The Yorston Case.
part of the history ; either to do it himself , or obtain the aid of competent persons to do it . In the same year a prospectus was issued , canvassers were sent out , ancl arrangements were made for the insertion of portraits .
It is an open secret that this fact was known to others beside Bro . Carson then . Bro . Yorston was nominally at the time negotiating with Bro . Jack , but the correspondence eventually closed .
The prospectus of the work now in question , as it appeared in the Liberal Freemason , Boston , is not only a " pions fraud , " but a literary curiosity , utterly unprecedented in the history of Masonic or any other literature .
In the first illuminated title page no allusion is made to Bro . Gould at all , but in the second title page the work is said to be by R . F . Gould , assisted by Bros . W . J . Hughan , A . F . A . Woodford , D . M . Lyon , and Bros . Carson , Drummond , and Parvin .
This title page is nofc only , as we said before , a " pious fraud , " but is positively a pure " Pseudologia , " conveying to the Craft , alike in representation and by implication , we are sorry to add , distinct untruths .
In no sense whatever had Bros . Hughan , Woodford , ancl D . M . Lyon anything in the world to do with it , nor could Bro . Gould be said to be " assisted , " in any sense , by
Bros . Carson , Drummond , and Parvin , except in a sense indeed totally opposed to any previous idea of Masonic verity or personal honour .
After Bro . Gould's letters ifc seems to us thafc Brothers Carson , Drummond and Parvin , as Freemasons , have nothing to do but gracefully apologise and withdraw ;
otherwise they make themselves accessories after the fact , as Bro . Carson is undoubtedly , we regret to say ifc , before . Afc this moment , no doubt , it is very difficult to say what can further be done to heal the breach as between
American and English Masonic writers , and make an " amende honorable" to Bros . Gould and Jack . The plate is , so to say , in the melting pofc , and the old proverb may seem to be good , " the winner takes his bite , the loser
has his bark . This is no doubt too true , but is there nofc after all a far wider question at stake as before the justice , the fairness , the good faith and intellectual culture of our many worthy brethren in America ?
We stop here to-day . We might say much more , and especially as to that very disagreeable question of the " portrait price , " but we forbear . Bro . Yorston says he has no ill feeling against Bro . Gould ; Bro . Gould has none
against him , but he has manfully protested , and we think it right to endorse his protest here , on behalf of our English Masonic Press , against an act of Masonic literary piracy , unknown hitherto , happily , in the annals of Masonic literature .

Bearer , J . S . Cumberland , and F . R . W . Hedges Secretary . After the reading and confirmation of the minutes , a grant of £ 15 was made to apprentice a pupil , and £ 400 was transferred to the Sustentation Account . The Chairman
was authorised to sign cheques for accounts recommended by the Audit Committee . Two candidates were placed on the list , for the election in April 1888 . The Chairman , before the proceedings were concluded , said as brethren
were present who knew about the proposal of the Centenary Committee for enlarging the buildings , and were acquainted with the plans already submitted , he would like to inform them that the original plan had been
sent back to Bro . Hunt , by whom they were assisted and advised , and he had had a meeting with the Committee . They , through Bro . Hunt ' s help , had been able fco get a scheme proposed that he thought was very much better than
that which was first laid before the Craft . He might add that one or two brethren , representing the Provinces , whom fchey had asked to help them on fche Centenary Committee , had expressed fcheir views , and they were perfectly satisfied
with the plans as amended . He thought when the brethren saw the plans , which were now being lithographed- — and would be in their hands in a few days—they would have no objection . He believed the brethren would
approve of them . Bro . C . H . Webb asked whether the newly-proposed plans would increase the cost ? The Chairman said no ; on the contrary , the cost would be reduced rather than increased . The brethren then separated .
