CELEBRATION OF BRO . GEORGE M . KEMP'S MEMORY .

THE Edinburgh St . Andrew ' s Lodge , No . 48 , on the 14 th instant , celebrated the anniversary of tbo initiation of Bro . George M . Kemp , tbe architect of the Scott Monument . Bro . Woodeson R . W . M . presided over the meeting , whioh took place in the Lodge room of the Freemasons' Hall . In proposing " The Memory of Brother Kemp , " the Rev . J . R . Sabiston said thafc Kemp waa initiated on

5 th October 1827 . They had in the room a very precious relic from his hand . Tbe chair in whioh the Right Worshipful Master sat was the work of George Kemp . It was richly engraved with emblems of their Craft , and St . Andrew's Lodge cherished it as amongst its first and dearest possessions . The principles of Masonry were the highest

under which man could live . They were , indeed , the very principles of Christianity , and Kemp lived up to them , being an honour to the Masonic Craft . His life was an example and an inspiration to all of them . He taught them in the first placo enthusiastic devotion to duty , and in the second place his life told them to work and labour ,

to rieo above their outward circumstances , to grapple with their evil star , and , in the end , to grasp success . It was u great satisfaction to them to have amongst them that night one closely related to

him , Brother Thomas Bonnar , Kemp ' s nephew , who had so eloquently and gracefully written the life of his distinguished unci ? . Brother L . J . Nicholson ( Bard of Thule ) , poet of tbe Lodge , recited the following verses which he had composed for tho

: — Some sing the praises of princes , and of kings , When they can boast the worth of common clay j I sing a nobler song , as he who sings Of one whose name can never pass away .

He walked the rugged path of peasant life , Not gold bat art he sought to make his own ; With all the world against him in the strife , He fought the fight triumphant , and alone .

The mind and eye of genius rov'd afar , And when , at last , the thought had fully grown , Then grandly rose to light of sun and star 'His dream of poesy , enshrined in stone .

In peerless beauty , fair Edina stands , A vision of enchantment evermore ; He placed npon her head , with his own hands , A fairer crown than ever monarch wore . A grateful tribute to Sir Walter

Scott—Aud shall the name and fame of Kemp grow dim f Till art and poesy be all forgot , This priceles monument will speak for him .

Alarm at the door ' . Enquire the causa : A well-known brother from the silent land j We welcome him by love ' s unwritten laws , And in the spirit grasp our brother ' s hand .

His mother Lodgo will honour him to-night ; And long as heart can warm and mind can think , We love the man , admire the genius bright—And now fche memory of Kemp we drink . —Shetland Times
