1 he General Committee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will hold their regular monthly meeting' at Freemasons' Hall to-morrow ( Saturday ) , at 4 p . m . His announced that the Marquis of Lome will preside at the 75 th Anniversary Festival of the Royal Caledonian Asvlum .

Professor Tyndall has given a donation of fifty guineas to the Belfast Society for the Kxtention of University Teaching . Her Majesty has sent donations of game and cast linen to King's College , St . George ' s , Great Northern Central , the London , and other hospitals .

Lord Hastings has left England for Australia on a visit to Bro . Lord Carrington , his brother-in-law , at Sydney . His lordship proposes returning home in May . Sir Edward Guinness has contributed / ' ioo to the Royal Victoria Hospital , Bournemouth , in commemoration of the visit of the Prince of Wales on the 16 th ult .

Bro . the Earl and Countess of Jersey , Bro . Viscount and Viscountess Valentia , and members of most of the county families were present at the Bicester Hunt Ball on Tuesday evening . ESThe Lady Mayoress will hold receptions at the Mansion House on the first and third Tuesdays in every month until further notice , the first being arranged for Tuesday next , the 4 th inst .

We are glad to hear that Bro . Christopher Sykes , M . P ., who some time since visited the south of France for the benefit of his health , has greatly improved and will be able to resume his public duties next month . The announcement has been contradicted that Bro . Lord and Lady Brooke intend visiting the Riviera this year . They have been spending the winter at Easton Lodge , and have no present intention of leaving England .

The marriage of Lord Cantilupe , eldest son of Bro . the Earl of De la Warr , vvith Miss Dorothy Heseltine , eldest daughter of Mr . John P . Heseltine , of Walhampton Park , Lymington , has been arranged to take place in July . The Right Hon . W . E . Gladstone and Bro . the Marquis of Hartington have issued invitations to their respective supporters in the House of Commons , to be in their places at the opening of Parliament for the transaction of business on the nth inst .

The usual letters have been addressed by the Marquis of Salisbury and Mr . W . H . Smith , M . P ., as leaders of the House of Commons to the friends and supporters of the Government , announcing that important business will be submitted for consideration , and requesting them to be present at the opening of Parliament , whicli will take place on Tuesday , the 1 ith instant .

The St . James' Union Lodge of Instruction , No . 180 , will in future meet at the St . James' Restaurant , Piccadilly entrance , on Monday evenings at S o ' clock precisely , Bro . Ernest Farwig , P . M . 1 S 0 , Preceptor . VVe wish the lodge of instruction every success in its new quarters . Bro . G . Reynolds , I . P . M . and Secretary 1614 , has kindly consented to act as Secretary pro tem .

Strenuous efforts are being made for the establishment of a Polytechnic for South-West London , on the same lines as the Peoples' Palace at Mile End . The Earl of Cadogan presided at a meeting in the Chelsea Town Hall in furtherance of the project on Tuesday , and the Charity Commissioners have undertaken to devote £ 50 , 000 towards it on condition that a like sum is raised by the ratepayers . About £ 18 , 000 remains to be subscribed .

' The University Boat Clubs have not been able to agree as yet to the date for the Oxford and Cambridge boat race . The dark blues wish it fixed for the 22 nd March , when the tide will suit at a convenient hour of the day , but Cambridge objects to so early a date on the ground that their Term does not end till the Sth March . Their crew , therefore , will have the time for practice on the course seriously cut down , and propose the 2 yth March , when the tide suits at an hour inconvenient for the attendance of the public .

Bro . | . L . Toole was entertained at dinner by the Savage Club on Saturday last , previous to his departure for Australia , there being a very large attendance on the occasion . A picture is in course of being painted for the forthcoming exhibition at the Royal Academy , in illusl ration of a Saturday night at the old club quarters in the Savoy , and among those who will be introduced into it are Bros . J . L . Toole , Henry Irving , Sir Somers Vine , and Sir Frederick' Abel .

Bro . Alderman Sir Polydore de Keyser presided on Saturday last at a banquet given by him , vvith the permission of Bro . Lord Mayor Isaacs , in the Egyptian Hall ofthe Mansion House , to those who had assisted , as far as England vvas concerned , at the International Exhiuition at Paris last year . Bro . the Lord Mayor vvas present as a guest , and so also was M . Waddington , the French Ambassador , who distributed the crosses of the Legion of Honour awarded to

English exhibitors . Bro . Colonel Edis presided at the annual regimental dinner and prize distribution of the Artists' Corps at the Criterion , on Saturday last , and in the course of one of his speeches announced that to the £ 400 received from the

Lord Mayor ' s Fund , the regiment itself would add £ . 500 or £ 0 oo in order that it might be fully and completely equipped , the prizes were distributed by < eneral P . Smith , commanding the Home District , in the absence of Bro . Sir Frederick Leighton , through illness .

