Lodge was advimced , and Bro . Dr . Cutmore was introduced to Bro . J . W . Miller , who had assumed the

chair , by Bro . P . M . . Newman , for the benefit of installation . Lodge was regularly advanced , and the ceremony completed . At its conclusion the W . Mr . J . G . Appell was introduced and most impressively initiated by the W . M ., who performed the ceremony in a very perfect manner . Before c ' osing the Lodge the W . M . had the gratification of presenting to his predecessor in offico , Bro . S . D . Ewins , a handsomo P . M . ' s jewel , which had been unanimously voted by the Lodge . He considered that the jewel had been well earned , and trusted that Bro . Ewins

might live long to wear it . The inscription on the jewel was as follows : "Presented by tho William Preston Lodge , No . 7 fiG , to Bro . Samuel Daniel Ewins P . M ., in appreciation of his eminent services as W . M ., and as a token of fraternal regard and esteem . 2 Sfh November 1878 . " Bro . G . Newman announced that he had undertaken to represent the Lodge at the approaching Festival of iho Royal Masonic Benevolent

Institution , and on his asking the Lodgo to support that Institution , tho sum of five guineas was immediately voted to head his list . Lodgo was now closed , aud tho brethren adjourned to banquet . At its conclusion , after grace , the W . M . gave the usual toasts . Bro . Ewins in introducing tho toast of the W . M ., referred te Bro . Cutmore in very kind terms . He considered the health of their now W . M . was

the principal toast of tho evening . The members had seen how well Bro . Cutmore had been able to work the ceremony of initiation on this the first night ho had occupied the chair of the Lodgo , and lie ( Pro . twins ) considered his conduct in tho chair thus far augured well for the future prosperity of tho Lodge . The W . M . thanked the brethion for having placed him in his present position . It would bo

Bro . Miller thanked tho brethren . Ho was always most heartily received in the William Preston , and as a consequence felt more at homo there than in any Lodgo it was his g < od fortune to enter . Since the Lodge meetings had been held at their present quarters , the Lodgo had considerably increased . Ho hoped that its prosperity would continue , and that it would always occupy the high position

it at present enjoyed . He was gratified at thinking he had been of service iu installing the present Master . Bio . Newman , by command of tho W . M ., gave the health of the Visitors , tendering thorn a hearty welcome , and trusting it would bo long before it was neces- [ sary to omit tho toast at the meoting of tho William Preston . Past Masters ; replying to which Bro . S . D . Ewins I . P . M . con- ' , sidorcd it a great honour to have the opportunity of responding to so ' important a toast , and then delivered tho lollowiug speech : —I am , desirous of doing my dnty in every state of life iu which the , G . A . O . T . U . has called me . I confess I inn glad to be relieved from the distinguished post I havo just left . The poet talks of " tho fierce

light that beats upon a throne , " but iu my opinion it is nothing to the nervousness I felt on taking the distinguished offico to which you appointed mo . " He tendered his hearty thanks for the handsomo jewel which had been presented him , and hoped he would be able to attend the meetings of the Lodge for many years to come . The health of the Officers was next given and acknowledged . The Tyler was summoned , and the brethren dispersed .

The candidates wero Bros . P . M . Somers , and J . Greenfield . After a ballot , duly taken , Bro . Greenfield was declared elected , by a considerable majority , and was invested by the Acting W . M . with

tho collar of office . Tho names of soveral joining members , including one from a Scotch Lodge , were announced . Petitions for relief were presented , and in two cases refused . rendering of the most impressive of our ceremonies , which that brothor suitably acknowledged , and after tho transaction of some formal business , relating to the formation of the Benevolent Association , and to the erection of a Masonic Temple , which we understand is to be seriously considered at the next regular meeting of the mother

Lodtre , tho proceedings were closed in the usual way , and tho brethren retired , feeling thoroughly satisfied that when , in the course of events , Bro . Kasner fills tho chair of W . M . in Lodge 1 ( 512 he will ably discharge the duties of the post , and in every way keep up the high reputation which that Lodgo has for careful , aocurato , and impressive rendering of the ceromonios .
