Bro . John Donovan , the Initiate , in response to his toast , said he greatly appreciated the honour the Lodge had that day conferred upon him , in having admitted him a member of the Order . He would take care never to disgrace it . In submitting the Immediate Past Master , Bro . Jones bore testimony to the valuable services rendered by Bro . Carpenter , and said the members

of the Lodge felt that the presentation of the ordinary Past Master s jewel was not sufficient to express their appreciation o £ his distinguished services , and so they thought that as he had presided over them during the year of Her Majesty ' s Diamond Jubilee , they would ask his acceptance of the Albert Hall Jewel in commemoration of that event . This he had much pleasure in pinning on his breast , by side of the other , and hoped he would often wear them and remember the esteem of his Brethren .

Bro . Carpenter returned his hearty thanks for this additional mark of regard and their kind appreciation of his services . The Lodge might always oount upon him whenever required . Bros . Webster , of the Coborn Lodge , and Clarkson , of the Royal Albert Lodge , on behalf of the Visitors , expressed their sincere thanks for the kindly reception extended them .

Bro . Leonard Potts , as Installing Master , again stated his satisfaction that his efforts that afternoon ¦ had been rendered * in such a manner as to merit the approbation of tho Lodge . Bros . Raymond and Kirk returned thanks for the Past Masters , and Bro . J . K . Coleman at a late hour acknowledged the compliment paid to the Officers .

BISHOPSGATE LODGE , No . 2396 . THIS Lodge , which was instituted . for the purpose of uniting-, the Freemasons of the Ward of Bishopsgate , has now been established over six years , and during that time many highly distinguished citizens have been , and still are , members of it . The last meeting took place on Monday , at the Great Eastern Hotel , Bishopsgate Street , E . C , when Bro . William Newman

W . M . presided , and was assisted by his Officers : Bros . Woolf Jacobs S . W ., E . H . Mead J . W ., Alfred J . Hollingtori P . G . S . Treasurer , Albert E . Pridmore P . M . Secretary , Gilbert , E . Mead S . D ., Thomas Robinson J . D .,. Charles Jarratt I . G ., also David A . Romaic I . P . M ., J . H . Haskins Organist , Samuel Jacobs P . M . P . P . G . P . Herts , H . J . Tibbatts P . M ., W . C Moore P . M ., W . H Bone , W . J . Davenport , C . D . Tudball , Joseph Howard , Henry G ; . Solomon , and W . Caldwell .

The Visitors included W . Driver , M . A ., P . M . 45 , Benjamin Valentine 185 , Arthur Whitby 45 , Henry Massey P . M . 619 and 1928 , W . Hammond 813 , W . Gimlett P . M . 1695 , Orlton Cooper P . M . 211 , & c . The Lodge was . opened in due form , when the minutes , recording the installation of Bro . Newman and the presentation to the late Secretary . Bro . Milton Smith , upon his retirement , were read and confirmed . Owing to . ithe

absence of Bro . Edward N . Hole , who was to have been raised as a M-M ., there was no regular work before the Lodge . Upon the proposition of Bro . S . Jacobs P . M ., seconded by Bro . Robinson J . D ; , Bro . the Right Rev . Alfred Earle , D . D ., Bishop of Marlborough , Rector of Bishopsgate and Chaplain to the Lord Mayor-elect , was admitted as a joining member of the Lodge . Bro . Earle wrote regretting his absence on account of having to attendBro . H . D . Davies at Westminster , on his presentation .

Bro . A . E . Pridmore moved "That the Lodge desires to express its deep regret at the death of their esteemed Bro . J . D . Simmons , and offers its sincere condolence in the irreparable loss that his family has sustained . Bro . Pridmore said it was his mournful privilege to move this resolution , which he was sure would be in accord with the wishes of every member of

the Lodge . Bro . Simmons , who died last month , was a Bishopsgate man well known to the Ward , and a , churchwarden of iSt ; Botolph's . He was one of the first Initiates of the Lodge , and always took great interest in its affairs . The resolution was seconded by Bro . E . H . Mead , and , needless to say , was carried unanimously .

