HOUSE COMMITTEE OF THE GIRLS' SCHOOL . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " D ear Sir and Brother , — Bro . Tattershall who , I believe , is one of the oldest members of the House Committee , has given notice of a motion for the next Quarterly Court , the object of which

is to render ineligible for re-election one-third of the House Committee , all of whom , under the existing rules , retire annually , but are eligible for re-election . Whether the governing body of the Institution will sec fit to deprive themselves of the right to elect those whom they may deem best fitted to undertake the management of

the School , I will not venture to discuss . My object rather has reference to the reasons assigned by Bro . Tattershall for the step he has seen fit to take . His justification is " that it has been remarked to him that the House Committee is a close borough . " What he understands by such an expression he will have an

opportunity to explain when his motion is discussed . I fully concur in the opinions I have not unfrequently heard expressed , as to the desirableness of introducing new blood from time to time into the managing body of every institution ; and if , under the existing rules of the Girls ' School such infusion of new blood had been excluded , I should

feel disposed to support some good proposal as that embodied in Bro . Tattershall's motion . But so far from such being the case , Bro . Tattersha " must be perfectly well aware that during the past four years no less than eight new members have been elected on the

Committee—„ o ( Bro . Mather , Vice-Prestdent . 1 7 i Bro . Letchworth , Vice-Patron . C Bro . E . Cox , Vice-Patron . IS 79-J Bro . F . Richardson , Vice-Patron . ( . Bro . Dr . Hope , Honorary Physician . 18 S 0—Bro . Hammerton , Vice-Patron .

, oc „ f Bro . R . Grey , Vice-Patron . , t > s -l Bro . J . H . Matthews , Vice-President . And Bro . Tattershall cannot be ignorant of the fact that since the years 1 S 73-74 the governing body of the School have been called upon to fill up no less than fifteen vacancies on the House Committee , caused by the deaths or

retirement of the following brethren : Bros . Browse , G . Cox , Lieut .-Col . Creaton , Benjamin Head , VV . Paas , D . Rolls , R . VV . Stewart , White , VV . Ramsey , Sir F . Burdett , E . Cox , Rev . M . Vaughan , J . Boyd , Griffiths , Smith , and VV . Hope .

In view of these facts , of which many of your readers may not be aware , I am curious to learn what are really the grounds on which Bro Tattershall asks the Governors to alter rules under which the management of the School has hitherto worked so well . Yours fraternally , A LIFE PATRON .

THE LODGE OF BENEVOLENCE . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — In answer to Bro . Nunn ' s note I did not say the actual sum voted was £ 400 , but it was near enough for my purpose ; nor did I assert that" the money vvas voted on

the understanding that it should be repaid ; " but it was a reason given al the time why so large a sum should be voted to the brother . The admissions made by Bro . Nunn , and his advocacy of the practice , prove the correctness of . my note , so that your " quite certain , " and your " mistake " are quite out

of place in the face of a fact . I am , Sir and Brother , 23 L . [ We do not agree with our correspondent , and venture to think him altogether out in his statement . Brethren should really be particular when they send what they term " facts . " Bro . Nunn ' s correction was most seasonable . — ED . FMA

THE ANCIENT AND ACCEPTED RITE—A QUERY . To the Editor of the " Freemason " Dear Sir and Brother , — Referring to a question put to you by Bro . VV . I " . Lainonby , in your issue of the 24 th ult ., I have to state that no such body as a " Supreme Council for the Valley of New Zealand" was ever recognised by the Supreme

Council , 33 , for England . It is true that there vvas a body in New Zealand claiming the above title , but the Supreme Council for England would not recognise it , as it was held to be illegally formed ; and , as two out of its four chapters , together with its leading brethren , have lately placed themselves under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Council , it is probably no longer in existence .

retirement of the following brethren : Bros .
