PRESTON . —Laying the Foundation of St . Mary ' s Church . —May 2 nd being the day appointed for laying tlie foundation of the new church , near the house of correction , to be called St . Mary ' s , ancl some pains ' having been taken to give publicity to the happy event , expectations were raised , and as the result proved , well founded , that a very considerable display of good feeling would be manifested towards the undertaking . Hopes had been entertained that the distinguished
honour of laying the first stone of the intended new church would have fallen to the cluty of that upright and most worthy man , Sir T . D . Heskcth , Bart . ; a domestic affliction , however , in the death of a near relative , prevented the realization of those iiopcs . The pleasing duty of commencing the good work was tben cheerfully accepted by the highly respected vicar of Preston ; arid if recent experience might assist its better performancethe Rev . gentleman possessed that advantagefor
