P ., won four gold medals , one silver medal , and several other prizes at the horse show held recently at Paris . PRINCK OF WALES ' S HOSPITAL FUND . —The Executive Committee of this fund are issuing another appeal for subscriptions , as there has been a falling off in the income ot the fund .

THE COUNTESS OF WARWICK has issued an appeal to the ladies of Warwickshire for funds to enable her to send a Christmas greeting to all the Warwickshire soldiers serving at the front . THE LORD CHANCELLOR ( Bro . the Earl of Halsbury ) has conferre d the vacant rectory of AH Hallows-on-the-Wall on the Rev . Montagu Fowler , M . A ., who was formerly domestic chaplain to Archbishop Benson .

Lott , the organist , played the " Marche Funebre" ( Chopin ) and " The Lost Chord , " as a tribute of respect to the memory of the late Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan . , BRO . HENRY RUSSELL ' S many friends will be glad to hear that his condition on Wednesday showed a decided amelioration , and Mr . Buckstone Browne was able to state in the evening that he did not consider there was now cause for immediate anxiety .

THE EARL OF DUNDONALD , who had the good fortune to lead his cavalry into Ladysmith on the famous day of its relief , has arrived in England with Captain de Pledge , of the 19 th Hussars , having travelled by the German line from Delagoa Bay to Naples . BRO . ALDERMAN SIR J OSEPH DIMSDALE , M . P ., the Chairman of the Police Committee , has issued invitations for a dinner of the Committee at Grocers' Hall on Thursday , the 6 th instant . Bro . the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs will be the guests of the evening .

BRO . W . H . CUM MINGS , the Principal of the Guildhall School of Music , includes among his greatest treasures the manuscript of Bro . the late Sir Arthur Sullivan ' s first composition as a boy . Bro . Sir Arthur presented the scroll to Bro . Cummings many years ago .

TRADE WITH SOUTH AFRICA . —Anticipating a rush of trade so soon as a settlement is arrived at in South Africa , the Castle-Union Line have just placed with Barclay , Curie , and Co . four steamers of large capacity and high speed , to be delivered in 12 months . THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE concluded his visit to T . R . H . the Prince and Princess of Wales on Wednesday , and returned to Gloucester House , Park-lane , VV . The Portuguese Minister and the Right Hon . A . J . Balfour have arrived at Sandringham as guests of their Royal Highnesses .

GREAT NORTHERN CENTRAL HOSPITAL . —The Queen in Council has granted to the Great Northern Central Hospital Letters Patent under the Great Seal incorporating the hospital by Royal Charter under the title of "the President , Vice-Presidents , and Governors of the Great Northern Central Hospital . "

THE GOLDSMITHS' BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION . —The annual election of annuitants took place at the Freemasons' Tavern , Great Oaeen-street , on Tuesday , when . 10 male and eight female candidates were admitted to the benefits of the charity from amongst 42 applicants . As usual the candidates were entertained at tea . At the conclusion of the election an address was delivered by Bro . H . C . Lambert , a trustee , who presided .

C , Secretary of the Jubilee Masters'Lodge , No . 2712 , has arranged with the Logic Club of Instruction for a rehearsal of the ceremony of raising at the next meeting to be held on Friday , the 21 st instant , at the Hotel Cecil , by the following brethren : Bros . CHRISTMAS APPEAL . —Queen Charlotte ' s Lying-in Hospital , Marylebone-road , N . W . —This Hospital , which was founded in the year 1752 , and has her Majesty the Queen for its patron , receives between 1100 and 1200 patients into its wards every year , besides attending a similar number at their own homes as out-patients . A feature of the work during the past year has been the reception as patients of wives of soldiers serving with the forces in South Africa . About 100 women have thus been attended ,

mostly as in-patients . The enlargement and renovation of the Hospital is approaching completion , but funds are greatly needed for this purpose . The com nittee are making an urgent appeal for the £ 7000 still needed for the building fund , and for ^ iooa additional income to enable them to maintain the enlarged Hosoital in full efficiency . Contributions may be sent to the bankers ( Messrs . Cocks , liidduloh and Co ., 43 . Charing Cross , S . W . ) , or to the secretary ( Mr . Arthur Watts ) at the Hospital .

CONSUMPTION : ITS " OPEN-AIR " TREATMENT . —The results of this new method of treatment of a disease which has for ages past been regarded as incurable are very interesting , and certainly most encouraging . Some time ago we took occasion to refer to the opening of the Belle Vue Sanatorium at Shotley Bridge , Durham County , Through the courtesy of the resident physician , who is also the proprietor , and has taken up this work with enthusiasm , we are now enabled to give a few facts in regard to retultsof treatment during the past six months . In eight cases out of 11 improvement

showed itself during the first week under treatment . Patients are carefully weighed every week , and in once case a gain of 15 'lb . was recorded alter eight weeks' treatment ; in another ! irjlb . after seven weeks ; in a third 251 b . after three weeks . Two of the cases have been sent home euredt Two of the patients still under treatment will shortly , it is expected , be pronounced cured ; and though four months ago these two were unable to walk more than a few yards without fatigue and shortness of breath , they are now able to take a six-mile walk ( three miies being up a steep hill ) , and return

feeling , to use their own expression , " fit to do it again . " Even in some advanced cases a prolonged course of treatment by the open-air method may bring | about ultimate cure . Sufferers are , however , advised to consult their family medical attendant immediately there is any suspicion of the development of chest trouble , associated-with cough and progessive weakness . The patient can then he placed at once under the

conditions most suitable for his case . It can , of course , be readily understood that the earlier stages of thedisease are the most easily cured . The method adopted at Belle Vue is based upon that which has been found to be productive of such excellent results at Nordrach , in the Black Forest . WE notice in the Report of the Board of General Purposes which will come before Grand Lodge on the 5 th instant , recommendations to increase the salaries of two of the clerks in the Grand Secretary ' s office . We are always pleased when we hear of seal and efficiency being recognised , but is not the increase in Bro . Palmer's case excessive in proportion to his length of service ?