The Worshipful Master said that upon hearing of Bro . Simmons ' s death he had sent a-wreath in- the name-of the' Lodge , as a last tribute of their regard . Bro . Romain referred to the . sudden decease of Bro . Charles Erederick Hogard P . G . Stand . B ., who was an Honorary Member of the Lodge , having officiated at its consecration , and , suggested that a letter of . condolence he also sent to his family . This was seconded by the W . M ., and carried .

Bro . Newman then proposed the resolution standing m his name " That this Lodge offers hearty congratulations to Bro . Alderman Lieut .-Colonel H . D . Davies , M . P ., upon his election to the high office ; of Lord Mayor of the City of London . " He said that while they were always ready to sympathize with those who needed their sympathy , they were also glad to rejoice with those who had cause for rejoicing . Bro . Davies had attained the proud position of Lord Mayor of London , the highest honour that the ¦

citizens could bestow upon him . He was one of the Founders , and a Past Master of this Lodge , and the members were glad that fortune had placed him on the highest spoke of her wheel . He trusted that Bro . Davies might make it convenient to attend at least one of their meetings during his year of office ; and humorously suggested that he might perhaps invite the Brethren to partake of the hospitality of the Mansion House . Bro . Hollington seconded the proposition , which was also passed , and the Secretary was directed to forward it to Bro . Davies .

The resignation of one Brother was received with regret , and another was proposed as a joining member . A letter was read from the Secretary of the Boys School , requesting the Lodge to furnish a Steward for the Centenary Festival next year , and the W . M . having expressed his willingness to serve , was duly elected . Bro . Romain thereupon gave notice that he would move that the sum of ten guineas be voted from the Lodge funds to head . the Steward ' s list . Bro . Jacobs seconded , and the motion "will be brought up for consideration at the next meeting .

-There being no further business , the closing ^ hymn was sung , and the Lodge adjourned till the following month . An excellent dinner was subsequently served , which was supervised by Bro . Backer , the genial Assistant , Manager . The W . M . submitted . the customary Loyal and Masonic toasts , and referred to the Grand-Master

as not only a speculative , but an operative Mason , for no one in his time had laid more foundation stones with Masonic ceremonial . He ( the W . M . ) was present on the 23 rd , at Stammerham , when the Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone for the new school buildings of Christ's Hospital , which he was proud to acknowledge as his " alma mater . "

In grateful terms Bro . Romain proposed the health of the Worshipful Master , who , in reply , said that he should ever strive to do his duty to the Lodge to the satisfaction of the members . As a Bishopsgate boy he had always received kindness and encouragement from Bishopsgate men , and was glad when he was admitted as a member of the 'Lodge . He also

returned the compliment to Bro . Romain , who was well known to them as a good Mason , and a thorough worker in the Craft . The Officers having been similarly honoured , the Tyler ' s toast brought the proceedings to a pleasant termination . The musical arrangements were under the direction of Dr . J . F . Haskins Prov . G ; Organist Herts P . P . G . Organist Essex , who was assisted by Bros . J . Howard , Gilbert Mead , D . A . Romain I . P . M ., Bone , and G . Jarratt .

LODGE OF HOPE , No . 433 . THE installation meeting took place on Monday , 4 th inst ., at tho Foresters ' Hall , ' Brightlingsea , a dispensation for the purpose having been granted by the Earl of Warwick Prov . Grand Master . The ceremony of installing Bro . James Chaplin as W . M . was performed by the Prov . Grand Secretary Bro . T . J . Railing , in the absence , through a family bereavement , of Bro . Claude E . Egerton-Green W . M . 51 'Prov . S . G . W ., who had promised to do it . The Officers for the year . were , appointed , and invested .

Bro . R . D . Poppleton P . M . P . P . G . D . was re-elected to represent the Lodge onthe Essex Provincial Charity Committee . A vote of thanks haying been passed to the Installing Master , and a resolution of condolence with Bro . Egerton-Green , the Lodge was closed . Between forty and fifty Brethren afterwads dined together at the'Duke of Wellington Inn . This was the first occasion that the installation dinner lms' been held at the Duke , and Bro . Robert Pitt , the host , was heartily congratulated upon the success of his catering .

