WE regret to have to announce the death of Bro . W . Asquith , of Halifax , who was born on 16 th March 1840 , and died on Monday , loth inst , after a long and most painful illness , borne with the greatest fortitude . He had been connected all his life with the machine tool trade , but for the last fifteen months he had taken no active part in the

management of the successful and well-known business established by him thirty-six years ago , now being carried on at Highroad Well Works , Flalifax . During his career Bro . Asquith built many tools of large dimensions for the British and foreign Governments , and the leading engineering works in this country and America . Bro . Asquith was undoubtedly a man

of shrewd business and mechanical ability , an acknowledged authority in and thorough master of his profession , and a strict disciplinarian , while scrupulously fair . His ideas of conducting his works were on the most advanced present-day lines , and aimed at advancing the accuracy and lessening the

cost of production . Bro . Asquith did not identif y himself with public life , but held , at various times , important offices in a private capacity and in private and social life . He had no particular hobby , beyond being thoroughly wrapped up in his endeavours to make his name take the foremost rank in the

trade , and sparing no effort to accomplish that end . He was one of the founders of the De Warren Lodge , No . 1 304 , and held all the Offices in connection with that Lodge . He was hi ghly and widel y respected , and his trade has undoubtedl y lost one of its most energetic and eminent members

THE death is announced of M . Cercueil , a very eminent member of the French Masonic Lodge . It was M . Cercueil who , at the risk of their lives , led the historic deputation of Freemasons during the Commune from Paris to Versailles ,

for the purpose of bringing about a reconciliation between M . Thiers and the insurgents . The deceased was also the author of several useful works on pauperism and intelligent philanthrophy . — " Birmingham Daily Post . "

New Concord Lodge , No . 813 . INSTALLATION OF BRO . JOHN HOWARD . THE annual festival of this well known and popular Lodge , which was consecrated in 1 S 60 , is one of those Masonic events which is always anticipated with pleasure , and enjoyed with satisfaction , therefore we accepted with alacrity the invite of Brother John Howard , the W . M .-elect , to attend the Installation meeting , which took place on Thursday , 21 st inst ., at the Guildhall Tavern , Gresham Street , E . G .

Reed , F . Mason , J . C . Smellie , and several others .

Amongst the visitors we had the pleasure of seeing Bros . John Mears W . M . 788 , A . Green 193 , J . Marcham S 61 , F . A . Slater J . W . 1 S 04 , G . Walfield W . M . 2184 , F . Baddelin J . The proceedings commenced with praiseworthy punctuality at 5 . 30 , when Bro . W . M . Johnson opened the Lodge in due form , and the minutes of the January and emergency meetings were read and confirmed .

The W . M . said before they proceeded further he had a very pleasant duty to perform , and that was to present Bro . John Marcham with a testimonial , for the many and valuable services he had rendered to the Lodge during the past twenty years . Addressing Bro . Marcham he said he had seen many Masters of the Lodge during that time , and he believed if they were all present that night they

would each echo the sentiments of approval . In the name of the Past Masters , Officers and Brethren of the'New Concord Lodge he had very much pleasure in presenting the testimonial , which was intended as a recognition of services rendered to the Lodge , and he trusted the recipient might be spared for many years to look upon it and think of the numerous friends he had made in connection with the Lodge .

Bro . Marchani , who was visibly affected , said he never expected that . He should never forget th / eir kindness , and most sincerely thanked the W . M . and Brethren for their presentation . ( The testimonial was engrossed on vellum , and was magnificently framed . ) The principal business of the evening was then proceeded with . The W . M . vacated the chair in favour of Bro . The Lodge was opened in the second degree and Bro . John Howard W . M .-elect was presented by Bro . John . Ingram Moar P . M . Director of Ceremonies . The balance sheet , which showed a very satisfactory position of affairs , was adopted . Many letters were read bv the Secretary . The resignation of a Brother was accepted with regret . The Worshi pful Master read a telegram from his son and received the congratulations of the visiting Brethren , after which the Lodge was closed .
