-and succeeded in considerably adding to the success and enjoyment of the meeting . The new Worship ful Master was a member of the Queen ' s ' Westminster regiment of volunteers for thirty-three years , for twelve of which he enjoyed the rank of Col .-Sergt . He retired in 18 97 , with permission to retain his rank and wear the uniform . He

. proved himself oar two occasions champion of the South London Rifle Club—about twenty years ago—and also holds the N . R . A . medal and several other honours . He represented the regiment , also the S . L . R . Club and the county for upwards of twenty years . He was initiated in the Queen ' s Westminster Lodge , in 1889 , and enjoys the respect and good wishes of his fellow members . We wish him a successful year as Worshipful Master .

********** Stuart Lodge , No . 1632 . A VERY enjoyable meeting of this flourishing Lodge was held on Monday , at the Frascati Restaurant , Oxford Street , under the presidency of Bro . Charles E . Brooke W . M ., who was supported by Bros . J . O . Connor I . P . M ., E . Falkner S . W ., E . Brooke J . W ., G . H . E . Morgan P . M . Treasurer , Alfred Bannister P . M . Secretary ,

Henry Montgomery S . D ., J . Uglow acting J . D ., Henry Baldwin P . P . G . Standard Bearer Middx D . C ., J . Taylor I . G ., George W . Allen and R . J . A . Bennett Stewards , J . Williams Tyler ; Past Master D . R . Milch , and Bros . C . Hancox , H . Walter , W . G . Stacey , W . Jackson , W . J . Yardley . J . E . Firminger , J . Harp , J . G . Arnold , D . Berry , J . Welch , H . Whetstone , G . H . Prickett , W . H . Baker , John Gray , A . Blaydon , W . Toole , H . Gray , W . Ford , C . Davies , & c .

Among the visitors were Bros . Oliver C . Coombs P . M . 2244 , Joseph T . Whitehead J . W . 1441 , and J . Wynman . The Lodge being formed the minutes were read and confirmed . Bro . J . E . Firminger , who was initiated at the previous meeting , was examined and entrusted . The Lodge was opened in the second degree , and that Brother was passed as a Fellow Craft .

Bros . W . Jackson and W . J . Yardley answered the questions leading to the third degree to the satisfaction of the Worshipful Master , and were entrusted . The Lodge being advanced those Brethren were raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason . We have had the pleasure of seeing the working of the W . M . in the Lodge of Instruction , but on this occasion he excelled himself ; there was no unnecessary hurry , but the working was slowly and effectively rendered .

The Lodge being resumed to the first degree , a notice of motion brought forward by Bro . R J . A . Bennett , to consider the advisability of having a ladies ni ght , was unanimously carried , and it was decided that the banquet and ball should take place on the 27 th of January . A committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements .

Two gentlemen were proposed for initiation , and a few communications read—especially from Messrs . William Bennett Pell and John Howett , who were on the agenda for initiation , but were unavoidably prevented from being present , they hoping to attend at the following meeting . The Lodge was then closed , and the Brethren retired to partake of an excellent repast , for which the famous Masonic home is so highly renowned .

After the usual Loyal toasts Bro . J . O . Connor I . P . M ., in flattering and well deserved complimentary terms gave the toast of the W . M ., calling upon the Brethren to receive the toast with a good Masonic fire . This was done most heartily . The W . M ., on rising to respond , was cordially received . He thanked Bro . Connor I . P . M . for his kind remarks , and the

Brethren for having received the toast in such a hearty manner . He was pleased to see such a good attendance of Brethren , and was delighted that his working had given satisfaction .. He always endeavoured to render the ritual effectively . He was sorry the candidates for initiation were prevented from attending that night , but was pleased there was plenty of work in store for him at the next meeting—the more the merrier . Again he thanked them .

Bro . H . Baldwin Senior Past Master P . P . G . Std . Br ., responding for the Past Masters , said the courte 6 us and Masonic castigation on the Officers of the Lodge was justly merited . A more regular attendance at the Stuart Lodge of Instruction was the only remedy

for this ailment . He urged the Brethren to pull together so as to make the Ladies Night—the fourth Monday in January—a thorough success , as it has been heretofore . The tenets , principles and ritual of Freemasonry , if properly carried out , were magnificent in the extreme .

The toast of the visitors was next given from the chair in most cordial terms . The W . M . said the members of the Stuart Lodge were always delighted to see guests and give them a most hearty welcome . Bro . Oliver C . Coombs P . M . 2244 responded .