LODGE OF TRUTH , No . 581 . THE tregular meeting was held at the Gransmoor Hotel , Openshaw , on Wednesday , the 20 th inst ., Bro . William Jones W . M ., there being , an attendance of over thirty members and visitors .

As there was no special Lodge business an early adjournment was made , and the remainder of the evening was -sprr . t harmoniously . Songs , recitations , & c , were given by Bros . Chas . H . Griffiths S . D ., Dr . E . E . Jones J . D ., G . ' H . Barnes P . M ., R . H ; Beard , J . F . Moorhouse , Arthur Mellor , W . M . B .-Boyd 1166 , and others .

PEOVINCIAL .

By the bye , we are pleased to learn that Bro . Boyd , who has carefully prepared a series of lectures upon Masonic subjects , has recenty been entertaining and instructing the members of several Lodges in the vicinity , his efforts having given very great satisfaction .

AFAN LODGE , No . 833 . THE- annual installation meeting was held at the Lodge Room at the Public Hall , Aberavon , on Thursday , 21 st inst ., when Bro . Vaughan John-was re-installed Worshipful Master by Bro . M . Tennant D . P . G . M ., in the-presence of a full assembly .

EGERTON LODGE , No . 1030 . THE annual meeting and Festival of St . John in connection with this Lodge took place at the George Hotel , Heaton Norris , on Monday , the 18 th inst ., the proceedings . commencing at a , very early hour in the afternoon . . After the reading and confirmation of minutes , Mr . George Frederick Muddiman , Manager , Heaton Chapel , was successfully balloted for , and initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Antient Freemasonry by Bro . Walter . H . Vaughan P . M . P . P . G . Reg .

The . Auditors presented their report , and the accounts were passed , after which Bro . Albert Ernest Broome S . W . Worshipful Master-elect was installed into the chair of K . S . by Bro . Geo . Ben . Goodfellow P . M ., assisted by the following Past Masters : Bros . Abm . Pemberton P . P . G . D . C . Treas .,

who presented and explained the Working Tools of the various degrees ; W . H . Vaughan , who gave the address to the W . M . and invested the Officers ; Wm . A . Vaughan , who addressed the Wardens ; and Geo . Lingard Vaughan P . P . G . Reg ., , who addressed the Brethren generally—an array of names quite sufficient to guarantee that the work was well performed in every detail .

The Officers referred to as being invested were Bros . Chas . Porter S . W ., W . A . . Bacon J . W ., W . A . Vaughan P . M . Treasurer , Thos . Knott P . M . Secretary , J . B .. Oldham S . D ., H . Shepherd J . D ., W . C . Sheard I . G . Bro . Pemberton . was again appointed Charity Representative .

A capital banquet followed , Loyal and Masonic toasts being agreeably relieved by songs and instrumental music , in which the services of members and- visitors alike were brought into requisition , a pianoforte and violin solo rendered by Bros . Wm . Goldthorpe P . M . 2156 P . P . G . Reg . and C . Tilsley 1459 respectively , being especially applauded .

. Among other important visitors , we noticed Bros . C . D . Cheetham P . Prov . Gr . W ., Jas . Newton Prov . Gr . Secy ., J . Selby Prov . Gr . D . C , Harry Perry Prov . G . S . D ., W . H . Beastow P . M . 1459 , A . C . H . Smith J . W . 2554 , G . H . Scott S . W . 581 , and Canon John Henn W . M . 2109 .

KING HAROLD LODGE , No . 1327 . THE regular meeting was held at the Four Swans Hotel , Waltham Cross , Herts , on Thursday , 21 st inst . There was a good muster of both Officers and Brethren , and also many visitors , presided over bv Bro . J . Priddle W . M ., supported by Bros . G . S . Metcalfe I . P . M ., Henry ' Park S . W ., W . Bangs J . W ., " W . A . Sproat P . M . Treasurer , Thomas Reilly P . M . Secretary , H . Trask P . M . 2372 S . D ., E . G . Piatt J . D ., J . Robinson P . M . D . C , Lewis Cohen Assist . D . C , D . J . Shepherd Organist , D . J . Witte I . G ., and Young Tyler .

