The lodge having been opened by the VV . M ., Bro . C . Baker , and the minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed , the Secretary informed the brethren that the initiation of Captain W . S . Rumsey , who had been duly balloted for and accepted at a former meeting , must be deferred to a lodge of emergency , the said candidate being absent from the island on a Wednesday . A

telegram from Bro . J . Le M . Prowings , received just before the opening of the lodge , vvas next read , stating that the brother vvas unable to take the M . M . ' s Degree on that night . Bro . W . Fentum , theOrganist , greatlyenhanced the proceedings of the evening byhis talent . TheSec . read a letter from the widow of a late brother applying for relief , and the case having been investigated , the usual temporary relief from the

Charity Fund of the lodge was granted . Bros . D . A . Du Morsh , of Lodge Noordstar , Alkmaar , Holland , and J . Le Montais Prowings , late of this lodge , vvere proposed as joining members . After the usual routine business had been disposed of the Secretary took an opportunity of recommending the Freemason as the organ of the Craft , and " The Cosmopolitan Masonic Almanac for 1 S 90 , " the two being powerful

means of diffusing Masonic knowledge among thebrethren . ( This brought three new subscribers and found a sale for nine almanacs , and this we consider is worthy of the imitation of other Secretaries . ) There being no other transaction to be brouglit forward , and the " Hearty good wishes" of the visitors expressed , the lodge vvas closed , and the brethren , to the number of

50 , adjourned to the banquet room of the hall , where a sumptuous supper had been provided , and vvhich was heartily discussed and ample justice done to . The management of the gastronomic part of the evening ' s proceedings having fallen once more into the able hands of Bro . George Rogers , P . M ., the Masonic caterer of Jersey par excellence . the

The after proceedings were conducted ^ in happy manner usual amongst the brethren of this , the senior lodge in the province . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts vvere given by the VV . M ., most cordially received , and responded to . During the evening an excellent programme of

instrumental music vvas carried out by Bros . J . L . du l ' aye , Thos . Adderson , C . Lincoln , H . Becker , G . Proust , F . Vincent , and others , and Bro . W . Fentum , Org . J 244 , musical director , to whom a special toast vvas given by the W . M . for getting up this entertainment . The brethren dispersed at a late hour .

LEWES . South Saxon Lodge ( No . 311 ) . —The annual meeting of this lodge was held at Freemasons' Hall , Highstreet , on the 15 th ult ., when there was an unusually large attendance . Bro . J . W . Broad was installed as VV . M . for the ensuing year , in succession to Bro . Smith Stone , the

latter being presented with a Past Master ' s jewel for the efficient manner in which he had discharged the duties of his office . to the fact that Bro . Stevenson had been a member of that lodge for 4 6 years , and Installing Master for more than a quarter of a century . He dilated upon the high position vvhich Bro . Stevenson occupied in the Craft , and the esteem in vvhich he was universally held . Bro . Stevenson responded in very appropriate terms , observing' that he felt sure the impressive ceremony vvhich had

Rumsey , who had been duly balloted for and accepted at a former meeting , must be deferred to a lodge of emergency , the said candidate being absent from the island on a Wednesday . A

telegram from Bro . J . Le M . Prowings , received just before the opening of the lodge , vvas next read , stating that the brother vvas unable to take the M . M . ' s Degree on that night . Bro . W . Fentum , theOrganist , greatlyenhanced the proceedings of the evening byhis talent . TheSec . read a letter from the widow of a late brother applying for relief , and the case having been investigated , the usual temporary relief from the

Charity Fund of the lodge was granted . Bros . D . A . Du Morsh , of Lodge Noordstar , Alkmaar , Holland , and J . Le Montais Prowings , late of this lodge , vvere proposed as joining members . After the usual routine business had been disposed of the Secretary took an opportunity of recommending the Freemason as the organ of the Craft , and " The Cosmopolitan Masonic Almanac for 1 S 90 , " the two being powerful

means of diffusing Masonic knowledge among thebrethren . ( This brought three new subscribers and found a sale for nine almanacs , and this we consider is worthy of the imitation of other Secretaries . ) There being no other transaction to be brouglit forward , and the " Hearty good wishes" of the visitors expressed , the lodge vvas closed , and the brethren , to the number of

50 , adjourned to the banquet room of the hall , where a sumptuous supper had been provided , and vvhich was heartily discussed and ample justice done to .
