THEALEXANDRIACIGARETTECO.'S NEW BRAND . DRAGOUMIS. PREPARED OF THE PUREST TURKISH TOBACCOS . The highest classes of tobacco , however , are converted into the well-known " Dragoumis , " for whicli the Alexandria Cigarette Company have gained a deservedly high reputation , and we have no hesitation in saying , after a practical test so far as our taste and judgment permit , that they are superior to any we have yet tried , either imported or otherwise . — Whitehall Review . CALENDAR OF THE GREAT PRIORY OF THE TEMPLE AND MALTA IN ENGLAND AND WALES , 1888-9 . This annual and familiar calendar to the Fratres of the Temple , cannot fail to prove most useful , for the neatly got-up pamphlet contains . most interesting matter . The proceedings of the Great Priory held on May nth , iSSS ,
presided over by Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , are given at length , and are of more than ordinary value , as the report of the Council was in favour of authorising Centenary jewels to be worn by the members of any preceptories which shall have established to the satisfaction of the Council that it has had a continuous existence for at least 100 years . This suggestion was agreed to , provided
the pattern of such commemorative jewel shall be approved by the Council , and the fee of three " guineas be paid for a warrant . This action was the result of an application made by the Jerusalem Preceptory , Manchester , that such a distinction should be permitted its members , and as the evidence on its behalf was conclusive ( having been chartered by the Grand Lodge of all England , held at York on
the 16 th October , 17 S 6 , and subsequently confirmed by Bro . Thomas Dunckerley , G . M ., 20 th May , 1795 ) the premier Centenary warrant was granted this Body . The receipts for the year amounted to £ 803 5 s . nd ., being £ 166 4 s . 6 d . for the Benevolent Fund , and £ 637 is . $ d . for the General Fund , the sums of £ 102 12 s . gd . and £ 120 12 s . 2 d . respectively , representing the amounts to
begin the year with . The expenditures have been £ 30 from the Benevolent , and £ 757 13 s . 7 d . from the General , so that the balance of the latter has been reduced , whilst the former has been considerably increased . _ There are 108 active preceptories under the Great Priory , 15 have been struck off the roll , by order of that Body , on 1 st January last , and 15 are still under suspension for default
in forwarding the Annual Returns . Twelve are noted in default for one year , but they are included in our total of 108 , this notice being a warning rather than a sentence of suspension . The Vice-Chancellor ( Bro . W . Tinkler , K . C . T . ) does his work well , as this annual testifies , for everything in his office appears to go on " smooth as a glove , " and we beg to congratulate him accordingly .

John Lane's paper thereon , has given rise to one or two difficult points , which , even yet , have not been elucidated . We do not meet with the term , from any List , prior to the fourth decade of the last century , and according to my researches , none of such meetings could possibly date before the advent of the premier Grand Lodge . In Bro .
Ireland governing bodies had for some little time been in active operation . The Scotts' Degree or Degrees , so fully described by Bro . Gould in his History , do not come on the scene until about 1 740 . We meet with the designation at Salisbury , as respects England , in 1746 . Relative to the " Masters' Lodges , " the Degree known as the "Third " can be traced , by actual records or notes , back
to A . D . 1724-5 , but lodge minutes are not plentiful respecting such meetings until much later in the last century . When at Hull , in July , I had the pleasure of going through a number of valuable minute-books exhibited to me by the careful custodian , Bro . W . Tesseyman , whose veneration for old documents is well known to his many friends . Bro . G . L . Shackles and Bro . William Watson
were also with me , so we had quite a forage and a Masonic treat , as Students . One of the volumes interested me exceedingly , being the first minute-book of the "Apollo " Lodge , warranted at York , 31 July , 1773 , and removed to Hull in 1817 , but unfortunately erased in 1836 ( vide Lane's Masonic Records , p . 130 ) . In it I read , " A Masters' Lodge 3 August 1773 , " and find that " Richd . Barnes was proposed
to be made a Mason , was ballotted for and admitted , and chose one of the Tylers . " And at same meeting "James Jackman was also proposed , ballotted for and both admitted to the two first Degrees of Masonry . " Also on the 18 th August , 1773 , a candidate was " Admitted and raised . " This is the first instance I have met with of the first two

KEIGHLEY .-Royal Yorkshire Lodge ( No . 265 ) . —On Thursday evening , the 23 rd ult ., this lodge held an emergency meeting in the Masonic Hall , for the purpose of celebrating the centenary of the lodge ' s existence , the warrant being dated 23 rd August , 1788 . At the election of Worshipful Master in December last , it was decided to invite the Past Masters of the lodge to be the officers during the centenary year , and this suggestion was acted upon , so that every regular officer of the lodge this year , even to the Outer Guard , has served the office of W . M .
The meeting on Thursday , the 23 rd ult ., was presided over by the W . M ., Bro . E . Lee , P . M . 408 , P . P . G . Std . Br ., and he was supported by all his officers and a large array of Past Masters , among whom we were very glad to notice Bro . Maud Scott , P . M ., a very old Mason , who has twice filled the office of W . M . of the lodge , the first time being about 30 years ago , and other brethren , numbering
nearly 40 , including Bro . J . W . Monckman , P . M . 1018 , P . P . G . D . C , and other visitors . The lodge was opened by the W . M ., after which he proceeded to explain the tracing board and the lecture in the First Degree , and also gave an admirable exposition of the principles of Freemasonry and the teachings they inculcate , all of which were very attentively listened to by the
brethren present . The Worshipful Master then called upon Bro . the Rev . J . Room , B . A ., Chaplain of the lodge , and P . Prov . G . Chap . W . Yorks , who gave a very interesting and eloquent address on the Three Grand Principles of Masonry , viz ., Brotherly Love , Relief , and Truth , and dwelt most ably on the moral teachings of Masonry , and the benefits to be derived by every brother acting up to
and practising those teachings . The W . M . and Bro . Room were both loudly applauded on resuming their seats , and , on the motion of Bro . Naylor , P . M ., S . W ., seconded by Bro . J . H . Roper , P . M ., J . D ., the best thanks of the lodge were given to them for their excellent and instructive addresses , to which the W . M . and Bro . Room suitably responded . Bro . Harrison , P . M ., and Bro . J . Harrison next
presented to the lodge a most beautiful frame for the Centenary warrant , and on the motion of the W . M ., seconded by Bro . Darling , P . M ., J . W ., a cordial vote of thanks was given to those two brethren for their very handsome present . We might add that the Centenary warrant had been received , and was hung in the lodge , to the great delight of the brethren .
The lodge was then closed , with " Hearly good wishes " for its continued prosperity , after which the brethren partook of an excellent banquet , presided over by the W . M . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were put from the chair and received with musical honours , after which the toasts of " The M . W . G . M . and the Grand Officers , and also the R . W . Prov . G . Master of W . Yorks , Bro . T . W . Tew ,
J . P ., and the Prov . G . Officers , " were given and enthusiastically received . Bro . j . W . Monckman , P . M . 101 S , P . P . G . D . C . West Yorkshire , next proposed the toast of "The W . received with very great enthusiasm and musical honours , to which the W . M . suitably responded . The other toasts were "The Officers , " which was responded to by Bros . Naylor , P . M ., S .