Bro . W . R . Baskcomb , of the Drury Lane Lodge and "elsewhere , " has been delighting audiences at Westminster , and also at Gaywood , in Norfolk , by giving his amateur " Monopolylogue " entertainment in aid of a local Charity . Bro . Baskcomb ' s histrionic and musical talents are well known , and the versatility displayed on these occasions vvas extraordinary . He also had the advantage of being assisted by his gifted wife , who is a gold medalist and Associate of the Academy of Music .

Bro . Clarence William Harcourt , solicitor , of 13 , Moorgate-street , died , after six days' illness , on Sunday at Selden House , Anerley-road , S . E . His age vvas 59 years . Bro . James Judd ' s many friends in the City will hear with pleasure that lie is now on the high road to convalescence . On Sunday he was able , for the first time , to leave his bed .

Bro . Edmund Yates entertained at the Albion on Wednesday , Bro . the Lord Mayor , Mr . Alderman and Sheriff Bro . Sheriff Harris , and a distinguished company of journalists and litterateurs . Bro . Augustus Sala has again entered into the matrimonial state . On Saturday , at St . Margaret ' s , Westminster , he was married to Miss Bessie Stannard , third daughter of Mr . R . Stannard , CE .

On Saturday last , Mr . Henry Bailey ( one of Mr . Isidore de Solla ' s most successful pupils ) sang in place of Signor Foli , at the Albeit Hall Scotch Festival , and , as on former occasions , met with very marked success . Bro . Lord Halsbury , Lord Chancellor , and Lady Halsbury have been suffering from the prevailing indue za , and so , too , have their children , who on recovering were attacked with the meash s , and are not convalescent enough to visit London .

I he 31 st anniversary of the birth of the German Emperor vvas celebrated on Monday by the German residents in London , the German Ambassador , Count Hatzfeldt , giving a dinner party at the Embassy in Carlton House-terrace , in honour of the event .

The Marquis of Salisbury has almost regained his health and takes exercise daily in Hatfield Park . Acting , however , under medical advice , he has not visited London , but has transacted the business of the Foreign Office at Hatfield , with the help of his private secretaries .

Bro . foole , who has been dined and otherwise entertained to an extent which must seriously have impaired his digestive organs , will not be without the consolations of friendship , even on his road to Australia . Mr . Clement Scott will accompany him as far as Brindisi .

We are gratified to hear that there is a decided improvement in the condition of Bro . Alderman Rena ' s . On Monday he was able to be removed from Eastbourne to his residence at Highbury . It is hoped that in a week or so he will be again able to appear in civic circles .

The installation meeting of the Star Chapter , No . 1275 , took place at the Ship , Greenwich , on Tuesday , the 28 th ult ., when Comp . Crook vvas installed as M . E . Z . ; Comp . 1 enedetti , as H . ; and Comp . Fleck , as J . We hope to give a full account next week .

I here died recently at Ober I' . sshngen , Wurtemburg , Bro . F . W . Bieitling , a P . G . P . of the Grand Lodge of England , and P . M . of the L on and Lamb Lodge , No . 102 . Bro . BreitVmg was initiated at Stuttgart , but was elected a joining member of the Lion and Lamb Lodge so long ago as 1 S 39 .

Bro . Sir John Bennett lectured before the members of the Halloon Society , on Friday evening , the 24 th ult ., on the subject of "The Light of the Future —Electricity . ' On Friday next , the 7 th inst ., Alderman Sir J . VV . Ellis , Part ., M . P ., will take the chair at a lecture on " Sewage Utilisation . " to be given to the society by Mr . W . C . Sillar .

Mr . C . VV . Somerset , the original Lord Donncourt of Mr . Seebohm's version of " Little Lord Fauntleroy , " and the late exponent of the same part in Mrs . Bennett ' s own adaptation , has been engaged to play Cyrus Blenkarn in " The Middleman " company starting in February to visit Liverpool , Manchester , and all the principle provincial towns .

John Aird , M . P ., has consented to preside at the dinner that is to be given to-day ( Friday ) , in aid ofthe Cabdrivers ' Benevolent Association . The association , it may be stated , grants annuities of £ 20 to aged or infirm cabmen . Cabmen themselves are expected to support it by a subscription of 5 s . a year , and 1200 do so , but as there are Sooo actually employed in London it is apparent that so far the movement has not been taken up vvith any very great enthusiasm .

