The Approaching Festival Of The Royal Masonic Institution For Girls.

THE APPROACHING FESTIVAL OF THE ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS .

It is most desirable that we should call the attention ol our readers to thc very near approach of this important annual fixture . Thc 109 t h Anniversary Festival ol the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls will take place at Freemasons' Tavern on

Wednesday , the 1 Uh instant , under the auspices of Bro . the Ri g ht Hon . Lord Ll . ANGATTOCK , Prov . Grand Master of South Wales ( Eastern Division ) . As regards thc claims of the Institution upon the generous support of English Freemasons , they arc

so well known as hardl y to need recapitulating . Still , as the prospects for the 12 th instant arc not of the most hopeful character , it may perhaps he as well if we point out , firstly , that some 270 children , thc daughters of deceased or indigent

brethren , arc maintained , clothed , and educated at the cost of this Charity ; . secondly , that its affairs are admirably and , at ( he same time , economically administered b y a Mouse Committee of some of thc ablest and most influential members of the English

Craft ; and , lastl y , that the Head Governess and her stall acquit themselves so well in the discharge of their duties , that it is onl y now and then that a girl or g irls fail to pass the several public examinations for which they arc entered . It is also

necessary wc should remind our readers that the School is mainl y dependent for its means of subsistence on the voluntary contributions of the Craft and their friends . The permanent income , all told , amounts to about , £ 2250 , the annual

expenditure is between , £ 13 , 000 and , £ 14 , 000 . There is therefore a deficiency to be made good annually amounting to from £ 11 , 000 to £ 12 , 000 , and the one source from which it can hope to obtain this sum is the annual Festival . During

the last three years this source has yielded good fruit abundantly , but neverthless the totals have exhibited a downward tendency . In 1 S 94 , the total of the donations and subscriptions when Bro . Lord SKKl . MERSDAI . E presided for his

father , Bro . thc Karl of LATHOM , was £ 18 , 05 6 ; in 1 S 95 , under the presidency of Bro . the Earl of M 01 / NT EDGC'DANSE , then Dep . G . M ., it dropped to £ r 6 , oj 6 ; and last year , when Bro . the Earl of YARBOROUGH occupied thc chair , it reached £ 15 , 412 .

In each of these years the result was eminently satisfactory , the amounts obtained being in each case in excess of the sum required , so that the authorities in charge of the Institution were enabled to increase their limited stock of invested capital and thereb y permanentl y augment thc permanent income . But ,

The Approaching Festival Of The Royal Masonic Institution For Girls.

as wc have said , there was exhibited during this period a downward tendency , and the question which confronts us at the moment is—Will that downward tendency be continued ? It looks very much as if it would . Last year , when the smallest

of the three totals was obtained , the Board of Stewards , consisting of 404 ladies and brethren , was , numerically , thc strongest ever known , except in thc year of the School Centenary . But this year ' s Board , so far as it has been constituted up to thc

present time , is between So and 90 short of that number , and between now and the 12 th instant there is not much likelihood of any appreciable addition being made to its present number , while those who do give in ( heir names will for Ihe

most part be Unattached and content themselves with making their personal donations . Moreover , the " Chairman ' s Province , " though loyal to the backbone to this and our other Institutions , and a consistent supporter of ( hem all in I urn , is b y no means stronc . It will do what it can both for the sake ol

the School and out of respect for its chief , but we must not look to it for a contribution such as its stronger and wealthier sister provinces would be in a position Io make . We realise that then ; are diflieullies in the way of a very formidable total such as was

raised in 1 S 94 . Every charitable institution in ( he country is earnestly appealing to its supporters for a larger amount of hel p in order that it may be enabled to commemorate in some wav or other the Queen ' s Diamond Jubilee . But it is just this very

auspicious event , which the . whole country , or rather the whole British Empire , is on the eve of celebrating that should furnish the brethren with an inducement Io be more generous still than they have been in other and less eventful years . Let them put their shoulders to the wheel and no matter what ( he streiu'lh of the

Board of Stewards may be for the approaching Girls' School Festival , let them swell their donations and subscriptions to Diamond Jubilee point , and we feel sure ! hev will have no reason to regret it . Certain are we that whatever the brethren may give will be thankfull y received and faithfully applied .
