They said , their orders were to communicate this event to me immediately , and at the same time to add , in the name of the French Government , that this alteration , in the choice of the Negociators , would not produce any whatever in the disposition of the Directory
to bring the Negociation to a happy issue . I assured them I was extremely sorry to hear that they were recalled . That we had hitherto acted together so cordially , that it was to be lamentedany circumstance had arisen which made the French Government think it advisable to . put the Negociation into other hands .