VVe-learn vvith regret of the decease , on Friday , the 24 th ult ., of Mrs . Renals , mother of Bro . Alderman Renals . The deceased lady , who vvas in her seventy-ninth year , had been ailing for some few days , but up to quite the last nothing serious was anticipated . Deceased 'eaves to mourn

her loss a husband and four sons . The funeral took place on Tuesday , the 28 th ult ., at Nottingham Cemetery , there being a large atte dance of mourners . The Alderman , by reason of his indisposition , was unable to follow tlie body to the grave .

The Primrose Club will hold their I'ancy Dress Pall at the Savoy Hotel . Victoria Embankment , to-night ( Friday ) , when "The Pompadour Band" of young ladies , under the direction of Miss Eleanor Clausen , will take part in the entertainment by discoursing favourite selections during the evening , and doubtless add to the laurels they deservedly

earned for themselves last season at the Albert Hall . The dance music will be performed by " L'Orchestre Militaire ;" conductor , Mr . J . A . Hamilton . The arrangements are under the sole control of Lieut .-Colonel Ord , thc energetic Hon . Secretary of the Primrose Club . The next Smoking Concert will be held at the Club on Friday , the 7 th inst ., under the presidency of Sir | ohn Campbell , Bart ., C . B .

THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a time when much thought is being' given to this matter , a practical suggestion may be of service . Last year more than £ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers in this country , to the great injury

of our own working people , so true is it that "evil is wrought by want of thought as well as want of heart . " If all consumers would purchase Bryant and May ' s Matches , that firm would be enabled to pay £ 1000 a week more in wages . —ADVT .

It is stated that the Queen , in March , will go to Aix-les Bains , not to Homburg , for a few weeks . The Aldersgate Lodge , No . 1657 , of vvhich Bro . Alderman Renals is W . M ., will hold an emergency meeting on Monday next . Bro . the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon will be leaving England shortly for foreign parts , having arranged to travel for the next five months through Italy and Greece .

Her Majesty has been pleased to present a quantity of linen and a number of pheasants for the use of the patients in the Royal Free Hospital , Gray's Inn-road . Miss Ellen'Terry has been on the stage 33 years . Patti has been 27 years on the operatic stage : while Mrs . Stirling

( now retired ) was for nearly 50 years before the public . We are glad to hear that Bro . the Marquisof Hartington has very much improved in health lately , and is expected to be able to leave Murton Hall , Norfolk , before the week is out .

At a Masonic bazaar held at Mirfield for the purpose of reducing the debt on the building lately erected by the brethren of Lodge No . 1107 , the handsome sum of £ 390 was raised . Bro . Parke , who , in the capacity of surgeon , accompanied Mr . Stanley in his last search expedition , vvas entertained at a banquet by the Freemasons of Alexandria , where he was formerly stationed .

"Collector" desires to thank those brethren who have been good enough to send him on a copy of their Iod ^ e summons to add to his collection , and will be glad to receive others addressed " Collector , " care of Editor , Freemason . The Exchange Telegraph Company is informed that the principal speakers at the dinner at the City Liberal Club on the 4 th inst . will be the Earl of Aberdeen , Sir James Whitehead , Sir Charles Russell , and Mr . Lady Stanley , wife of Bro . Lord Stanley of Preston Governor-General of the Dominion of Canada , has been suffering from a severe attack of the influenza epidemic , having been overtaken vvith it about a fortnight since . Bro . Lieut .-Col . J . Perry Godfrey , VV . M . of the Alliance Lodge , No . 1 S 27 , was on Tuesday last , the 28 th ult ., installed by Bro . Chas . T . Tyler , P . Z ., in the chair of H ' . in the Cyrus Chapter , No . 21 , at the Ship and Turtle , Leadenhall-street .

The Prince of Wales arrived at Marlborough House from Sandringham on Monday , and attended the marriage of the Due de Santona vvith Mdlle . de Murrieta . Bro . General Lord Wolseley and Lady Wolseley , and the other guests of the Prince and Princess of Wales , left Sandringham early in the week .

It is proposed to erect at Westminster a panorama representing the Bastile , and the Old Rue St . Antoine ( year 17 S 9 ) . A company vvith acapital of £ 40 , 000 , in £ ' jshares , is being promoted for the purpose . Amongst the first subscribers is Mr . Henry Garle , while the directors will include Bro . Ex-Sheriff Newton ( Chairman ) and Bro . Alderman Renals . The company has been registered by Bros . T . Beard and Sons , of 10 , Basinghall-street .

