Masonic Notes.

Scurrah had not only been the Installing Master , but he had been a father to him in Masonry , and without Bro . Scurrah ' s aid he would not have been VV . M . of the Henry Levander Lodge . With regard to the I . P . M . he must say he vvas a hard-working Mason . Unfortunately he had not had many initiates or a great deal of work during his year , but what he had had to do he had done well . As to Bro .

Axford he , in his year , did a great amount of work and was a great benefit to the Henry Levander Lodge ; he introduced several initiates and had a successful year of office . Bro . W . A . Scurrah , who vvas received vvith loud applause , replying * said little did he think six years ago when he initiated the W . M . that the time would so shortly arrive

when he would sit under his gavel . Nobody in the room could perhaps understand wholly the pleasure he experienced that night in installing his nephew ; it vvas not because the W . M . vvas initiated in the lodge , or because he vvas his nephew , but because the W . M . had from the time he vvas initiated acted as a Mason , and all his transactions in life were carried out according to Masonic line and rule .

For that threefold reason he was rejoiced and delighted to install Bro . Arthur Henry Scurrah . If the W . M . carried out the work of the lodge as he hoped and expected he would , he would gain the respect and esteem of all good Masons , and have the satisfaction of knowing that his Masonic good qualities vvere recognised by every one who knew him . It was a sincere pleasure to him to see so many

good and true brethren in the room . When he vvas installed in the lodge it vvas said by a great number of friends that they never attended so large , so influential , and so good a meeting , and from that time there had not been so great a gathering till that night . The LP . M . unfortunately had a depressing time . The Secretary , one of the founders , Bro . McKay , and then Bro . Reece , an esteemed young man , vvere

cut off , and after him Bro . Philip Cheek , one of the founders and a Past Master ot the lodge . He trusted , however , Bro . Arthur Scurrah would have a brighter year . The brethren had seen his work , they had seen the officers he had appointed , and they knew they would uphold the dignity of the lodge . They would bring only good men into the lodge . As long as life was spared to him he would never desert

the Henry Levander Lodge . He would always attempt to do his duty as he had in the past , and endeavour to keep up that lodge as one of vvhich the Province of Middlesex might by proud . Bro . Harry Webb , I . P . M ., also replied . He had had an unfortunate year in the shape of losing a Past Master and officer , but he hoped that during the present Master ' s year they would be more fortunate .

Bro . Vansittart , in replying to the toast of " The Initiate , " said he much appreciated the welcome the brethren had given him . There vvas only one regret he had , that he had not become one of the brethren some years since , but he hoped to be with them many years . He could not say much now , but after he had been in the Order a longer time he might be able to say more .

Bro . W . G . Fenn , Addiscombe Lodge , one of the respondents to the toast of " The Visitors , " said it vvas his happy privilege to see the W . M . initiated six or seven years ago , and he then thought from the interest Bro . Arthur Scurrah took in the ceremony that he would in due time become W . M ., though he did not think he would get the position so soon . He congratulated him on his installation , and he

had no doubt he would make the lodge as successful as it vvas in its early days . On one occasion there vvere five initiates , four or live passings , and six or seven raisings , and the brethren did not sit down to dinner till about seven o ' clock . He vvas sure the W . M . would bear out the traditions of the past in the future . Dr . Powdrell said the admirable way in vvhich the W . M .

had as a young man and a young Mason taken his position vvas most creditable . The I . P . M . also had acted in a most creditable manner . The lodge had passed through a year of dire calamity , but he hoped it would arrive at a position of thoroughly good success . He vvas sure the officers vvere good , and would prove that they vvere capable of taking the chair .

Bro . Nottingham said the VV . M . and his uncle vvere great personal friends of his , and he vvas very pleased to meet them both in lodge . Bro . W . A . Scurrah , responding to the toast of "The Treasurer ancl Secretary and Officers of the Lodge , " said he vvas sorry Bros . Terry and McLeod had been obliged to l eave > as ^ ey would have responded to the toast of "The Masonic Charities . " Charity was the most glorious thing

connected with Freemasonry . He acted as Steward for the lodge for the Boys' School , when nearly £ 30 , 000 was collected . That showed vvhat was the feeling that animated the brethren . He hoped the calls upon them would be responded to as heartily in the future . They would have an opportunity afforded them next jear , when the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution would celebrate the jubilee of _ its foundation . The Tyler ' s toast closed a most successful and eniovable evening .

