( b ) Duke Frederick of Brunswick , born 1 740 , died 1 S 05 , distinguished himself in the Seven Years' War , and subsequently commanded in Holland . It is not known when he was made a Alason , but in 176 9 he joined a chapter of the Strict Observance . !

He remained National Grand Alaster from 1772 to I 7 yt ) . In 1773 he made an unsuccessful attempt to reconcile the Strict Observance and the Zinnendorf system . He is said to have devoted himself during the closing years of his life to the study of the occult sciences . ;

(< - ) T . Smith Webb , born I 77 i , died 1 S 19 , vvas Grand Grand Alaster of Rhode Island in 1 S 13 , and one of the most prominent of our American biethren . that he might prosecute his studies . About 1 O 04 he vvas invited from Italy to Denmark , where he is said to have been commissioned b y Christian IV . to prepare designs for part of the buildings of the royal chateau at Frederiksborg and the Palace of Rosenberg . To this , no doubt .

he owes his introduction to our . James I ., Christian IV . ' s brother-in-law . On his second return from Italy he set about erecting the Palace of Whitehall , of which the Banqueting Hall alone was completed and still exists . St . NOT K S—continued . Alaster of the Scottish lodges , and at the Wilhelmsbad Covention , in 17 S 2 , General G . Alaster of the assembled lodges . (//) Mississippi . On 1 st April , 1881 , there were 29 S lodges on the roll of this G . Lodge , while the membership fell somewhat short of 0500 .

(/) Baroness Burdett Coutts , daughter of the late Sir Francis Burdett , some time member of Parliament for the City of Westmister , and cousin of Bro . Sir Francis Burdett , Bart ., Prov . G . Al . Middx . On more than one occasion has this benevolent lady evinced her interest in the proceedings of the Craft generally , and of the lodge which bears

her name in particular . At its consecration she presented it with a copy of the Bible ; and , on the occasion here noted , the Grand Master having granted the necessary dispensation , the Baroness was personally present during the session of the lodge—though it will be understood no Alasonic work was done—and the chairs were formally inaugurated .

( j ) Henry Price , born in England in 16 97 , whence he emigrated to N . America . He was merchant tailor in Boston , and died at Townsend , Alass ., in 1780 . Though the Daniel Coxe deputation , granted by Grand Alaster the Duke of Norfolk , preceded by three years that issued by Grand Master Viscount Alontague to Bro . Henry Price , and

though contemporary journals show that brethren were in the habit of meeting at Philadelphia in 1732 , yet our American brethren owe the first lodge which is known to have been established on their soil to the labours of Bro . Price . The petition forsuch lodge vvas approved at this very meeting , after the Prov . G . Lodge , as stated , had been constituted .

( 7 c ) Mariyand . — There are in this jurisdiction , according to the latest returns we have seen , close on 4800 brethren . The Grand Lodge appears , from the same sources to be in debt to the extent of little short of 300 , 000 dollars .

(/) G . Kloss , born 1788 , died 1854 , vvas initiated into Freemasonry in 1 S 05 , and thenceforward devoted himself heart and soul to Alasonic literature , and especially to that branch of it which comes under the head of Masonic bibliography . He is author of "Die Freimaurerei in ihrre wahren

Bedeutung , 1 S 46 , " "Geschichte der Freimaurerei in England , Irland , and Schottland , 1 S 47 , " and "Geschichte der Freimaurerei in Frankreich , " iS $ 2 ; but his principal work , and that by which he will be bast remembered is , undoubtedly , " Die Bibliographic der Freimaurer , " 1844 , which , as is

stated in Kenning ' s " Cyclopaedia of Freemasonry , " " is a most excellent work alike for research and correctness . " The highest encomiums have been passed upon this most distinguished brother . He vvas repeatedly Chairman or W . Alaster of the lodge " zur Einigkeit , " of

Frankfort-on-Maine . " His lectures , " says Bro . Meisenger , " chiefly historical , were most attractive and enlivening ; his deep reading , sagacious reasoning , and practical good sense preeminently qualified him to manage the administration , and to give laws . " i « same brother describes him as " worthy ot

great praise for the manner in which he reorganised the Eclectic Grand Lodge , ot which he vvas at different times Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master , and this in periods of peculiar difficulty . "

( in ) The Sussex Wing of Roy al Free Hospital , Gray ' s-inn-road , was erected at the cost of the Craft for thepurpose of petpetuating the memory of H-K . ri ; the Duke of Sussex , Grand Master ot ACasons in England 1813-1843 .
