Masonic Presentation To The Deputy Mayor Of Colchester.
MASONIC PRESENTATION TO THE DEPUTY MAYOR OF COLCHESTER .
The monthly meeting of the Angel Lodge , No . 51 , was held at Colchester , on Thursday evening , the 23 rd ult ., when there was a large attendance of members and visitors . An interesting feature of the proceedings was the presentation to Bro . Claude E . Egerton-Green , P . P . G . Treas ., I . P . M ., Deputy Mayor of Colchester , of a memento of his year of office as W . M ., subscribed for by the members . This took the form of an 18-caratgold jewel of Past Provincial Grand Treasurer of Essex and an illuminated address .
The presentation was made by Bro . AUOLPHUS E . CHURCH , P . M ., P . P . J . G . W . ( Clerk of the Peace ) , in a happy speech . He said he presumed he had been selected for that pleasant duty osving to the fact that he was the senior Past Master now a member of the lodge , it having been 34 years since he occupied the chair , and all the brethren who were present on the occasion of his installation
had now passed away . Having recalled the fact that several members of the Angel Lodge had been Mayor of the borough , mentioning Bros . S . Chaplin , Thomas Moy , and the present Mayor , Bro . James Wicks ( the two Utter of which he was glad to see present ) , Bro . Church said that he doubted if any lodge in the country could boast of having both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor as members . As regards their I . P . M ., it was well known that shortly after his installation as
W . M . he was elected Mayor of the borough , and it was feared that the innumerable duties which that oflice demanded would prevent his giving attention to those of the lodge , but , so far from that having been the case , Bro . Egerton-Green had thrown the greatest possible energy into his Masonic duties , with the result that lhe year had been one of the most successful experienced by the lodge . After humorously expressing regret that the members had not hid the
opportunity of presenting him with a silver cradle during his year of office , Bro . Church said the brethren had felt that they should like to present him with some little memento , and , therefore , asked him to accept the jewel of a Past Provincial Grand Treasurer and the illuminated and framed address ; and all he could add was—God bless him , and may he long live to look upon those evidences of the good feeling of the brethren of the lodge .
BMLCLAUDE EGERTON-GREEN , who had been taken completely by surprise , was loudly cheered on rising to acknowledge the gift . He thanked Bro . Church , for the kind way in which he had spoken , and the brethren for the beautiful gilts ' « ey had made him , which would be always looked on by him as amongst his most cherished possessions . He felt a great interest in Freemasonry , and was glad that the experience he had gained as first Master of the Colne Lodge had stood him in such good stead as W . M . of the mother lodge of the province .
Both the jewel and illuminated address were greatly admired . The address was as follows ; ,, „ " P £ , esented t 0 W . Bro . Claude E . Egerton-Green , I . P . M . 51 , P .
