Burmah , vvas elected a member , and in a few well chosen words complimented thc brethren on their excellent working , and also said that he certainly should take every opportunity of attending the regular meetings . After " Hearty good wishes , " the lodge was closed .

THE GREAT CITY LODGE ( No . 1426 ) . —BRO . J AMES STEVENS' LECTURE . —As has been already announced in these columns , the Preceptorship of this lodge of instruction has been undertaken by Bro . James Stevens , the first W . M . of the mother lodge and originator of the lodge of instruction , which meets every Thursday at the Masons' Hall , Masons' Avenue , Coleman-street , E . C ., at 6 . 30 p . m . The situation is central and very convenient , and the members are earnest workers , vvho evidently appreciate the

connection of the lodge of instruction with one of the best known of our working City lodges . To inaugurate his acceptance of the position of Preceptor , a large assemblage of members and visitors attended on Thursday , the 16 th ult ., to hear the first of Bro . Stevens' lectures on ritual and ceremonial . His remarks on this occasion vvere necessarily confined to the First Degree , and foreshadowed the line of working which it has been agreed shall be carried out under his Preceptorship . The lecture was given in his

usual lucid and happy manner , and was listened to with unabated interest throughout , many brethren testifying after its close to the attention paid by him to the several salient points of importance so clearly explained that none could . fail to comprehend them , and obtain hints whereby to commit to memory details of essential value otherwise requiring considerable practice to obtain . The lecturer , thoroughly conversant vvith his subject , held the attention of his audience for upwards of two hours , having by desire waived

the proposed interval ; and when , at the close of an exceptionally pleasant evening , a hearty and cordial vote of thanks to him vvas accorded , all present acknowledged that praise was given where praise was due . Amongst the proofs of great interest in Bro . Stevens' lectures may be mentioned the attendance of brethren from towns in which he has been formerly heard , some of whom became members of the lodge , with assurances of frequent

attendance during the present season , in the course of vvhich other lectures on the Second and Third Degrees will be given . Before the Iodge was closed , announcement was made of the rehearsal , on Thursday , the 6 th inst ., ot the ceremony of installation , vvith full opening and closing of the Board of Installed Masters , and an interesting evening ' s work , at which brethren of other lodges will be welcomed , is anticipated .

CHAUCER LODGE ( No . 1540 J . —This lodge held its usual weekly meeting at the Old White Hart Hotel , Borough , on Tuesday , the 28 th ult ,, when there were present Bros . W . W . Block , W . meeting were read and confirmed . The lodge vvas opened in the Second Degree , and Bro . Hopkins offering himself as a candidate for raising , vvas examined and entrusted . Lodge was opened in the Third Degree , and the W . M . rehearsed the raising ceremony , Bro . Hopkins candidate . The W . Gilbert , and of the numerous brethren vvho attended his funeral on the p . eibns Friday to pay the last tribute of respect to his undoubted merit , in most eloquent terms proposed that the Secretary be

requested to inform Mrs . Gilbert and hir family of the deep regret and pain felt by them at the loss she and they had sustained , and to express their heartfelt sympathj with them in this the hour of their bereavement . This resolution was seconded by Bro . Stroud in very feeling terms , and Bro . J . Sims , after relating that the late Bro . Gilbert was the means of His ( Bro . Sims ) initiation into Freemasonry , alluded to Bro , Gilbert ' s unbounded benevolence in . and

out of the Craft , and his unremitting labours at all elections on behalf of deserving candidates , and spoke in the highest terms of their late brother and host . Bro . Craggs , expressing similar sentiments , supported the resolution . Bro . Wood also spoke of his esteem ancl sorrow , and the resolution was unanimously carried .

Bro . Gardner informed the lodge that , acting on their behalf , he had sent a wreath , of Masonic design , to be placed among more than Jo others sent on the occasion of Bro . Gilbert ' s funeral . On the proposition of Bro . Stroud , seconded by Bro . Ayling , thc members expressed their wish to pay the cost of the wreath , and the lodge was closed .

M . for the ensning fortnight . A Christmas gift of 21 s . was unanimously voted to the Tyler . Bro . King , Secretary , then placed his resignation in the hands of the

brethren , his business requiring him to reside at Brighton , and in doing so expressed his deep and sincere pain in this formal sever , ance , but whenever in London on Monday evenings he promised himself the pleasnre of meeting again his numerous friends . Bro . Johnson proposed that the Secretary's resignation be accepted vvith regret , and as a mark of the esteem in which the lodge held him he be elected a permanent honorary member . This being seconded by Bro , Westley , vvas carried unanimously . Bro . King thanked

the lodge for the honour conferred upon him , and proposed that Bro . Andrews , the present assistant Secretary , be elected Secretary —seconded by Bro . Johnson , Preceptor , and carried nnanimously . The annual supper was then arranged for Monday , the 24 th inst ., and Bro . Westley was requested to preside , and tlie officers of the evening appointed as a Committee to assist the executive in

promoting the details . The tickets vvere settled at four shillings each . The ceremony of installation was then announced to be rehearsed at the Earl of Lathom Lodge of Instruction , Station Hotel , Camberwell New-road , on Wednesday , the *; th inst ., by Bro . Witts , W . M . of the mother lodge , and all Past Masters , Masters , and Wardens vvere especially invited , as a Masonic treat vvas confidently anticipated . All Masonic business being ended , the lodge was closed .