LANCASTER . Duke of Lancaster Lodge ( No . 1353 ) — ihe annual installation meeting of the above lodge was ? , d . |' Wednesday evening , the 15 th ult ., in the Masonic Hall , Church-street , amongst those present being Bros . B . Hamer , Tyler . A cordial vote of thanks vvas passed by acclamation to Bro . Oglethorpe for his services as Installing Officer , on the motion of Bro . Acton , seconded by Bro . Morge . Bro . Oglethorpe , in acknowledging the compliment , spoke of the pleasure vvhich he had experienced in going through the ceremony , and vvas pleased if his services had met with their appreciation . It vvas always a source of

pleasure to him to be of any service to the lodge . In concluding he presented to Bro . Morge , on behalf of the members of the lodge , a gold Past Master's jewel as some slight recognition of the manner in vvhich he had carried out the duties of his office . During the whole of the _ time Bro . Morge had been going through the various chairs of the lodge , he had been regular and punctual in attendance ,

and was also most efficient in the various duties vvhich he had had to perform , and a proof of vvhich they had had in the very satisfactory way in vvhich he carried out the working of the Third Degree that evening . On behalf of the members he had much pleasure in presenting that Past Master's jewel to him , and hoped he would be spared for many years to further the cause of Masonry . Bro . Morge , in acknowledging the presentation , thanked

the members for their kindness to him , though he did not need such an incentive as that to urge him on in doing vvhat he could in the- cause of Freemasonry . His heart vvas in it , and the more he saw of it the more he approved and admired it . It would , he hoped , always be his desire , so long as he had health and strength given him , to do vvhat he could for the benefit of his lodge . The remaining routine business vvas then gone through , and the lodge vvas closed .

The Past Master ' s jewel had the following inscription engraved on the reverse : " Presented to Bro . G . A . Morge , P . M ., by the members of the Duke of Lancaster Lodge , as a mark of esteem . July 15 th , iS < ji . " The installation banquet and ' picnic took place at the house of Bro . Higgins , the Wheat Sheaf Hotel ,

Beetham , to vvhich place several of the brethren , with their wives and friends proceeded by coach , the drive ot about 12 miles through a rural district being much enjoyed . Bro . Price , the newly-elected Master , presided at the banquet , and the usual Masonic toasts vvere given and responded to . The jewel vvas manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

NEWTOWN . Cedewain Lodge ( No . I 594 ) .-The anniversary festival of the above lodge vvas held on the 16 th ult . at the Masonic Temple , Milford-road . The lodge vvas opened by Bro . R . Jones . Bro . Dawson efficiently performed the ceremony of passing Bro . Watkin . After this the installation of Bro . R . James took place , Bro . Dainly , P . S . G . W .,

acting as Installing Master . The musical portions of the service ( for vvhich Bros . T . Monk Taylor , J . and E . Owen , W . Francis , and H . Chapman , Org ., were responsible ) passed off well , and were highly spoken of by the visiting brethren . The following officers were appointed : Bros . Milnes , S . W . ; Balfour Fergusson , J . Amongst the visitors vve noticed Bros . Lewis Andrews , VV . M ., John Owen , P . M ., Ed . Owen , and Williams , all of 99 8 ; and others . Not only was the ceremony bright and cheerful , but the lodge room also presented a very

attractive and luxurious appearance , having been furnished with handsome curtains ( the gift of Bro . Buckley ) , and neatly decorated vvith appropriate Masonic devices and banners . The banquet vvas partaken of at the Public Hall , the caterer being Mr . Bebb . A capital selection of glees and songs vvas exceedingly well rendered by Bros . T . M . Taylor , I . and E . Owen , VV .

Francis , D . D . 1 lere , and Lewis Andrews . The toast list contained the usual items peculiar to Masonic gatherings . The toast of the evening , "The Health of the new VV . M ., " given by the I . account of his installation , but in addition it vvas his birthday and silver wedding day- as well , he was greeted vvith quite an ovation of cheers and congratulations . The financial position ot the lodge is satisfactory , and the officers and brethren of the Cedewain Lodge may soon be congratulated upon being the proud owners of their Temple and grounds .
