The Whole Duty Of Masonry.

contend in the words of one of fche most able living exponents of the tenets of Masonry , " thafc fche Brotherly love inculcated by Masonry is no such mere abstraction , nor is its character left to any general and careless understanding of a Mason who may feel disposed to give much

or little to his Brethren , according to the peculiar constitution of his own generous or selfish disposition . Ifc is closely defined , the mode and manner and extent of its practice detailed in words and illustrated in symbolism , so thafc there can be no excuse for error nor apology for

indifference . " Ifc is but necessary to mention the five points of fellowship , once and for ever to stamp out the idea that a Mason can ever , afc any time , or in any place , or in any way wilfully injure a Brother Mason , and afc the same time maintain unsullied his own honour and reputation , or remain true either to the spirit or the letter of his obligation . — " Toronto Freemason . The Masonic Press.

THE MASONIC PRESS .

THE Masonic press cannot rely upon fche means of gain and sustenance that the popular press does . The importance of fche Masonic press as an institution , can scarcely be over estimated . Ifc occupies a higher and more tranquil field of journalism than thafc of the

secular press . Its influence , however , must not be forgotten in the estimate of the social forces . Unobtrusive in its utterances , when compared with the clamorous

voices of the political newspaper , its tones , nevertheless , fall upon calmer hearts , and sink deeper into the convictions and life of society .

As a medium for communication of moral and Masonic intelligence—an educator , refining and elevating —a fire-side mentor , quickening fche intellect , expanding

the heart , and bearing treasures to minds , the Masonic journal wields an influence which cannot well be dispensed with , and one that no other moral force can well supply . The duty of the Mason is therefore plain . He has a

duty to perform in extending the circulation and in widening the influence of the Masonic press . He should nofc excuse himself from this duty . If he is a Master or Officer of fche Lodge , he may recommend ifc to the

members . If he is not an Officer , he can urge its claims whenever an opportunity occurs . The fraternity should awaken fco the importance of a more general and decided effort in behalf of the Masonic newspaper and Masonic literature . — " New York Times . "

MASONRY AND CASTE IN INDIA .

FREEMASONRY in Kurrachee , says the " Smd Gazette , " seems , from all that we learn , to be exercising an influence favourable in every way to universal combination , and helping to bring together all

castes and creeds . It is one of those influences which tends to strengthen and cement loyalty towards our Queen Patroness , especially considering that our good and genial Prince reigns at the head of all English

Freemasonry . In Kurrachee we have to hail with much

satisfaction the opening of a new Lodge among the many that already exist in the Province connected with English Freemasonry , whose consecration and opening ceremony took place at the Freemasons' Hall , on Saturday , 17 th insfc . The hall was brilliantly illuminated outside and

inside , resplendent with bunting artistically arranged by two experienced men of the Royal Fusiliers , the flags being kindly lent by our worthy Brother H . J . Rustomjee Khan . Bahadur Byramjee J . Rajkofcwalla , in whose name the new Lodge has been started , was responsible

for the whole expenditure , not only connected with the Lodge , but also in respect of the sumptuous banquet which was provided , and of which no fewer than ninety partook . Among the guests were many new Masons , this being the second time that the wives and daughters

of Masons graced the banquet with their presence , the first occasion being at the installation of Bro . Brayson in 1878 . There are few who will not look back with pleasure at the interesting ceremony of the consecration and to the genial kindly nature of the presiding Officer , Bro . T . M . Shields , who specially came from Bombay in

his capacity as Deputy District Grand Master in Charge , to consecrate the new Lodge , and who will carry back with him on his return the fraternal sentiments of regret of all who have come in contact with him as Masons ; but all look forward to meeting him again .

Its Foundation.

ITS FOUNDATION .

THE foundation of Freemasonry is a belief in a Supreme Being , its great light the Holy Bible , and its crowning glory the practice of social and moral virtue . That it is ancient is beyond question—and honourable it must be , as the wise and good who have

trom tne beginning approacned ana learned its mysteries , hallowed its practices , and endorsed its principles in all ages of time , conclusively established . Its tendencies are to assist , elevate , and ennoble mankind , and to make

its votaries honourable , just and charitable . If not bound together by a cement such as this , its pillars would have crumbled and tottered to their base , and the whole superstructure long since have been a magnificent ruin .

Its inherent excellence , however , has bid defiance to the assaults of its enemies and withstood the power of time . While other institutions have fallen beneath the malice of the one and submitted to the obliterating progress of

the other , Freemasonry has survived , and still spreads her glory over the world , and is destined to last while " the earth bears a plant , or the sea rolls a wave . "" Canadian Craftsman . "

Messrs . Cassell and Company are preparing an entirely new issue of " The World of Wit and Humour , " which will include a wide and varied selection from fche humourous writers of the present day , and will be furnished with new illustrations expressly executed by P . Barnard , G . G . Fraser , G . L . Pott , Tom Browne , Max Cowper , Jack Yeats , C . Glover , Bernard Partridge , and Gordon Browne . The first part was to appear on the 20 th inst .