Bro . Frank Paul was raised , and three gentlemen were initiated . The W . M . was complimented upon the excellent way in which he worked . Ten guineas from the Lodge Funds was voted to be placed on the W . M . ' s list as Steward for the next Festival , in February 1898 , of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution .

A handsome testimonial was presented to Bro . Reilly , in recognition of his many years service to the Lodge as Secretary . Bro . Reilly returned thanks in feeling terms . The Lodge was then closed , and the Brethren retired for dinner . The usual toasts wero given , and heartily received . After spending a pleasant evening , with some excellent harmony , the Brethren dispersed .

John in connection with this Lodge took place at the George Hotel , Heaton Norris , on Monday , the 18 th inst ., the proceedings . commencing at a , very early hour in the afternoon . . After the reading and confirmation of minutes , Mr . George Frederick Muddiman , Manager , Heaton Chapel , was successfully balloted for , and initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Antient Freemasonry by Bro . Walter . H . Vaughan P . M . P . P . G . Reg .

The . Auditors presented their report , and the accounts were passed , after which Bro . Albert Ernest Broome S . W . Worshipful Master-elect was installed into the chair of K . S . by Bro . Geo . Ben . Goodfellow P . M ., assisted by the following Past Masters : Bros . Abm . Pemberton P . P . G . D . C . Treas .,

who presented and explained the Working Tools of the various degrees ; W . H . Vaughan , who gave the address to the W . M . and invested the Officers ; Wm . A . Vaughan , who addressed the Wardens ; and Geo . Lingard Vaughan P . P . G . Reg ., , who addressed the Brethren generally—an array of names quite sufficient to guarantee that the work was well performed in every detail .

The Officers referred to as being invested were Bros . Chas . Porter S . W ., W . A . . Bacon J . W ., W . A . Vaughan P . M . Treasurer , Thos . Knott P . M . Secretary , J . B .. Oldham S . D ., H . Shepherd J . D ., W . C . Sheard I . G . Bro . Pemberton . was again appointed Charity Representative .

A capital banquet followed , Loyal and Masonic toasts being agreeably relieved by songs and instrumental music , in which the services of members and- visitors alike were brought into requisition , a pianoforte and violin solo rendered by Bros . Wm . Goldthorpe P . M . 2156 P . P . G . Reg . and C . Tilsley 1459 respectively , being especially applauded .

. Among other important visitors , we noticed Bros . C . D . Cheetham P . Prov . Gr . W ., Jas . Newton Prov . Gr . Secy ., J . Selby Prov . Gr . D . C , Harry Perry Prov . G . S . D ., W . H . Beastow P . M . 1459 , A . C . H . Smith J . W . 2554 , G . H . Scott S . W . 581 , and Canon John Henn W . M . 2109 .

KING HAROLD LODGE , No . 1327 . THE regular meeting was held at the Four Swans Hotel , Waltham Cross , Herts , on Thursday , 21 st inst . There was a good muster of both Officers and Brethren , and also many visitors , presided over bv Bro . J . Priddle W . M ., supported by Bros . G . S . Metcalfe I . P . M ., Henry ' Park S . W ., W . Bangs J . W ., " W . A . Sproat P . M . Treasurer , Thomas Reilly P . M . Secretary , H . Trask P . M . 2372 S . D ., E . G . Piatt J . D ., J . Robinson P . M . D . C , Lewis Cohen Assist . D . C , D . J . Shepherd Organist , D . J . Witte I . G ., and Young Tyler .

Bro . Frank Paul was raised , and three gentlemen were initiated . The W . M . was complimented upon the excellent way in which he worked . Ten guineas from the Lodge Funds was voted to be placed on the W . M . ' s list as Steward for the next Festival , in February 1898 , of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution .

A handsome testimonial was presented to Bro . Reilly , in recognition of his many years service to the Lodge as Secretary . Bro . Reilly returned thanks in feeling terms . The Lodge was then closed , and the Brethren retired for dinner . The usual toasts wero given , and heartily received . After spending a pleasant evening , with some excellent harmony , the Brethren dispersed .
