ance . He had earned the respect and esteem of the Brethren of the Lodge . The great interest he had taken in all matters pertaining to Freemasonry fully entitled him to the honour conferred upon him , and he trusted that his life might be long spared to enjoy the fruit of his Masonic labours .

The W . M . in most feeling terms tendered his thanks and assured the Brethren that nothing should be wanting on his part not only to uphold the dignity of the chair , but he would strain every nerve to promote the peace and harmony of the Brethren of the Lodge .

Bro . Kennington S . W . proposed the health of the Installing Master Bro . A . Wykes , who suitably responded . The Charities and other Masonic toasts followed . The evening was enlivened by excellent singing . **********

Albert Victor Lodge , No . 1773 . INSTALLATION OF BRO . GILBERT L . HARDCASTLE . THE annual meeting and festival of St . John in connection with the above Lodge took p lace on Saturday , i 6 th inst . Three ceremonies had been announced , viz ., two initiations and a raising , but these were abandoned for the more important one of

installing Bro . Hardcastle S . W . into the chair of K . S . The work was undertaken by Bro . Alex . H . Sellers Worshipful Master , who was assisted by Past Masters T . M . Brown , W . T . Blease , William Lambert , F . Townson , J . Harrop P . P . G . D ., Councillor Thomas Kay , and J . L . Smith .

The new Officers are as follow : Bros . J . Harold Burton S . W ., James Stewart J . W ., Rev . W . C . Edwards-Rees , M . A ., Chaplain , F . Townson P . M . Treasurer , Wm . Mosley P . M . Secretary , W . T . Blease P . M . D . C ., W . Robinson S . D ., J . B . Kenyon J . D ., James Hart I . G ., A . T . Mills Organist , Jos . Harrop P . M . Char . Rep ., G . J . Blore , J . H . Oakley , J . M . Barrett , J . T . Ireland , W . Statham Stewards .

During the festival of St . John , which succeeded . Lodge business , a Past Master's jewel was presented to the I . P . M . It bore the following inscription :

Presented to BRO . A . H . SELLERS by the Brethren of the Albert Victor Lodge , 1773 . Nov . 16 th , 1901 . It was inevitable that a slight cloud should be < cast over the

proceedings , from the fact that many of the Brethren came direct to the meeting from St . Catherine ' s Church , Barton-upon-Irwell , where they had been attending the funeral of Bro . Fred Daniels , one of the Stewards appointed to be invested and addressed that day .

Bro . Daniels was junior partner of the firm of Messrs . J . Daniels and Sons , Builders , Pendleton , and his death was the result of an accident , whilst acting in connection with business matters , and occurred in the previous week . As . proving how true is the sentiment of old Burton that "in the midst of our mirth , jollity , and laughter , there is sorrow , and grief ; of if there be true happiness amongst us , ' tis but for a time , "

we may remark that on Tuesday , the 5 th inst ., and only a few hours previous to the unfortunate occurrence , we , together with Bro . Daniels , were entertaining a meeting in Pendleton , called together by the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows Friendly Society , primarily for the initiation into the Order of W . J . Galloway , Esq ., M . P ., one of the Manchester representatives in Parliament .

Words used under peculiarly melancholy circumstances like this may be considered as mere facons de parler , but we can affirm from personal knowledge of and intimacy with Bro . Daniels that his was an equable temperament which attracted sensible people towards him , and disarmed all adverse criticism ; his position being such that the slanderous tongue , and the baleful tooth of calumny

never touched or attacked him , leaving time for a peaceful and prosperous pursuit of his daily avocation , instead of having to waste it in vindications , as some are compelled to do , who , in the rush and turmoil of public life , and sometimes even in private life , are wantonly and maliciously assailed by those who are jealous of any little deserved success which may have attended well-meant , although perhaps injudicious , or wilfully-misunderstood ettorts .

We sympathise with the family and hope they will be sustained by the G . A . O . T . U . in this their great misfortune .

********** Lodge of Faith , No . 5 81 . THE regular meeting was held at the Bradford Hotel , Mill Street , Openshaw , on Wednesday , 20 th instant , Bro . S . Andrew Worshipful Master .

After the reading and confirmation of minutes Messrs . John Leigh , Agent , and Joseph Whitehead , Manager , were successfully balloted for and initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Ancient Freemasonry . These ceremonies were followed by the raising of Bros . Ernest Pollitt , Robert Goodier , and Thos . G . Parkes to the s-oblimc degree of M . M .

Such a heavy programme necessarily required some assistance , and this was cheerfully rendered by Past Masters Dr . E . Evanson Jones , Chas . A . Griffiths , William Jones P . P . G . S . B ., and Robert Adshead , who materially lightened the labours of Bro . Andrew . The election of Officers took place , with the result that Bro . Matthew Goth S . W . was unanimously chosen as W . M . for the ensuing year ; and his installation will take place on Wednesday 18 th December . J
