Masonic gatherings at his establishment—the Hadley Hotel , New Barnet—was further rewarded last night , when the regular meeting of the Gladsmuir Lodge , No . 1385 , waa

held there , on removal from its old quarters at the Red Lion , Barnet , which house is passing through some radical changes at the present time . We hope Bro . Bennett will retain the patronage of the Gladsmuir , and also secure the transfer of the other Masonic bodies which have regularly met at Barnet .

ooo During the summer some additions have been made to the Masonic and other accommodation of the Victoria Mansions

Restaurant , Victoria Street , Westminster , which for the past twelve months has been under the proprietorship of Bro . T . Watt , who will formally inaugurate the new quarters at an inyitation dinner on Tuesday next .

REPORTS OF MEETINGS .

"We shall be pleased to receive particulars of Masonic meetings for insertion in our columns , and where desired will endeavour to send a representative to report Lodge or other proceedings .

CRAFT : PROVINCIAL .

SOUTHAMPTON LODGE , No . 394 . THE monthly meetings wero resumed at the Masonic Hall , on Thursday , 19 th inst ., when Bro . R . R . Linthorue W . M . presided over a large attendance of members . A good deal of business was transacted , after which the usual banquet was held , and a pleasant time was spent .

EGERTON LODGE , No . 1030 . THE regular meeting was held at the George Hotel , Heaton Norris , on Monday , 16 th inst ., Bro . George Ben . Goodfellow W . M . There were present : —Bros . Abm . Pemberton P . M . P . P . G . D . C . Treas ., Thos . Knott P . M . Sec , Hyde Marriott S . D ., Jas . W . Abbott P . M . P . P . G . D . C . D . C , E . Broome I . G ., Capt . E G . Lingard P . M ., Walter H . Vaughan P . M . P . P . G . R ., Geo . Lingard Vaughan P . M ., Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 , H . G . Fisher , T . B . Brooks , Charles Crush , Charles Porter , and others .

In the absence of candidates for Initiation and Raising , which ceremonies were duo , the principal business of the evening resolved itself into that of electing Officers for the ensuing year . The work of the reigning W . M . had commended itself so satisfactorily to the Brethren , that being unanimously requested to act again , Bro . Goodfellow consented , and he will accordingly guide the Egerton ship for another period of twelve months .

At the festive board , loyal and Masonic toasts were hdnoured , that of the W . M . being proposed by Bro . W . H . Vaughan P . M ., & o ., who commented upon the fact that an honour had that evening been conferred upon Brother Goodfellow which it had not been the privilege of any other member of the Lodge to enjoy . It was to be hoped that the forthcoming year would be as successful as the one which had nearly ended , and that the Officers and Brethren would respond loyally to the calls which Bro . Goodfellow might make upon their services .

Bro . Goodfellow W . M ., on rising to reply , said he did so with mingled feelings , for his re-election had made it difficult for him to respond . He had had many pleasures during his term of office , and perhaps not a few disappointments in the fact that some of the Brethren had been away when they

might have been present . He had got through his year happily and comfortably , and could congratulate himself upon the fact that several new members had been brought among them to swell their ranks . He had , moreover , been supported by the Past Masters of the Lodge , and his thanks were due to them for the same .

Bro . G . L . Vaughan P . M . proposed the health of the Treasurer , extolling his work in the past , wishing him every success in the future , and hoping he would for many years continue in office . Bro . Pemberton , in reply , said he liked the position of Treasurer , and would always do his best to please . One of his enjoyments of that evening was to know that the W . M . had again been elected unanimously .

ST . OSYTH'S PRIORY LODGE , No . 2063 .

THE Installation meeting was held on Friday , 20 th inst ., at the Now Town Hall , Clacton-on-Soa , a special dispensation for the meeting to be held there having been granted by the Earl of Warwick Provincial Grand Master . There was a large muster of Brethren . Bro . A . Swann was installed as W . M . for the ensuing year by Bro . W . J . Nunn P . M . P . P . G . D . Suffolk , and appointed his Officers for the ensuing

year . Bro . R . Stobbings was re-elected to represent the Lodge on the Essex Provincial Chaiiiy Committee . The Worshipful Master , on behalf of the Lodge , presented Bro . A . R . Chamberlayne ( the out-going Master ) with a handsome Past Master ' s Jewel , which that Brother gracefully acknowledged .

The Brethren afterwards dined together at the Royal Hotel , an elegant dinner being well served by Bro . and Mrs . Bolton .

DOWNSHIRE LODGE , No . 2437 . THE annual meeting was held in the Town Hall , Wokingham , on Monday , 16 th inst ., when Colonel Edmund Molyneux was installed as Worshipful Master for the ensuing year . A good many Brethren were present , amongst them being Bro . J . T . Morland D . P . G . Master-in-charge Berks . P . G . D . England . _ .

The installation banquet afterwards took place at the Rose Hotel , Wokingham , when about twenty-five sat down . The usual Masonic toasts were submitted and honoured , and between the speeches some capital songs , & c . were rendered .

DUKE OF YORK LODGE , No . 2449 . THE first regular meeting of the session was held at the Palatine Hotel , Manchester , on Thursday , the 12 th inst ., the following among others being present - . —Bros . "William Boden P . M ., Clement Jno . Hall J . W ., Gates Rushton Treas ., R . Meggitt Sec , John Kinsey Asst . Sec , T . H . Stott J . D .,

A . G . Bryce I . G ., Wm . T . Schofield P . M . P . P . G . D ., B . Hopkinson P . M ., J . H . Ratcliff P . M ., J . S . Whittle D . C , W . E . Brooks , S . Kew , Jamea Andrews P . M . P . P . S . G . D ., R . H . Whatham , E . Crowther , Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 / FBSEJMSON ' S CHRONICLE ) . Visitors : —Bros . Kenneth M . Stewart I . G . 1140 , Harry Goldman J . D . 323 .

The principal business of the evening was that of passing to the degree of P . O . Bros . W . E . Brooks and Edwin Crowther , the first ceremony being performed by Brother Schofield P . M ., & c , and the second by Brother Boden I . P . M . Bro . Ratcliff P . M . presented and explained the Working Tools in so excellent a manner , that , familiar as we were with his work in another Lodge , he surprised us on this occasion . At the festive board which followed , various toasts were honoured ,
