After the cloth had been removed , the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were given and honoured , at tho close of which the Worshipful Master , in proposing the health of tho guest of the evening , said that for many reasons he wished the toast had been placed in better hands ,

as there were many present who had had a greater experience of their guest than ho had , and it was one that required ample justice done to it , moro especially after the splendid reception which has been given to it . Among the brethren there was a most uuanimons fceliug that Brother Caulfeild shonld not leave the country without first asking him to meet them once more before his departure .

Brother Caulfeild had held several offices in tho Lodge prior to his attaining tho responsible one of tho Master of the Lodge , and during the whole of that time be had certainly in every way discharged his duties to the satisfaction of the Lodge . No one could have discharged them with more suavity and kindly demeanour than Brother Canlfeild . Although it would be a matter of great regret to lose the services of

brother Caulfeild , it was still , however , ono worthy of congratulation , seeing that he was leaving the country to fill an excellent and lucrative appointment abroad . He ( the speaker ) trusted that Brother Caulfeild would carry with him many pleasant recollections of his past connection with the Brecknock Lodge , and tho large muster of members on the present occasion was one worthy to be remembered ,

for it shewed the popularity of and the esteem in which Brother Caulfeild was held . He wished him , on behalf of the Lodge , every success aud prosperity , and in time to come a happy return to this country . Brother P . M . Caulfeild on rising to respond was received with prolonged choeriug , and , speaking with emotion , said—It is difficult on the present occasion for mo to thank you as I ought to do for your

great kindness in asking mo to be present to-night . For tho flattering speech in which our Worshipful Master has introduced the toast of my health I feel perfectly unable to express to him my thanks , and to you for the very kind manner indeed with which you have received it . It is not only in connection with the Brecknock Lodge , but I sec around me so many good and kind friends who have in every

way assisted me during the timo I havo been connected with Brecon , that yon will perhaps excuse tho emotion which . I feel on the present occasion . I am really afraid to look around me and see some of the best and kindest friends I evor had in my life , and yon will therefore forgive my very few and short remarks in returning you my very sincere thanks for the way in which you have received me

tonight . I do not feel competent to express myself in the manner I should like to do . I must express , in conclusion , my very great sorrow in parting with you all , and will simply thank you one and all sincerely and deeply for meeting me on this occasion . Smeed , P . Z . 9-16 , P . G . J . Middlesex , occupied the chair in the absence of the Z ., through indisposition . H . D . Williams H ., W . Carter J ., W . Piatt P . Z ., S . E . Driver P . Z ., Long , & c . The Chapter

was opened and the minutes of the former Convocation were read and confirmed . Tho election for Z ., H . and J . resulted in the selection of Companions H . D . Williams for Z ., Carter H ., and Kidman J . Thoy were duly installed into the three chairs by Companion W . Smeed P . Z . 9-16 , who performed his duties in his nsual perfect and impressive manner . The newly-installed M . E . Z . then

invested his officers : — Comps . W . Piatt P . Z . S . E ., Ledger S . N ., Long P . Z . Treas ., Green P . S ., W . Speight Janitor . A vote of thanks was unanimonsly accorded to Comp . W . Smeed for the excellent manner in which he had performed the ceremonies of installation ; the same to be recorded on the minutes . A sum of five guineas was voted for the purpose of presenting the retiring Z . with a P . Z . ' s jewel

for the able manner ho had discharged the duties of the chair during his year of office . The Chapter was then closed , and the company sat down to an excellent banquet , provided by Comp . Lassam , that gave great satisfaction . The M . E . Z ., who genially presided , proposed the usual Loyal and R . A . toasts . Comp . Driver P . Z . proposed the health of the M . E . Z ., who had most worthily been elected to

preside over them . Comp . Williams having suitably replied , tbe toast of the Visitors was next given . The M . E . Z . said how pleased he , with the Companions , wero to receive Visitors . He was indeed gratified at seeing among them a Companion who had so ably installed him and the two principals . Comp . Srneed is thoroughly prolicient in Craft as well as in R . A . Masonry , and it was a pleasure

to listen to him . Personally he thanked him for the services ho had rendered the Chapter . They were also very happy to seo Comp . Miller among them . Thoso Companions having responded , the toasts of the P . Z . ' s , II ., and J . wero given and acknowledged . The Janitor ' s toast concluded a very agreeable meeting . Comps . Smeed , Burt , and Lassam sang some excellent songs during the evening .

Lodgo was opened , and the minutes of last meeting read and

confirmed . Lodge was opened in the second degree , when Bro . Polak answered the questions loading to tho third , and the ceremony of raising was rehearsed . The Lodge was closed to the first degree . Bro . 0 . Lorkiu worked tho first and second sections of the Lectnro , assisted by the brethren . Bro . King , of Lodge 1623 , and Bro . Myers I . P . M . Tho Lod ge opened in due form , and the minutes of tho last meeting were read and confirmed . This boing the fourth Tnesday of the month , the following sections were worked by the following

brethren : —1 st Spencer , 2 nd Watkins , 3 rd Musto , 4 th Barker , 5 th Taylor ; tho Lodge then oprncd in the 2 nd degree , when Bro Rawe worked the 1 st section , Johnson the 2 nd , Moss the 3 rd , Smith the 1 th , and Worsley the 5 th of the lecture . Great praise is duo to Bro . Andrews for tho way in which the questions were put by him , while Bro . Musto as S . W . rendered valuable assistance . The answers were all well made , and Bro . Andrews thanked the brethren for their

help , remarking that the working was done very satisfactorily . The Lodge resumed to the 1 st degree , when Bros . Taylor 55 4 , and Moss 1275 , were elected members . Bro . Andrews will preside at the ensuing week ' s meeting . The Committee will meet on Monday next , at eight o ' clock , to carry out and complete arrangements for the summer banquet , which is to take place on Thursday next , the 4 th of September , at the Crown Iun , Broxbourne .
