had performed his duties wifch suoh enthusiastic zeal and devotion aa to command the respect and admiration of all his colleagues , and in presenting him with a jewel the Lodge was conferring honour npon one cf ita most distinguished members , and certainly where it was thoroughly merited . It was not only advantageous for a brother to have the ability to acquire by assiduous study the ceremonies

appertaining fco fche Craft , but also that he should bo capable of expounding the same with vigour , clearness and intelligence fco those who comprised his audience ; and these qualifications formed some of the distinguishing characteristics of Bro , Jones . He believed that Bro . Jones was destined to take high office in the Craft , and would then also perform hia duties and acquit himself to the entire

satisfaction and earn the approbation of fche brethren with whom he might then be associated . Unquestionably in Bro . Jones the Craft had a worthy representative and a doughty champion . He had done his utmost to make Lodge Waverley pre-eminent BO that by ita work it could without egotism adopt the motto of one of the gallant regiments of Guards , viz ., "Nulli seoundus . " Bro . Jones ' s

intrepidity reminded him of the story of the origination of that motto . He then related the incident as to how the Coldstream Guards , who appeared before Charles IL , at : Whitehall , after the Restoration , through their chief officer , General Monk , objected to be designated by His Majesty hia second Guards , and informed His Majesty that they were second to rn . ne , whereupon tbe King , pleased wifch the circumstance ,

said thoy \ v . re indeed second to none and named them his Coldstream Guards , and ordered them thenceforth to bear as their motto the words " Nulli secnndns . " If His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales the Grand Master of Masons of England directed the brethren of the various Lodges in the Province of East Lancashire to assemble before him with the object of naming and numbering the various

Lodges , and named Lodge Waverley No . 2 in order of merit , Brother Jones would be tho first to object and would immediately exclaim we are " Nulli seoundus . " He trusted that Bro . Jones would bo pleased wifch the inanimate jewel whioh had been presented to him , and said that amongst the living and animate jewels belonging to Lodge Waverley one of the most brilliant was Bro . Jones himself .

Bro . Jones , who waa deeply affected , then rose to thank the brethren He said : It is with a feeling of trepidation that I rise to reply on the present occasion . I am greatly surprised , and I feel my position to bo almost an overwhelming one ! You have placed mo in an awkward fix . And I scarcely know how or where to begin to thank you for this token of your esteem and regard , I certainly never

expected to receive so valuable a recognition of my humble services on behalf of the Waverley Lodgo . And I am afraid I do not deserve a tithe of tho enloKy sa eloquently expressed by my esteemed friend and BIT . Wright Wood the I . P . M . of tho Lodge . But this is a proud moment for me to feel and to know that I have the goodwill and tho esteem of my Brethren , who have certainly been to my faults

" A little blind , " nnd to my " Virtues more than kind . " This is itideed a red letter day in my Mosonio history , whioh I shall ever remember with gratitude , with pleasure , and with pride . I have to the beet of my ability tried to make onr Lodge Al in working the beautiful ceremonies , and ritual , and lam proud to know that the work of Lodgo Waverley has been complimented by Brethren of high

And so long as the younger Brethren of the Lodgo are united together by the bond of fraternal good fellowship , each one fostering a spirit of emulation to mako our Lodge famous for its good work , we shall continue to make advancement towards perfection . I remember , Sir , when I waa placed in that high and honourable

position which you now occupy . I then asked for the generous nssi * -t * 'nce of the Past Masters of the Lodge , and the hearty co-operation of the younger Brethren , nnd I promised I would do all I possibly could to maintain tho prestige of the Lodge , and promote tbe happiness of the Brethren . You gave me freely of your assistance then . But to-day , Sir , I have the testimony of your

approbation in this valuable Past Master's jewel , with whioh you have been pleased to decorate my breast . I shall ever esteem and value it as the greatest prize I have ever obtained , and which I shall always wear with pleasure and with pride . I also trust I shall wear it with honour to myself , and with credit to the Lodge of Waverley . Brethren I do moat heartily thank yon , one and all , for this valued
