Freemasons At Play.

FREEMASONS AT PLAY .

IT is not of frequent occurrence that Lancashire and Cheshire bowlers , especially those of the Fraternity of Freemasons , have an opportunity to enter into friendly rivalry with each other . The crack players on either side have for some time past been more than anxious to bring about a contest , so that the relative claims of tho respective counties might onco and for all be settled . The opportunity , thanks to the efforts of Bro . Beattie , of the redoubtable Lancashire team , was afforded on Thursday , 21 st inst ., when a strong representative list of about forty trundlers of the woods assembled at Kirkby , near Melling , to decide the county superiority .

Bro . John Lee acted as captain for the Cestrians , and Bro . H . E . Hollis for tho Lancastrians . The teams were , as regards prize-winners and scientific scorers generally , about equal , and the contest was looked forward to as a final exhibition of county strength and champion playing . In the result the Cestrians had their own way , as th

After play an elaborate luncheon was provided , and an entertainment followed in which Bros . Lee , Lane , Griffiths , Hollis , Lewis , George Smith , and others took part . It is to be hoped that a return match will shortly be arranged , so that the Lancastrians may have a chance of wiping out their sore defeat , if such a friendly revenge can be reckoned within the bounds of possibility . 160 80 ( 240 ) 230 85 ( 315 ) Majority for Cheshire 75 . — " Birkenhead News . " THE Freemasons of Stockton on Saturday visited Wynyard Park , the beautiful north country seat of the Marquis of Londonderry , by the kind invitation of his lordship . On arrival sides in a cricket match were chosen respectively by Bro . William Smith ( the father of cricket in Stockton , and

one of the originators , many years ago , of similar pleasant re-unions at Wynyard Park ) and Bro . H . E . Gribble . A most enjoyable match resulted in a win for the team captained by the latter . After the match the Brethren assembled in the tent specially erected for their use , and a hearty vote of thanks was enthusiastically accorded his lordship on tbe proposition of Bro . Fred Watson , seconded by Bro . Matthias Robinson , both of whom spoke most highly of the more than kindly manner in which Lord

Londonderry had treated the Freemasons of Stockton over a series of years . A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Bro . Gribble for the excellent arrangements he had made for the comfort of the Brethren , and he returned thanks in suitable terms for himself and for the manner in which the toast of his lordship had been received . The Brethren afterwards visited the garden and conservatories , which were in really magnificent condition , and reflected the highest credit on Bro . Gribble .

A " P . M . " writes to the "Lancet" pointing out to Brother Masons that amongst the candidates for election to the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls is Iris Douglass , the daughter of a deceased member of the profession , and

suggesting to those medical Brethren who have votes or can influence them that they should support her solidly and endeavour to secure her election , as the profession has none too many helps of the kind . We hope our Brother ' s appeal will be heartily responded to .
