Tuesday , the 21-th of June , was the day fixed for a demonstration of patriotism and respect for the memory of Andrew Jackson , when the pageant surpassed any ever witnessed in New York . The people of the city and of the surrounding country poured into the public thoroughfares , either to join the procession or to witness the ceremonies : business of every kind was suspended , and the city was one vast scene of mourning .