Other toasts followed and were regularly acknowledged . The musical arrangements were much appreciated , Brother Edward Jenkins , who is well known amongst the profession , being in good form , whilst Bros . C . Davies , Henry Montgomery , and other Brethren added greatly to the enjoyment of the evening with displays of their musical talent .

The Lodge was opened and the report of the Auditors submitted . This , showed the Lodge to be in a very satisfactory condition , on which , the members are to be congratulated . The Installation ceremony was conducted throughout by the W . M . Bro . H . G . Tayler in a most confident , eloquent , and impressive manner .

The W . M . appointed , and , in a highly creditable manner , invested his Officer ? , as follow : Bros . ' G . Jackson S . W ., A . M . Scarff J . W ., Rev . G . Bell Doughty Chaplain , H . Cooper P . M . Treasurer , H . W . Gompertz P . M . Secretary , H . Lowe P . M . D . C ., J . Gennings S . D ., G . Billings J . D ., J . F . Haskins P . P . G . After the closing of the Lodge the Brethren adjourned to the banqueting hall , where the charming floral decorations which were generously provided by Bro . W . P . Forbes P . M . were much appreciated . Not only were the tables profusely adorned , but banks of foliage surmounted by a magnificent selection of various coloured choice chrysanthemums , were gracefully displayed in well selected positions in the room .

The . W . M ., 'in proposing the usual Loyal toasts , referred to the numerous excellent Masonic qualities of His Majesty the "Protector of the Craft , " and expressed the sincere hope that he might long be spared to rule over a loyal and devoted nation .

H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn when recently installed into the position of Most Worshipful Grand Master performed his work in so satisfactory a manner as to leave no doubt that he would prove a worthy Master , and ably follow in the footsteps of His Majesty the King .

The Pro Grand Master the Earl Amherst , the Deputy Grand Master the Earl of Warwick , and the rest of the Grand Officers were all worthy men , and had done much for the good of Freemasonry . Each toast was enthusiastically received . The I . P . M . Bro . Tayler , in proposing the toast of the evening , that of the W . M ., said that he was confident it would be received

with the greatest cordiality . He had known Bro . Tuck for over seventeen years , and had had the privilege of introducing hima good man—to the Lodge , and had worked with him , he . trusted for the good of Freemasonry , since his initiation to the time of his attaining his present exalted position . It was with every confidence he stated that whatever Bro . Tuck could do for the good of Freemasonry he was sure would be done with all his might .

The W . M ., in response , thanked the I . P . M . for the terms in which he had proposed , and the Brethren for the enthusiasm with which they had received , the toast . He assured them he had in the past carried out his duties with a good heart , and should continue to do so in the future . He considered two great events of his life . / ere those of his initiation , and his installation as W . M ., ' and so far as lay in his power he should maintain the true traditions of Freemasonry , and the reputation of the Lodge .

The toast of the Installing Master and I . P . M . was then proposed by the W . M ., who stated that the Shakesperian quotation on the programme " Now have I done a good day's work" very aptly described the situation . Bro . Tayler had done excellent work in a most laudable manner . They had been most intimate friends for many years , and the Brethren would therefore understand the

extreme pleasure it afforded him to present Bro . Tayler on behalf of the members with a Past Master ' s jewel . He most cordially congratulated him on his perfect work in the Lodge , not only on this occasion when he carried out the duties of Installing Master in so highly satisfactory a manner , but also throughout his year of Office , and he trusted the Lodge would have the benefit of his assistance and advice in the future .

Bro . Tayler I . P . M . m a graceful speech thanked the W . M . and the Brethren for the honour they had conferred upon him . He assured them that the Past Master ' s jewel which they had voted to him , and which had just been presented with such kind words from the W . M ., would be highly treasured by him , and would serve

to remind him of the many happy hours he had spent in the Earl of Zetland Lodge . They had heard a great deal of his voice that evening , and he would therefore say no more except to thank thorn very sincerely for the cordial way in which they had responded to the toast proposed in such feeling terms by the W . M .

The toast of the visitors was then suitably proposed and heartily acknowledged . The W . M ., in proposing the toast of the Past Masters , thanked Bro . Past Master Forbes for the beautiful flowers he had so kindly given to the members on this and former occasions .

Bro . Forbes P . M ., in reply , stated he intended the flowers to show in some measure the great respect he had for the Earl of Zetland Lodge , and he also gave them as a personal tribute to the W . M ' . He hoped the members would take them home as a little memento of a very charming evening .