I he Corn Exchange , Northampton , was the scene of an interesting gathering last week . Upwards of Soo old people were entertained to a substantial meal b y the Freemasons of the town , and a subsequent musical and miscellaneous entertainment . The whole proceedings reflected the greatest credit on those who organised the treat and contributed so liberally to the fund . We hope to give a full report in our next .

Isaacs at the Mansion House , on Monday , for the purpose of suggesting the advisability of erecting a memorial to the late Lord Napier of Magdala , amongst those present being Bros . Admiral Lord Alcester , Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., and Alderman Sir Reginald

Hanson , Bart . On his lordship ' s advice , those present at once formed themselves into a committee , vvith power to add to their number , to carry out the proposal . What shape the memorial should take was left an open question for the present , but £ 1300 was at once subscribed towards its fulfilment . A vote of thanks to his lordship was cordially voted , and the proceedings then terminated .

I EMPERANCE IN THE ARMY . —The cause of temperance in the army will not be lost s ght of at the forthcoming Military Exhibition at Chelsea , vvhich will be opened next May . It is the intention of Messrs . Spiers and Pond , the refreshment contractors , to erect a handsome pavilion in the grounds in which , amid appropriate and ornamental surroundings , not only tea and coffee and a _ rated waters

will be sold , but all the temperance beverages which now compete for the favour of the public . This will be a most valuable experiment , and will , we may be sure , be watched with interest by the military authorities , who will be able to judge of the suitability of the various beverages

for sale in regimental canteens . Thus the temperance cause will be a gainer , and this establishment has an additional interest in view of the proposal made by Mr . Caine to bring before the notice of the House of Commons tbe good word done by Sir Frederick Roberts with regard to temperance among the troops in Hindostan .

Lord Mayor Isaacs , in the Egyptian Hall ofthe Mansion House , to those who had assisted , as far as England vvas concerned , at the International Exhiuition at Paris last year . Bro . the Lord Mayor vvas present as a guest , and so also was M . Waddington , the French Ambassador , who distributed the crosses of the Legion of Honour awarded to

English exhibitors . Bro . Colonel Edis presided at the annual regimental dinner and prize distribution of the Artists' Corps at the Criterion , on Saturday last , and in the course of one of his speeches announced that to the £ 400 received from the

Lord Mayor ' s Fund , the regiment itself would add £ . 500 or £ 0 oo in order that it might be fully and completely equipped , the prizes were distributed by < eneral P . Smith , commanding the Home District , in the absence of Bro . Sir Frederick Leighton , through illness .

Bro . Baskcomb ' s histrionic and musical talents are well known , and the versatility displayed on these occasions vvas extraordinary . He also had the advantage of being assisted by his gifted wife , who is a gold medalist and Associate of the Academy of Music .

Bro . Clarence William Harcourt , solicitor , of 13 , Moorgate-street , died , after six days' illness , on Sunday at Selden House , Anerley-road , S . E . His age vvas 59 years . Bro . James Judd ' s many friends in the City will hear with pleasure that lie is now on the high road to convalescence . On Sunday he was able , for the first time , to leave his bed .

Bro . Edmund Yates entertained at the Albion on Wednesday , Bro . the Lord Mayor , Mr . Alderman and Sheriff Bro . Sheriff Harris , and a distinguished company of journalists and litterateurs . Bro . Augustus Sala has again entered into the matrimonial state . On Saturday , at St . Margaret ' s , Westminster , he was married to Miss Bessie Stannard , third daughter of Mr . R . Stannard , CE .

On Saturday last , Mr . Henry Bailey ( one of Mr . Isidore de Solla ' s most successful pupils ) sang in place of Signor Foli , at the Albeit Hall Scotch Festival , and , as on former occasions , met with very marked success . Bro . Lord Halsbury , Lord Chancellor , and Lady Halsbury have been suffering from the prevailing indue za , and so , too , have their children , who on recovering were attacked with the meash s , and are not convalescent enough to visit London .

I he 31 st anniversary of the birth of the German Emperor vvas celebrated on Monday by the German residents in London , the German Ambassador , Count Hatzfeldt , giving a dinner party at the Embassy in Carlton House-terrace , in honour of the event .

The Marquis of Salisbury has almost regained his health and takes exercise daily in Hatfield Park . Acting , however , under medical advice , he has not visited London , but has transacted the business of the Foreign Office at Hatfield , with the help of his private secretaries .

Bro . foole , who has been dined and otherwise entertained to an extent which must seriously have impaired his digestive organs , will not be without the consolations of friendship , even on his road to Australia . Mr . Clement Scott will accompany him as far as Brindisi .

