WHAT was probably the largest and mosfc representative gathering of members of the Masonic Craft which has ever taken place in Bradford was held on Wednesday afternoon , at the Technical College , Bradford . The occasion was tho half-yearly meeting of tho Provincial Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire of Ancient , Pico , and

Accepted Masons . It is six years since the Provincial Grand Lodge previously met iu Bradford . Wednesday ' s gathering was held nuder the banner of the Prince of Wales Lodge , 1648 , of which Bro . Walter Binns is the W . M ., but the dnty of arranging for the meeting and

welcoming the Grand Officers and guests was cordially supported by the Officers and members of each of the other six Lodges in the town . The chair afc fche Prov . Grand Lodge was taken by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Henry Smith , in fche absence of Bro . Thomas William

Tew , the Provincial Grand Master , whoie continued illness , now extending over eighteen months , all members of the Craft deeply regret . There was a very large attendance of Grand Officers , Present and Past , whilst , with two or three exceptions , every Lodge in tho Province was also

represented . Among the visitors was Bro . Edward Lefcchworfch , the successor to the late Colonel Shadwell Gierke in the Secretaryship of the Grand Lodge of England .

Masonic salutations were given to the Grand Offiqers , the Grand Secretary , and distinguished visitors . The minutes of the Provincial Grand Lodge , held afc Leeds , on Monday , the 25 th April last , -were accepted and confirmed .

The acting Grand Master delivered an address which he prefaced by expressing fche regret which fche members would all feel at the absence of the Right Wor . Prov . Grand Master , and their sympathy wifch Lim in the serious affliction which had visited him . He grieved to say that

the prospect of Bro . Tew being among thera again still appeared remote . He ( Bro . Smith ) had in his absence endeavoured to the best of his ability to discharge the duties of the Graud chair , and with fche co-opeiation of tho brethren ho would continue fco do so nnfcil some one more

able—though certainly not more -willing—had been appointed to the post , of which he was anxious to be j-blioved . Ho offered a benriy welcome to the Grand Secretary of England ( Bro . Edward L' ; tcliworth ) , and

assured liitn that no effort would be lost to strengthen the friendshi p and good understanding which had so long existed between the Executive of the Grand Lodge and the Province of West Yorkshire . He was sure he would also be expressing tbe sentiments of all present when he said

Prov. Grand Lodge Of West Yorkshire.

fchey entertained a loyal devotion to the Grand Master His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales , Freemasonry had increased so rapidly of lato years , and numbered in its ranks so many good and worthy men , thafc there had been a desire to increass tho number of those upon whom

Masonic honours could be conferred . A proposal to that effect had been before the Grand Lodge , but ; ifc was withdrawn , though he had very little doubt it would again be brought forward . After making somo suggestions with regard to tho financial management of Lodges , Bro . Smith

proceeded to refer to the Masonio Charities . He said the support given to those Charities during tbe past year had been of the most substantial and satisfactory character . The amount obtained in support of the various Institutions for Old People was £ 66 , 000 , for tho Girls' School £ 10 , 000 ,

for the Boys' School £ 12 , 220 . That sum since the making up of tho return had been increased to £ 92 , 000 . In that handsome amount West Yorkshire

had given £ 4 , 220 , namely , £ 3 , 858 to the Old People ' s fund , £ 210 to the Girls ' , and £ 157 to the Boys ' . After referring to Bro . Matfchewman ' s book of the " Masonic Addresses of Bro . Thomas William Tew R . W .

Provincial Grand Master , " of which , he said , only a few copies yet remained unsold , Bro . Smith acknowledged fche cordial way in which the Provincial Grand Lodge had been invited to Bradford , and the complete arrangements made for the reception of the brethren . There was , he said

a vigorous Masonic life in Bradford . There were now no fewer than seven Lodges in the town , with a membership of 842 , of whom ninety-seven had passed the chair . He

thought he might say they were justly proud of their past history , and ho believed they were determined to maintain fche high character of Masonry in the district , and to tread in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors .

Bro . T . Bateman Fox P . M . 208 , chairman of the Charity Committee , presented bis half-yearly reporfc , and moved its adoption . He said thafc afc tbe election of candidates for Masonic bounties in May last fchey brought forward five candidates , four males and one widow , and they succeeded

m carrying all the five . This was something to be proud of , and he was also exceedingly glad to say that at the present time they had no candidate for any of the Masonic

Institutions so far as that Province was concerned . Tho Charity Committee were graceful for tho confidence which the members afc all times placed in them . He could assure them that the benefits of the institutions were used in

accordance with the wishes of the subscrib- 'ivs , and that no case which came before fche executive was neglected . Ho thanked the brethren In West Yorkshire for the very handsome way in which they had responded to the claims of the Charities , and for tbe promptitude wifch which they had returned the voting papers .

Bro . W . C . Lnpton , Vice-Chairman of the Committee , seconded the adoption of the report , which was carried , Bro . Edward Letchworth and other distinguished visitors acknowledged the salutations of tho brethren in a few appropriate remarks .

It was decided to make a grant , not exceeding ten guineas , for the purchase of a safe for the preservation of Masonic MSS ., medals , and curios .

No petitions for relief were brought before the meeting . An invitation from the Wakefield Lodges was extended for the holding of the next half-yearly meeting of fche Provincial Grand Lodge in thafc city , in April 1893 . After the completion of the business of the Lodge , the brethren dined together at the Alexandra Hotel .
