C 3 L a^^^^^^^a SATURDAY , 29 TH DECEMBER 1894 .
One Hundred Years Old.
ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD .
OF all the numerous events of a social nature that have taken place in the spacious halls of the City buildings none has been more successful in point of numbers or otherwise than the Masonic "At Home , " held on Wednesday night , 7 th Nov ., in connection with
the Centenary celebration of the Ancient St . John ' s Lodge of Kingston , Canada . There was that feeling of good fellowship prevailing that put all present afc once
on fche best of terms with themselves and every one else , and the form which the entertainment took was such as to please alike lovers of song and the devotees of Terpsichore .
One hundred years ago , on the 7 th of August last , said the Worshipful Master in his address , a few members of the fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons met in a small house in the City of Kingston , and established the
Lodge which now bears the title of the Ancient St . John ' s , No . 3 , on the Registry of the Grand Lodge of Canada , in fche Province of Ontario . Only seventy-seven years had then elapsed since the formation of fche Grand
Lodge of England—the parent of the Grand Lodges of the world , —but the power and influence of the institution had made itself felt in every quarter of the
globeparticularly in the Western Hemisphere . The Lodge founded in Kingston received its charter from the Provincial Grand Master William Jarvis who acted under authority from the Grand Lodge of the most
One Hundred Years Old.
Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of England , and was constituted on the 7 th of August 1794 , the meeting taking place at Brother John Darley ' s Freemasons ' Tavern . The century that has elapsed since that time has
wrough many changes and improvements in this city , and not the least remarkable has been the progress of Freemasonry amongst us . It would be impossible to measure
the extent of the beneficial influence of fche Craft amongst the people of this city , but that it has been a potent factor for good , no one acquainted with its principles , its objects and modes of working can deny .
The Ancient St . John ' s has , we are proud to say , always held a distinguished position amongst the Lodges in Canada . It was one of the first to take part in the establishment ; of our independence as regards the Grand Lodge of the Mother Country—a wise measure
producing the best results . Ifc has always maintained a high reputation for efficiency in its internal working , and the care with which its record has been preserved procured for it , in the year 1859 , from the Grand Lodge , the peculiar distinction of being allowed to use gold regalia .
If we look at the list of its officers for the past century , we find in ifc the names of many men of influence and distinction , whilst among its members are found the names of the late Prime Minister of Canada , Sir John A . Macdonald , and many others prominent in the history of the country .
The Ancient St . John ' s has also given many Officers to Grand Lodge . Two members of that Lodge , namely the late Dr . James A . Henderson , Q . C ., and Richard T . Walkem , Q . C ., have lately filled the position of Grand Master , the highest office in the gift of the Craft . Others
have honourably filled the office of Deputy District Grand Master , while not a few on account of their zeal for the Craffc have been singled out for distinction by being elected or appointed to principal or subordinate offices in Grand Lodge .
It is a matter of sincere congratulation to us to celebrate fche hundredth anniversary of the establishment of our Lodge , and to contemplate its successful career , and ifc is our earnest hope that fche next century will witness even a still more rapid and effective development of the Lodge ' s usefulness .
Addressing the Grand Master the W . M . said Having resolved to celebrate our Centenary in a fitting manner , we have asked you , M . W . Sir , as the head of the Order in this Province , to be present with us and to assist in the celebration of to-night , and we need hardly
say that we are delighted to see you amongst us . We trust thafc the greafc Architect of fche Universe will give you health and strength to perform the important duties of the high office to which you have lately been elected , and we congratulate you on the occasion of this , your first visit to Kingston , on the great distinction conferred
upon you . Grand Master White replied as follows : Permit me , Right Worshipful Sir , to congratulate you and the members of Ancient St . John ' s Lodge , upon the very large gathering which has assembled here to-night , to
assist you in celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the founding of your Lodge . It is , however , only one of the many evidences which I find throughout the length and breadth of the Jurisdiction of the high esteem in which our ancient and honourable Fraternity are held
among all classes of the community . Little did the few Masons , who , on the 7 fch August 1794 , met in Brother Darley ' s tavern and founded Ancient St . John ' s Lodge anticipate that one hundred years afterwards this large
assemblage , comprising , as I am told , the wealth , energy and business enterprise and—as I can see for myselfthe youth and beauty of your fair city , would be gathered here to celebrate and commemorate that small beginning .
And , I suppose , few of us here to-night have any idea what will be fche nature and extent of the gathering which will doubtless meet here 100 years hence for the
same purpose . That the progress of Masonry and the progress of your historic city have kept pace with each other , must be gratifying to all lovers of our Royal Craft , but cannot be a subject of wonder to those who know and understand the principles upon which fche Masonic fabric is founded .
