Speth then sketched the history of the Philo-Musicce ct Architectures Soeietas . an institution which was formed in 1725 ; , and lasted but a few years , but whose minutes are still preserved to us . This society , which comprised Masons only , vvas

unauthorised , was even reprimanded b y Grand Lodge , but worked the Third Degree , and its proceedings appear to be the earliest established record of anything of the kind . From this period the Master Masons' Degree appears gradually to have spread until it obtained universally , though its raison d ' etre cannot be said to

have been by any means satisfactorily explained . We regret that so much that vvas full of information and was treated in Bro . Speth's critical , but not dogmatic , style is incapable of being reproduced in our pages , his explanations and illustrations anent Masonic words being intensely interesting , but its

nature and character preclude it . Bro . Speth concluded a learned , thoughtful , and suggestive lecture—a lecture in which he showed himself both student , teacher , and philosopher—in the following words : " And now , brethren , to sum up the whole matter . My contention is that in early days there vvere two

ceremonies , one only of which vvas mystic ; that in course of time these were performed consecutively on the same evening and practically became one ; that they contained all the essentials of our present rite ; that about 1724 or 1725 they vvere first split up into three by some adventurous lodge ; that this practice vvas by no means

universal even as late as 1738 , and that it gradually obtained throughout the Craft . I have no doubt that my special assertions here and there may be contested vvith some show of success , but I feel confident that as a whole my thesis will sooner or later win for itself general acceptance ; it smooths over many difficulties

and reconciles many discrepancies wliich have hitherto puzzled the Masonic student . " Bro . Speth ' s lecture vvas listened to vvith the keenest interest and appreciation , and a most cordial vote of thanks to him vvas proposed by Bro . I . GERRARD , P . M .-54 .

Dep . Prov . G . M ., Bro . H . SMITH , who had taken the chair owing to the retirement ' of the President . It vvas carried unanimousl y and most enthusiastically . Bro . SPETH , who was evidentl y much gratified by the very favourable impression he had produced , thanked the brethren of the Wakefield Masonic

Literary Societ y for the patient and attentive hearing they had given to him , and for the high compliment they had paid him b y inviting him to visit them . He could not forget that it vvas to Wakefield that he vvas first asked , and whatever mi ght be his reception in the other towns of Yorkshire vvhich vvere included in his

programme , he would carry away vvith him a very lively sense of the kind appreciation they had shown him , and the hearty Yorkshire welcome accorded to him . After the lecture a social hour vvas passed vvith the brethren , during vvhich Bro . Speth won golden opinions through his genial wit and humrur .

York lodges , forming a most appreciative audience . The lecturer vvas introduced by the acting W . M . in a few sentences . The lecture occupied about 85 minutes , and was most attentively followed throughout .

At its conclusion , Bro . T . B . WHYTEIIEAB moved a vote of thanks to the lecturer , and requested a representative of another lodge to second the same . This vvas done by Bro . TODD , 236 , supported by members of the Eboracum and Agricola Lodges , ancl was carried vvith acclamation . The lodge vvas then closed .

On Thursday , the 23 rd ult ., a bazaar vvas held in the Masonic Hall , Mirfield , for the purpose of reducing the debt on the building latel y erected b y the brethren of No . 1102 . The efforts of the ladies interested in the bazaar had brought together a goodly array of both
