THE LANCASTER MASONIC CALENDAR FOR 1890 . This little calendar increases in interest annually , and the present issue for 1890 is by far the best of the series , so that Bro . H . Longman , the editor , deserves full credit for his handy little souvenir . The calendar portion is on similar lines to the preceding , as respects

the ordidary portion of the neat little annual , but other parts are considerably extended , and additional features add considerably to its usefulness , especially for local purposes . There are many towns which mig ht well follow Bro . Longman ' s example , and start a similar little book . The expense is light , and the

utility of such publications is so apparent that the wonder is there are so few as yet circulated , unless on behalf of the several Provincial Grand Lodges . Even as to these , in some parts of the country , they are more the exception than the rule , and yet for real use and reference nothing else can possibly supply information as these directories or calendars contain .

We fancy the editor of the Lancaster Calendar might supply the number of members subscribing to the several bodies represented in this compact little book , not , however , to the exclusion of other particulars now g iven , as none can be dispensed with . The local and Central Masonic Charities are carefully described by

Bro . Longman , and the centenary of the Lodge of Fortitude , 1889 , has a number of pages devoted to that celebration , which passed off so well . "A Funeral Service" and a stirring article on the " R . A ., Mark , and other Degrees " are additions of value , as also is " The Master . " " Remarkable Occurrences " appear for the first time , and the interesting " Masonic Notes "

are brought down to the end of last year . Dr . Rob Morris ' s poem , " New Year's Reflections , " is most appropriate , and altogether vve greet this wee book vvith more than ordinary pleasure vvith its increased attractions for iSqo .

MEN AND WOMEN OF THE DAY . The February number of the above will be specially acceptable to Masons , as it contains an excellent p hotograph , by Mr . Barraud , of our Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom , who has well been termed the handsomest member in the House of Lords . The part is further enriched by an equally good likeness ot Miss Agnes Huntington , the prima donna of the Prince

of Wales's Theatre . Professor Blackie is the other subject , and annexed is a good biography of each of the celebrities . The Archbishop of Canterbury , Miss Julia . Neilson , of the Haymarket Theatre , and Major General Grenfell , of Egyptian fame , are pourtrayed in Mr . Barraud ' s well-known stvle in last month ' s number .

and this month contains life-like portraits , specially taken , of his Eminence Cardinal Manning , the Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava , and Bro . Capt . Shaw , C . B . We venture to suggest that additional interest would ensue if facsimiles of the autographs of each subject vvere published .

HAZELL'S ANNUAL FOR 1890 . Since the date of its first issue , five years ago , Hazell's Annual has steadily increased in value as a handy reference book on topics of the day . The volume for 1890 presents the accustomed mass of

information , tersely put , aiid systematicall y arranged . Amongst other interesting features , there is an exhaustive account of the doings of the Parnell Commission , and an able article on our Navy and the manoeuvres of 1880 .

?! & 5 be voted tothe ' Bro . F . Binckes' Indemnity Fund . " 1 he name of a brother for joining having been handed in for election at the next meeting , the lodge was closed . The brethren and their visitors then adjourned to the banquet . U pon the removal of thc cloth the usual toasts received full justice .

In the course of his remarks he spoke of Bro . Altman's civic career . At the present time he vvas chairman of one of the large Corporation Committees , which , in itself , vvas a good proof of his at ention

and zeal to his public duties . In another lodge their W . M . had worked well and worthily , and , in concluding his speech , Bro . Binckes expressed a hope that Bro . Altman would long continue to be a member of the old Peace and Harmony Lodge . The Worshipful Master having replied , gave "The

There being no further business , the lodge vvas closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Holborn Restaurant , where an excellent uanquet vvas served in the Venetian Room . After the removal of the cloth , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and received .

Bro . Evans , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the W . M ., " said they were proud in having so distinguished a brother as their VV . M , He was initiated a year alter himself , and had passed the chair in another lodge , thus being twice VV . M . since 18 S 3 . The VV . M . thanked the brethren for the enthusiastic manner in which they had received the toast . He would

endeavour to do all in his power during his year of office to uphold the prestige of the Old Concord Lodge . The VV . M . next proposed " The Health of the I . P . M ., " which , he said , vvas a privilege he highly prized , he having been the first one for many years to install his successor . He had been the promoter of the Jubilee ball , which had enabled them to hand over a considerable sum to the

