In a paragraph in our last issue , referring to the annual meeting of "Ye Antiente Fraternite of ye Rahere Almoners , " sve mentioned Bro . James Stevens as the Secretary . This is an error , as Mr . Thomas Sangster holds theofficeof Grand Recorderof theabovecharitableinstitution , svhich is equivalent to that of Secretary . Bro . Stevens is the founder .
Bro . Lord Waveney , Prov . G . M . Warsvickshire , on Tuesday opened , amidst much rejoicing , a handsome nesv public hall , piesented by Mr . D . Gurteen , J . P ., at Haverhill , near Cambridge , a distinguished company being present . the Gresham Sunday School Floral Society , Brixton . In the Constitution of many Grand Lodges it is provided that all past elective Grand Officers shall become permanent members of their respective Grand Lodges . It has been found necessary in some localities to add another clause declaring that such permanent membership is dissolved by non-affiliation . A Mason svho does not care to
retain his connection with a Subordinate Lodge can hardly expect to hold on to the rights and privileges of membership in the Grand Body . —Freemasons' Repository . Our osvn Postmaster-General's system of postal notes , as distinguished from Post-office orders , after being adopted in France , has nosv been brought into use by the United States Post-office . In form , the nesv American
notes , hosvever , are slightly different from those issued here . They arc bound in books of 500 each , each one being perforated , and , instead of the value being printed on each one , as in our case , the postmaster has at the time of purchase to Ull up each one , with its counterpart , for any required amount not exceeding five dollars . The system appears to us to be not so handy as our osvn , and to leave
open greater facilities for fraud . Bro . Sir J . Devereux , of Windsor , on svhom the Queen recently conferred the honour of Knighthood , is not only a leading member of the Windsor municipality , but likesvise a distinguished Berks Mason , having been VV . M . of the Windsor Castle Lodge , No . 771 , in 1 S 60 , and Prov . Grand Secretary of Berks and Bucks for several years , and

St . Austell on Tuesday there svill be considerable business to transact , in addition to that which usually falls to be considered at such times , there being a candidate seeking election as an annuitant for the " Cornwall Masonic Annuity and Benevolent Fund , " and several petitioners for relief from the funds . It is likely that the several changes made in thc Book of Constitutions svill be duly noted , and in
other svays the assembly svill be one of more than ordinary interest . It is confidently expected that Bro . the Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe , the Provincial Grand Master , svill also preside at the banquet , so that arrangements are being made on a scale suitable to the occasion by the zealous St . Austell brethren . The last meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge in that tosvn svas held on July gth , 1872 , when
there were 24 lodges and about 1100 members ; now there are 29 lodges and some 1500 subscribing brethren in the provinces . Speaking of the funeral of thc late Bro . Capt . Webb , the Buffalo Express , after describing the burial place , says * . "No one svas present to do his memory honour . There svere no tears shed by loving friends , no regrets by friendly neighbours , as the remains svere lowered

It was a sad picture , doubly pathetic when the life and deeds of daring of this champion are considered—a man for whom half of England and more than that of the United States is mourning . There was no shroud , no clothing to hide his bloated form . In the same rough pine-box in svhich the body was shipped from Lewiston to the Falls , the greatest swimmer in the svorld svas

Maidwell ' s , Hercules Tavern , Leadenhall-street , on Wednesday next , at seven o ' clock . Brethren are earnestly invited .
The United States Government has just purchased the property of Wakefield , Westmorland County , Virginia , svhere George Washington was born . It is about 86 miles from Washington city , is 20 acres in extent , and is a portion of the property osvned by Washington's grandfather . Congress has , moreover , voted 33 , 000 dollars to erect a monument upon the spot svhere the " Father of his Country " svas born .
Bro . Sir P . Dyke Ackland , Bart ., svho has represented North Devon continuously since 1865 , and , svho on Thursday last svas ssvorn a member of the Privy Council , svas initiated in Apollo University Lodge , No . 357 , then No . 711 , Oxford , in 1 S 30 , the Duke , then Marquis , of Abercorn , Grand Master of Ireland , and Lord de Tabley , Prov . G . Master of Cheshire , having been initiated in the same lodge in thc course of the same year .
Bro . Geo . Lambert , F . S . A ., Member of the Court of Assistants of the Goldsmiths Company , P . G . Swd . Br ., read a very erudite and exceedingly interesting paper on St . Dunstan , the patron saint of the above Company , before the meeting of the British Archasological Society at Dover , on the 23 rd ult . Osving to pressure on our space sve are unable now to print the address . On the occasion of the visit of the society to Canterbury on
the same day , Bro . Lambert , at the Guildhall , gave a short description of thc regalia of the borough . An illiterate man having been convicted at the United States District Court in Missouri of a minor offence , he svas ordered by the judge to be detained in goal until he should be able to read and svrite ; and another offender , less ignorant , svas sentenced to be similarly imprisoned until he should have instructed the former in those valuable arts .
It is stated that in three sveeks the man reappeared able to svrite fairly well from dictation , and both pupil and master were discharged . A correspondent writes : " I notice in your impression of the iSth August , under heading 'Masonic and General Tidings , ' an extract taken from the Keystone , as follosvs : ' Bro . Sir Archibald Allison , svho is an enthusiastic Mason , and has held the office of Provincial Grand Master
of the Province of Glasgosv , ' & c . As this is apt to mislead those not svell versed in the history of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgosv , I beg to inform you that the present Sir Archibald never svas Provincial Grand Master of this province , but his father , the late Sheriff Allison , the author of ' Allison ' s History of Europe , ' svas the occupant of that office for some years . " Full - sized figures in Carrara marble of the
Queen and the Prince of Wales , and an allegorical representation of , Nesv South VVales , are being prepared by Signor Fontana , and are intended to grace the halls of the Government offices at Sydney . The principal statue in order of precedence is that of her Majesty , svearing her crosvn and the royal and imperial robes of State . The Prince of Wales is represented in the uniform of a field marshal , his left hand resting on the hilt of his ssvord .
his right holding the marshal ' s baton . In the third statue the sculptor presents us svith a female figure in the full bloom of youthful maturity , classically dressed , and crowned svith a garland of the Australian flora . On the plinth at her feet lies recumbent a young ram in all thc native glory of a curly fleece of wool , and on the opposite side the mineral svealth of Australia is typified by a large nugget . The statues are each 6 ft . 6 in . in height , and have been
skillfully finished . The follosving story serves to illustrate the influence of certain Army Regulations upon the humorous fancy . An officer submitted a claim for reimbursement of travelling expenses , under the very ordinary head of " porter . " The item svas disallosvcd , and he svas referred to the Regulation whicii prohibits any claim being preferred under like circumstances for refreshments . He explained that the porter
was not a fluid , but a man ; but was again referred to the Regulations , svhere he ultimately discovered that the proper term for animal porter was " porterage . " He mentally registered the information , but to keep himself right for the future , and to avoid the laborious investigation which he had been compelled to make , begged to be informed svhether the Regulation term for cab svas " cabbage . " The story ceases here ; "but , " says the Broad to svhom indebted for the if the

" The follosving illustration of American Masonic amenities svill be read svith a melancholy interest by all brethren . We take it from the New York Dispatch— " Loving Sympathy . —We hear svith infinite sorrosv tbat there has come to the family of our esteemed
Grand Commander , John S . Bartlett , the unsvelcome dispensation of the loss by death of his only son , Lloyd G . But the Lord has otherwise ordered , and we must bosv to the direction sve cannot resist . The remains were buried at Etmira , where Sir fohn svas so long a
