MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS
The General Committee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will hold its regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall to-morrow ( Saturday ) afternoon , at 4 P-m-The winter Half-Yearly Communication of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of England and Wales will be held at the Holborn Restaurant , on Tuesday
next , the 4 th inst , when the usual report will be delivered and nominations for the offices of Grand Master and Grand Treasurer respectively will be handed in . Bro . Bradnee , of Torquay , the well-known artist , has taken an excellent photograph of Bro . W . J . Hughan , of that town , known throughout the Masonic world as a student of our "Mysteries , " and a P . G . D . of
the Grand Lodge of England . Those who are personally familiar with Bro . Hughan say it is by far the best portrait ever taken of him . It is in the ordinary garb , but many of his friends wish our brother would get over his repugnance to being taken in Masonic costume ; but that is not likely now , we suppose , a'ter declining so to do for over a quarter of a century . Copies may be had direct from the
office of the Freemason at 2 S . each , post free . The Jubilee offering to the Queen from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines , consisting of models of the Britannia , a sailing line-of-battle ship of 120 guns , and the Victoria ironclad battle ship , was presented to her Majesty at Windsor [ Castle by the Admiral of the Fleet , Sir Alexander Milne , Bart ., G . C . B ., on the 22 nd ult .
The renowned Masonic scholar , General Pike , has just issued his annual address as President of the " Masonic Veteran Association" of the District of Columbia . In it he advocates the establishment of a "National Home for Indigent and Decayed Masons " for all the Grand Lodges in U . S . A ., or " three or four Homes for indigent widows of Masons and a Home for the
orphans of Masons . He suggests as a site for such a venture some " Western State of temperate climate and fertile soil , with grounds around it for gardens and fields and orchards , and a modest library to refresh the souls of its inmates . " Some may think this " the dream of an old man , " but it ought to be capable of realisation , and ¦ would be , were Ihe several Grand Lodges in America
united and hearty in the realisation of such a- practical form of Masonic benevolence . There are already several such homes in the States , and more are being prepared for . so that , after all , if not quite in the same way , General Pike's vision is being accomplished all in good time . The report of the proceedings lor 1888 of the Prov . G . Lodge and Chapter of Durham is now circulating
amongst the members concerned , and makes a very handsome and deeply interesting volume , so much so , that the Prov . G . Sec . ( Bro . R . Hudson ) is to be sincerely congratulated on his able production , by far the best he has yet issued . Not only are the ordinary meetings reported , but the special ones respecting the presentation to Bro . Sir Hedworth and Lady Williamson on their silver
wedding ; the grand assembly at Sunderland to hear Bro . Hughan's lecture , given in brief ; and also another splendid gathering at Darlington on the celebration of the Centenary of the R . A . chapter there , the excellent address by Comp . Dr . Drury , P . Z ., & c , the energetic Scribe E ., being given in full , lt will be seen , therefore , that there is no lack of material to render this issue the most eventful and valuable of the series .
We have been given to understand that the motion , which Bro . J . F . H . Woodward , P . G . S . B ., has given notice it is his intention to bring forward in Grand Lodge at its Quarterly Communication on Wednesday next , will be seconded by Bro . W . Beavis , P . M ., VV . M .
1310 , Prov . G . Purst . Middx . The object of this motion , which involves an alteration in Rule 21 , Book of Consitutions , is to enable a lodge to be master of its own affairs by means of a majority of those who vote , and a brother to abstain from voting , if he wishes .
A grand complimentary smoking concert was arranged to take place at Freemasons' Tavern , on the evening of Thursday , the 29 th ult ., in honour of Bro . Arthur Combes , whose reputation as a comic vocalist stands high , and who , indeed , is one of the few comics of to-day
who can boast of possessing vocal ability combined with a true sense of humour . The programme , which had been compiled for the occasion , was an excellent one , and we have no doubt will have been hugely appreciated by the assembled friends and patrons of Bro . Aithur Combes .
Bro . Sir Charles Warren is so much en evidence just now , that we may do well to call attention to an excellent and life-like photo of the ex-Commissioner of Police in his full uniform , together with his orders and medals , lately published by Mr . Barraud in " Men and Women of the Day . " To Masonic readers this photograph has interest , specially on account of Bro . Sir Charles being one
of the founders , and for two years the first Master , of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge . Its Treasurer , Bro . Walter Besant , is also the subject of a portrait in the same publication , and we may add that Bro .=. Viscount Wolseley , P . G . W ., the late Admiral Sir Wm . Hewett , V . C , Lord Hartington , and Henry Irving have lately appeared in this journal . A brief , but interesting , biography accompanies
each picture . Bro . Sir Daniel Gooch , P . G . M . Bucks , was given a few months ago . In the account of his Masonic career , it was stated that he was initiated in Exeter in 1850 . Amongst Mr . Barraud ' s varied portraits have been Lord Tennyson , Mrs . Gladstone , Lady Randolph Chuictiill , Mr . W . G . Grace , Ruskin , Mr . Chamberlain , Miss Ellen Terry , and Mr . John Bright .
The Electric Light in its vast superiority to gas and all other forms of artificial light , is an apt illustration of the position which '' Grant ' s Morella Cherry Brandy " maintains in comparison with all other Liqueurs , in its perfection of rich fruity flavour . Comforting in cold weather . Sold everywhere . Be sure and ask for Grant ' s . T . Grant and Sons , Maidstone . Makers also of the nonalcoholic wine "Morella , " and of the delicious "Morella Marmalade . " Sold by Grocers .

Tliere was a gymnastic display and assaultat-arms at the Athenajum , Goldhawk-road , on Tuesday evening , when a very successful entertainment was given in aid of the St . Stephen ' s Young Men ' s Club and Institute .
The lion ' s share of the display was undertaken by a number of the boys of St . Stephen ' s School , under the direction of the Rev . A . K . Ramsay , one team , with Cecil Freeman as leader , giving an exhibition on the parallel bars , and another , with H . VVojdin as leader , performing with the dumb bells . The mass exercise was djne under the direction of Mr . H . To . vnshend , and there was a running
exercise , with the brothers Vernon and Cecil Abbott as leaders , under ihe direction of Sergt .-Maj . Clark , 18 th Middlesex R . V ., which was encored . Half-a-dozen members of the German Gymnastic Society gave a fine exhibition of their skill on the horizontal bars , and a detachment of the iSth Middlesex R . V . went through a series of bayonet , sword , and physical exercises . The boys acquitted themselves
well , their various performances being loudly applauded , while the military and horizontal bar portions of the entertainment . proved equally attractive . Mr . T . Reynolds gave a boxing solo , which was received with shouts of laughter , and there was some good boxing both by the boys and men and three bouts at wrestling , the whole concluding with cock fighting by the boys , in which Vernon Abbott after a hard tussle with his brother Cecil , came off
victorious . _ Miss Watier very kindly and very ably presided at the piano—several of the exercises being done to a musical accompaniment—and thegeneral arrangements left nothing to be desired by the crowded audience . The Rev . A . K . Ramsay desjrves high commendation for his encouragement and direction of these gymnastic exercises , and a word of praise is alsj due to Mr . Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead has consented to hold the presidency of the St . Bride ' s Youths' Institute during his year gf office .
Townshend for his careful training of the boys in their " mass exercise . "