Benevolent Fund . He had thoroughly kept up the prestige of the lodge , having had during his year of office no less than 16 initiates . He had now to ask him to accept a jewel as a small token of the esteem in which he was held by every member of the lodge , and he trusted he might live long to wear it in remembrance of his year of office . Bro . Evans , I . P . M ., in reply said for the first time he felt

some diffidence in replying to the very flattering remarks which had been made by the W . M . He was proud to say that he had as much work during his year of office as any Master during the memory of any member of the lodge . He thanked his officers for the very able and efficient assistance they had rendered him , and would be most willing to render them any assistance when their term ot office

in the chair arrived . 'The handsome jewel which they had presented to him he should always wear vvith pride , and would ever keep fresh in his mind his year of office as VV . M . of the Old Concord Lodge . The VV . M . in felicitous terms proposed "The Health of the Visitors , " whom he said they were always very pleased to see , and he trusted they would allow him , as a special

privilege , to couple with that toast the name of his father , who had been for 25 years a member of that lodge . Bro . J . A . Fleck , in reply , said , it was a proud moment for him to see his eldest son installed into the chair of that lodge . He vvas sure he would do his best to fulfil those duties with honour to himself and credit to the lodge . Hc had always experienced great pleasure in attending the meetings of the lodge , but never so great as on the present

. Bro . G . King , in responding to the toast of "The Secretary and Treasurer , " said he hardly knew what fresh to say , so long as they appreciated their old Secretary , so long he should be pleased to fulfil those duties . 'The VV . M ., in proposing - "The Health of the Past Masters , " said no lodge had better Past Masters than they had ,

and he trusted they would continue to give them the benefit of their experience , as they had done in the past . Bro . W . 0 . Beazley , P . M ., replied in a few well-chosen remarks , 'The W . appointed Organist , for the splendid musical entertainmen t he had provided for them , which was quite a novel feature in the lodge , and one which they highly appreciated . Bro . C . ' W . S . Collins , in reply , thanked the VV . Master for the kind way in which he had spoken of him , and assured him that nothing should be wanting on his part to assist in rendering the ceremonies more impressive or enliven

the refreshment which followed labour . The Tyler's toast brought to a close one of the most successful meetings the lodge has had for many years . At the conclusion of the ceremonies uf installation and appointment of officers , and the delivery of the addresses , a handsome silver teapot , together with a gold bar to his Past Master ' s jewel , was presented to Bro . Hogard . The teapot bore the following' inscription : " Presented to VV . Bro . Charles Frederick Hogard , P . G . Std . Br ., P . M ., by the lodge of Israel , No . 205 , in

recognition of his untiring energy as Secretary during 12 years , and the valuable services rendered by him as W . M , ior the year ending 28 th January , 1 S 90 . " The presentation was accompanied by a speech from the W . M ., in which he extolled the services Bro . Hogard had rendered to the lodge , and Bro . Hogard , in acknowledging the presentation , expressed the gratification he always felt in doing whatever he

could on behalf of the Lodge of Israel . It vvas then announced that the W . M . was going to stand as Steward for the lodge at the forthcoming Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and the sum of 10 guineas vvas unanimously voted to be placed on his list . Notice of motion vvas given by Bro . C . F . Hogaid to vote the sum of £ 2 ios . to the Koyal Masonic Institution for Boys' Pension

Indemnity Fund . Lodge vvas shortly afterwards closed , and the usual grand banquet followed . The VV . M ., in proposing "The Deputy Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers , " and giving the names of Bros . Dr . Hogg , J . S . Eastes , J . Lewis Thomas , Magnus Ohren , F . Binckes , and C . F . Hogard , said that vvith such

an array of Past Grand Officers he was sure the toast would be received with the enthusiasm it so well deserved . Bro . Dr . Jabez Hogg , P . G . D ., regretted that he happened to be the Senior Grand Officer present who had to respond in the first place on account ot the prevailing illness which prevented others attending , and in the second place , because it reminded him that he was getting near to the bourn from

which even a Mason did not return . But his duty was lighter because the Lodge of Israel was so well acquainted with the Grand Officers and what they had done in the cause of Masonry . They had a grand example in Bro . Hogard , whose services they had recognised that night by a handsome presentation . Bro . Hogard vvas capable of performing any Masonic duties , and there vvas no man

more distinguished in the Craft . Bro . J . Lewis Thomas , who also responded , said it vvas to him personally the greatest pleasure in his Masonic career to come to the Lodge of Israel . He had been theie many years , and it gave him unbounded pleasure to witness how grandly thc lodge fulfilled the historic traditions it represented . Masons congratulated the lodge because they

dated from that magnificent temple of Masonry where Masonry first began , and the Lodge of Israel had been the most enthusiastic representatives of that olden and glorious time . The Grand Oilicers were glad to accept the hospitality of the lodge , which enabled them to see how nobly its members fulfilled all the tenets and principles of Freemasonry . Bro . C . F . Hogard , I . P . M ., in proposing " The W . M ., "

said it vvas just 20 years since Bro . M . I . Emanuel vvas first installed in the chair of the Lodge of Israel . He ( Bro . Hogard ) had had the distinguished honour of installing him for the second time that evening . In his early days Bro . Emanuel was a giant in strength who initiated many brethren in the lodge . The way he did his duty then vvas

an earnest of the way in which he would perform it now , and with these few words he would commend the toast to the brethren . The W . M ., in reply , said he would pledge himself once for ail to do his utmost during his year of office for the welfare and harmony of the lodge , and he trusted that when