We are gratified to hear that there is a decided improvement in the condition of Bro . Alderman Rena ' s . On Monday he was able to be removed from Eastbourne to his residence at Highbury . It is hoped that in a week or so he will be again able to appear in civic circles .

Bro . Sir John Bennett lectured before the members of the Halloon Society , on Friday evening , the 24 th ult ., on the subject of "The Light of the Future —Electricity . ' On Friday next , the 7 th inst ., Alderman Sir J . VV . Ellis , Part ., M . P ., will take the chair at a lecture on " Sewage Utilisation . " to be given to the society by Mr . W . C . Sillar .

Mr . C . VV . Somerset , the original Lord Donncourt of Mr . Seebohm's version of " Little Lord Fauntleroy , " and the late exponent of the same part in Mrs . Bennett ' s own adaptation , has been engaged to play Cyrus Blenkarn in " The Middleman " company starting in February to visit Liverpool , Manchester , and all the principle provincial towns .

John Aird , M . P ., has consented to preside at the dinner that is to be given to-day ( Friday ) , in aid ofthe Cabdrivers ' Benevolent Association . The association , it may be stated , grants annuities of £ 20 to aged or infirm cabmen . Cabmen themselves are expected to support it by a subscription of 5 s . a year , and 1200 do so , but as there are Sooo actually employed in London it is apparent that so far the movement has not been taken up vvith any very great enthusiasm .

VVe-learn vvith regret of the decease , on Friday , the 24 th ult ., of Mrs . Renals , mother of Bro . Alderman Renals . The deceased lady , who vvas in her seventy-ninth year , had been ailing for some few days , but up to quite the last nothing serious was anticipated . Deceased 'eaves to mourn

her loss a husband and four sons . The funeral took place on Tuesday , the 28 th ult ., at Nottingham Cemetery , there being a large atte dance of mourners . The Alderman , by reason of his indisposition , was unable to follow tlie body to the grave .

The Primrose Club will hold their I'ancy Dress Pall at the Savoy Hotel . Victoria Embankment , to-night ( Friday ) , when "The Pompadour Band" of young ladies , under the direction of Miss Eleanor Clausen , will take part in the entertainment by discoursing favourite selections during the evening , and doubtless add to the laurels they deservedly

earned for themselves last season at the Albert Hall . The dance music will be performed by " L'Orchestre Militaire ;" conductor , Mr . J . A . Hamilton . ( now retired ) was for nearly 50 years before the public . We are glad to hear that Bro . the Marquisof Hartington has very much improved in health lately , and is expected to be able to leave Murton Hall , Norfolk , before the week is out .

At a Masonic bazaar held at Mirfield for the purpose of reducing the debt on the building lately erected by the brethren of Lodge No . 1107 , the handsome sum of £ 390 was raised . Bro . Parke , who , in the capacity of surgeon , accompanied Mr . Stanley in his last search expedition , vvas entertained at a banquet by the Freemasons of Alexandria , where he was formerly stationed .

I he Corn Exchange , Northampton , was the scene of an interesting gathering last week . Upwards of Soo old people were entertained to a substantial meal b y the Freemasons of the town , and a subsequent musical and miscellaneous entertainment . The whole proceedings reflected the greatest credit on those who organised the treat and contributed so liberally to the fund . We hope to give a full report in our next .

Isaacs at the Mansion House , on Monday , for the purpose of suggesting the advisability of erecting a memorial to the late Lord Napier of Magdala , amongst those present being Bros . Admiral Lord Alcester , Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., and Alderman Sir Reginald

Hanson , Bart . On his lordship ' s advice , those present at once formed themselves into a committee , vvith power to add to their number , to carry out the proposal . What shape the memorial should take was left an open question for the present , but £ 1300 was at once subscribed towards its fulfilment . A vote of thanks to his lordship was cordially voted , and the proceedings then terminated .

I EMPERANCE IN THE ARMY . —The cause of temperance in the army will not be lost s ght of at the forthcoming Military Exhibition at Chelsea , vvhich will be opened next May . It is the intention of Messrs . Spiers and Pond , the refreshment contractors , to erect a handsome pavilion in the grounds in which , amid appropriate and ornamental surroundings , not only tea and coffee and a _ rated waters

will be sold , but all the temperance beverages which now compete for the favour of the public . This will be a most valuable experiment , and will , we may be sure , be watched with interest by the military authorities , who will be able to judge of the suitability of the various beverages

for sale in regimental canteens . Thus the temperance cause will be a gainer , and this establishment has an additional interest in view of the proposal made by Mr . Caine to bring before the notice of the House of Commons tbe good word done by Sir Frederick Roberts with regard to temperance among the troops in Hindostan .
