CORNWALL .

THE Provincial Grand Lodge of Cornwall is to assemble in the Public Rooms , Bodmin , on the 17 th September at 11 a . m ., ; the entertaining Lodge being the One and All , No . 330 , Bodmin , which dates from 1810 , and which has one of

the largest rolls of Past Masters in the county , the senior P . M . being the esteemed Bro . Sir Charles B . Graves-Sawle , Bart ., P . G . W . of England , late Deputy Prov . G . M ., who was

in the Chair in 1854 . The last time the Provincial Grand Lodge was held at Bodmin was in 1887 , and the previous time was in 1874 , the meetings always being of an enjoyable character when under the wing of the old Lodge .

The Right Hon . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe Past Deputy Grand Master of England Prov . Grand Master will preside , and a large attendance is , consequently , expected . The meeting will be opened at 11 a . m . precisely , and at 12 . 30 a procession will be formed of the Brethren , who will walk to the Parish Church for the celebration of Divine

Service , and where the annual sermon will be preached . The procession will then reform and return to the Rooms , and the remaining business will be transacted . The agenda paper is suggestive of much business , and a number of alterations

and additions are likewise proposed to be made in the Benevolent Fund , so as to still further extend its usefulness . Several grants will also be proposed for more general purposes .

Demonstration At Galashiels.

DEMONSTRATION AT GALASHIELS .

ON Saturday afternoon an outdoor demonstration under the auspices of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Roxburgh , Peebles , and Selkirk shires was held within the Gala policies kindly granted by Brother John H . F . K . Scott , of Gala ,

for the occasion . Brethren from Peebles , Stow , Galashiels , Selkirk , Melrose , Innerleithen , Kelso , Jedburgh , and Hawick were . ; forward in large . numbers , eleven Lodges being represented . The gatherng , which was confined to members of the Graft , their families , and lady friends , numbered between

500 and 600 . The Brethren of Galashiels Lodge , No . 262 , met the members of the various Lodges at the station , and the procession from the station to Gala grounds was witnessed by enormous crowds of spectators . The leading Masons in the Province were present .

On arrival at Gala policies , Bro . Dr . Middleton Prov . G . M ., on the call of Bro . Hugh Murray Provincial Grand Din of Cers ., gave a short address . He said , by the kind indulgence of their esteemed Brother , the laird of Gala , he

was privileged on behalf of the Provincial Grand Lodge to extend to them a most cordial welcome upon this the first occasion of an outdoor gathering of the Masonic body in the district . It w . „ s not at all inappropriate that the gathering should be held in close proximity to the historic house of

Gala , because he found amongst the earliest records of the old Lodge of Haughfoot , which , used to meet at a small hamlet close to Stow , and at Selkirk and Galashiels alternately , mention was < made of the invitation of Sir James Scott of Gala and his brother ,- Thomas . Then , in more

recent times , in the early part of the sixties , they found that Captain Archibald Scott , the then laird of Gala , held Office in the Provincial Grand Lodge . In presence of so many friends and sympathisers it was unnecessary that he should say anything in commendation or defence of the organisation .

with which they were connected , beyond perhaps pointing to ijhe fact that their teachings were derived from the Volume of Sacred Law , which pointed out their duty to God , their neighbo-urs , and themselves—their duty to fear God and honour the King . Freemasonry was not

antagonistic to , but the handmaid of Christianity ; and it was even broader than Christianity , because under its banner were ranged Mahomedans , Jews , and Buddhists , as well as Christians . The labours of Freemasonry were not now directed to the rearing of edifices , but to the consolidation

of charity and good works , and he trusted that the Brethren would ever bear before them the force of the lesson expressed in those oft-quoted lines— " God hath made man one

Brotherhood , Flimself the master and the world their Lodge . " On the call oif Bro . Lawson , Galashiels , Dr . Middleton was thanked for his address . The sports were then proceeded with . — " Glasgow Herald . "

The West London Masonic Election Association is strongly recommending the case of Nellie Alice Louise Davidge , who is a candidate for the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls . The child is 8 years of age , the daughter of

the late Bro . R . W . Davidge , who was initiated in the Old Concord Lodge , No-. 172 , in 1892 , remaining a subscribing member thereof until his death . Proxies will be thankfull y received by our late Brother ' s widow , at Buxton House , Dale Road , Matlock .

********** The annual Masonic Rifle match between the Masonic Lodges attached to Metropolitan Volunteer Rifle Corps will be shot at Bisley on Saturday , 14 th September . The following are the Lodges eligible to compete—Honourable

Artillery Company ; Victoria Rifles ( No . 822 ) ; 2 nd ( South ) Middlesex Rifles Lodge ; London Scottish ; Queen ' s Westminster Lodge ( No . 2021 ); 18 th Middlesex ( Paddington ) Rifles Lodge ; 19 th Middlesex ( Bloomsbury ) Rifles Lodge ;

London Rifle Brigade Lodge and 1 st Surrey Rifles Lodge The prizes are two silver Gavels given by Col . Lambert ; the two Lodges making the highest scores will hold them foi the year .

ON Saturday afternoon the funeral of the late Bro . E . E . Hobbs , of Tyndall ' s Park , took place in the presence of a large gathering of friends . The first portion of the ceremony took place at All Saints , Clifton , where deceased was

a regular attendant , and the interment at Redland Green . Amongst those present at the graveside were members of the Moira Lodp-e , No . 326 . After the coffin had been lowered into the grave the Brethren present cast in sprigs of acacia . The inscription on the coffin was : " Edwin Ernest Hobbs , fell asleep , 21 st August 1901 , aged 51 years . —R . I . P . "

IN the presence of a large gathering of friends , principally connected with shipping and Masonic circles , prominent among them being several members of the Kirkdale Lodge ,

No . 1756 , ; bhe remains of the late Bro . James Moss were interred at Anfield Cemetery on Saturday afternoon . Numerous floral tributes were sent , including one from the Kirkdetle Lodge .

THE funeral of the late Bro . R . I . Bennett took place at Prestwich Parish Church , on Saturday . With the relatives and friends at the graveside there were representatives of the Concord Lodge , No . 1534 , the Friendship Lodge , No . 44 , and the Manchester Society of Architects .