The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed , the ballot vvas taken on behalf of Bro . Isaacson , of 18 S , and it proving unanimous , he was most impressively exalted to the Degree of a R . A . Mason . The woiking of all the officers being perfect to a degree . Letters pleading inability to attend having been read , the chapter was formally closed . At the banquet vvhich followed , the usual toasts received full justice .

THE GREAT CITY LODGE ( No . 1426 ) . —BRO . J AMES STEVENS' LECTURE . —As has been already announced in these columns , the Preceptorship of this lodge of instruction has been undertaken by Bro . James Stevens , the first W . M . of the mother lodge and originator of the lodge of instruction , which meets every Thursday at the Masons' Hall , Masons' Avenue , Coleman-street , E . C ., at 6 . 30 p . m . The situation is central and very convenient , and the members are earnest workers , vvho evidently appreciate the

connection of the lodge of instruction with one of the best known of our working City lodges . To inaugurate his acceptance of the position of Preceptor , a large assemblage of members and visitors attended on Thursday , the 16 th ult ., to hear the first of Bro . Stevens' lectures on ritual and ceremonial . His remarks on this occasion vvere necessarily confined to the First Degree , and foreshadowed the line of working which it has been agreed shall be carried out under his Preceptorship . The lecture was given in his

usual lucid and happy manner , and was listened to with unabated interest throughout , many brethren testifying after its close to the attention paid by him to the several salient points of importance so clearly explained that none could . fail to comprehend them , and obtain hints whereby to commit to memory details of essential value otherwise requiring considerable practice to obtain . The lecturer , thoroughly conversant vvith his subject , held the attention of his audience for upwards of two hours , having by desire waived

the proposed interval ; and when , at the close of an exceptionally pleasant evening , a hearty and cordial vote of thanks to him vvas accorded , all present acknowledged that praise was given where praise was due . Amongst the proofs of great interest in Bro . Stevens' lectures may be mentioned the attendance of brethren from towns in which he has been formerly heard , some of whom became members of the lodge , with assurances of frequent

attendance during the present season , in the course of vvhich other lectures on the Second and Third Degrees will be given . Before the Iodge was closed , announcement was made of the rehearsal , on Thursday , the 6 th inst ., ot the ceremony of installation , vvith full opening and closing of the Board of Installed Masters , and an interesting evening ' s work , at which brethren of other lodges will be welcomed , is anticipated .

Gilbert and hir family of the deep regret and pain felt by them at the loss she and they had sustained , and to express their heartfelt sympathj with them in this the hour of their bereavement . This resolution was seconded by Bro . Stroud in very feeling terms , and Bro . J . Sims , after relating that the late Bro . Gilbert was the means of His ( Bro . out of the Craft , and his unremitting labours at all elections on behalf of deserving candidates , and spoke in the highest terms of their late brother and host . Bro . Craggs , expressing similar sentiments , supported the resolution . Bro . Wood also spoke of his esteem ancl sorrow , and the resolution was unanimously carried .

Bro . Gardner informed the lodge that , acting on their behalf , he had sent a wreath , of Masonic design , to be placed among more than Jo others sent on the occasion of Bro . Gilbert ' s funeral . On the proposition of Bro . Stroud , seconded by Bro . Ayling , thc members expressed their wish to pay the cost of the wreath , and the lodge was closed .

Bro . Johnson proposed that the Secretary's resignation be accepted vvith regret , and as a mark of the esteem in which the lodge held him he be elected a permanent honorary member . This being seconded by Bro , Westley , vvas carried unanimously . Bro . King thanked

the lodge for the honour conferred upon him , and proposed that Bro . Andrews , the present assistant Secretary , be elected Secretary —seconded by Bro . Johnson , Preceptor , and carried nnanimously . The annual supper was then arranged for Monday , the 24 th inst ., and Bro . Westley was requested to preside , and tlie officers of the evening appointed as a Committee to assist the executive in

promoting the details . The tickets vvere settled at four shillings each . The ceremony of installation was then announced to be rehearsed at the Earl of Lathom Lodge of Instruction , Station Hotel , Camberwell New-road , on Wednesday , the *; th inst ., by Bro . Witts , W . M . of the mother lodge , and all Past Masters , Masters , and Wardens vvere especially invited , as a Masonic treat vvas confidently anticipated .
