Masonic Notes .

The Quarterly General Court of the Girls' School will be held at the Freemasons' Tavern , to-morrow ( Saturday ) , at noon . There is nothing beyond the proposal for allowing the lodges and other Masonic bodies , which contributed to the Centenary Festival ,

being allowed to assist in decorating the Centenary Memorial Hall in a certain manner and on certain conditions . We have already explained the nature of this proposal , and need not say more about it now . The vacancies to be declared will be 21 , and the number of candidates 45 .

We must request our readers to bear in mind that the Quarterly General Court of the Boys' Schoolwill beheld in the large hall of the Freemasons' Tavern to-day ( Friday ) , at 4 p . m . —not at the hour of noon , as at the April and October Courts . We have already given a

full account of the business which will be brought under the consideration of the Governors and Subscribers , and we trust the proceedings will pass off quietly , and

without any of that display of violence which has more than once prevailed at these meetings , and which has considerably shaken the belief of a good many people in the virtues of Freemasonry .

The main question to be determined is the conditions on which Bro . Binckes shall retire from the office of Secretary , ( 0 which he vvas appointed in June , 1861 . As our readers will learn from letters vve publish elsewhere , the original pension of . £ 350 having been carried

at the October Court by a narrow majority , the Provisional Committee will recommend one of . £ 250 a year in substitution thereof . There are , however , so many who obiect to pensions altogether that the

Committee have given their sanction to a scheme for purchasing Bro . Binckes a life annuity of i . 250 , thus relieving the Institution of the burden of his pension . * * *

As for the changes in the laws relating to candidates for the Secretaryship and the occupant of that office , which will be proposed to-morrow ( Saturday ) , vve must point out that all such changes must be confirmed in

April before they can take effect . Therefore , unless it is intended to postpone the election of a new Secretary till after then , it is hardly worth while pressing them forward now . * * * That enthusiastic Knight ' Templar , Bro . T . B .

Whytehead , has made preliminary arrangements for the holding of the next chapter of the Ancient Ebor Preceptory on the nth March in the Merchants' Hall , York , which was the place of meeting of the Order 100 years ago . * * *

The Merchants' Hall , Fossgate , is the property of the ancient guild of Merchant Adventurers in York , and is an extremely old structure , possessing many features of great interest , and occupying the site of a still more ancient church or chapel . There are two

principal rooms , each measuring about 60 ft . by 20 ft ., and below the main floor is an ancient chapel built in 1411 . Particulars of this old building , in which also the Apollo Lodge meet , are g iven in Bro . Hughan ' s latest work .

It is intended to conduct the solemn ceremonies 01 the Order in these rooms and chapel , which are admirably adapted for the purpose , and the York fratres are anxious to see many visitors on such an historic occasion when the ritual of this Christian brotherhood will be exemplified in the fullest manner .

Where was the Janitor 'i A paragraph has been going the round of the press to the effect that , while one of the Royal Arch chapters at Chester was in conclave , a daring , more than ordinarily daring , thief made his way into the adjoining room , and carried off

about ^ 40 worth jewels and clothing . We not understand , however , how such a depredation was possible , if the Janitor vvas at his post , as usual , so as to keep off all intruders . Or , as they sometimes arrange matters curiously in provincial towns , was the

adjoining room on another floor—say the floor above or the one immediately below _> Or , did the Janitor post himself in another part of the building P One thing is clear . If the robbery was committed , the Janitor

must have been temporarily absent from his post , or he would have made mincemeat of half a dozen such sneaking intruders . * * *

It is vvith very great pleasure that vve hear thc Queen has granted from her Civil List a pension of , £ 50 a year for life to Bro . Dr . Sparks , borough organist of Leeds , who has rendered signal services to music generally , but especially in connection with the

Leeds Musical Festivals . Bro . Sparks is particularly well-known in Masonry by his " Liber Musicus , " which contains sound music , admirably suited to our various Masonic ceremonials . * * *

Considerable haziness seems to prevail in relation to the laws of the " Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , " and the election of a Secretary , whenever a vacancy may occur . Some brethren believe that only those can vote , on such occasion , who attend personally at thc

meeting convened for the purpose , while others consider that Life Subscribers will be eligible to record their preferences as well as Life Governors . The laws of the year 1886 provide as follows : "The election and removal of the Secretary shall be vested in the General

Committee ; \ J . e . ' all Life Governors—not being minors—also Twelve Life or annual Subscribers—who shall be Freemasons—elected annually at the Quarterly Court in April ; " ] the voting to be by balloting papers duly forwarded to each qualified member not less than

14 days before the date of election ; such balloting papers must be signed by the party entitled thereto , and may be presented by a member of the General Committee , on his or her behalf , at the time of the

election . " Clearly then the voting will be by proxy , all Life Governors , not being minors , whether ladies or gentlemen , are eligible to vote , the latter being Freemasons or otherwise , und Life Subscribers simply , will be excluded .

Our Lincoln brethren seem to be remarkabl y energetic just now . H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , the M . W . Grand Master , has been pleased to grant a warrant for a new lodge to be called the Ermine , No . 2351 ( to meet at the County Assembly Rooms ,

Lincoln ) , of which Bro . H . E . Cousans , P . P . G . W . Lincolnshire , is to be the first W . M ., and Bro . the Hon . Victor A . Pelham the Senior Warden . A petition is also being signed praying for a warrant for a Royal

Ark Mariner lodge , to be attached to the Remi g ius Lodge , No . 117 ( Mark ) , and Bro . H . E . Cousans , Grand Deacon of England , and P . P . G . W . ( Mark ) Lincolnshire , is to be the first Commander N .