IT IS RUMOURED that Bro . the Hon . Alar de Tatton Egerton will be installed Prov . G . Master of Cheshire on the 17 th instant . THE FREEMASONS OF OXFORDSHIRE intend to give Bro Viscount Valentia a welcome home banquet on his return from South Africa . He is Prov . G . Master of Mark Masons in Berkshire and Oxfordshire , and Dep . Prov . G . Master of Craft Masons in Oxfordshire .

WAR MEDALS . —A collection of 200 lots of war medals was dispersed at Debenham , Storr and Sons' Rooms , in Covent Garden , last week , when high prices were realised . A Naval Victoria Cross , with Mutiny medal , with bars for Lucknow and relief of Lucknow , brought £ 105 ; a gold collar of the Guelphic Civil Order , £ 60 . HAMPTON COURT PALACE is to be enriched by the re-erection of 13 wrought-iron gates that formerly stood at intervals between the private gardens and . the river . They are magnificent specimens of wrought-iron work , have been exhibited in various museums throughout the country , and now return to their original home after an absence of 40 years .

THE SURGICAL AID SOCIETY . —The 38 th annual meeting of this society will be held at Cannon-street Hotel , E . C , on Monday , the 3 rd instant , at 4 o'clock p . m . The chair will be taken by Bro . the Right Hon . Lord Mayor , who will be supported by Bro . Sheriff J oseph Lawrence , the Rev . R . S . de C . Laffan , the Rev . John Gritton , D . D . ; R . Brudenell Carter , Esq ., F . R . C . S . ; J . Herbert Tritton , Esq ., and other gentlemen . BRO . LORD AMPTHILL , the newly-appointed Governor of Madras , has arranged to leave England on Thursday , the 6 th instant , for the scene of his new duties , travelling vid Dover and Calais and overland to Marseilles . It is the intention of a large party of friends and late colleagues to assemble at the terminus on the mon . ing of his departure , to bid the new Governor God-speed . At Marseilles Lord Ampthill will embark on the P . and O . steamship Himalaya . To-day ( Friday ) he will be entertained at dinner by officials of the Colonial Office , and it is expected that the Right Hon . Joseph Chamberlain will preside .

IN THE course of his sermon at St . Paul ' s Cathedral on Sunday afternoon , Bro . Archdeacon Sinclair alluded to the late Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan . . The famous musician was , he said , one of four with whom the Cathedral had been intimately associated , who had been lately called to rest before they reached the top of Pizgah , and who were not permitted to look upon the promised land of the new century . Every lover of pure

music would grieve for Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan . In St . Paul's they thought of him as the creator of many hymn tunes , many services that had helped their religious experiences , some two score of beautiful . anthems , and the " In Memoriam " overture for the departed , which was used in St . Paul ' s every year at one of their greatest festivals .

MIDLAND RAILWAY AMBULANCE AWARDS . —The gold and silver medals granted by the directors of the Midland Railway Company , in recognition of special skill shown by ambulance men all over the system in rendering " first aid" to the injured , for the year ending September 30 th , were presented by Sir Henry Wiggin , Bart ., one of the directors , at the company's offices , Derby , on Thursday , the 15 th ult . Mr . E . W . Wells , assistant general manager , and Chairman of the Ambulance Award Committee ,

presided , and among those present were Mr . Charles Thomas , Deputy Chairman of the company ; Lord Belper , Lord Farrer , Mr . R . A . Allison , Mr . J . C . Carter , Mr . C . Booth , jun . THB ANNUAL DINNER of the AWersgate Past Officers' Club was held on Thursday at the Manchester Hotel , Bro . Thomas Briggs , C . C ( the president ) occupying the chair . A very pleasant evening resulted , a fact due to the terseness of the speeches and the excellence of the musical propramme presented . A feature of the gathering consisted of the offering ( f tangible marks of esteem to two members to whose efforts much of the enjoyment of the periodical reunions is undoubtedly attributable . Very

appropriately , therefore , the members evinced their appreciation of the services of their hon . secretary , Bro . James Mayhew , by asking his acceptance of a handsome liqueur stand , with a dainty bracelet for his daughter . No less valuable a member ol _ a club founded on the lines of the Past Officers is th e organiser of the musical entertainments that form the staple feature of the periodical gatherings . The debt of gratitude thus owed to Mr . Geo rge Weathersby was happily recognised by the presentation to him of a marble clock , with a brooch for his wife .

ON THURSDAY last a lecture , entitled "Four Months in Beleagured Ladysmith , " was given for the first time in London in aid of the Central London Throat and Ear Hospital , at the Queen ' s Hall , by Mr . VV . T . Maud , special artist for the Graphic , and late A . D . C . to General Ian Hamilton . The entertainment was under the special patronage of H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , H . R . H . the Duke of Cambridge , and Field-Marshal Viscount Wolseley . Sir Redvers and Lady Audrey Buller came up specially from Crediton , and were teceived at the Queen ' s Hall by the members of the

F-ntertainment Committee , viz , Captain Alfred Mutton , Bro . Lennox Browne , Mr . Calkin Lewis Jakins , Mr . Carmichael Thomas , and Mr . R . Kershaw , secretary of the Hospital . In addition to the above the following were amongst those present : The Countess of Noithesk , the Earl de Montalt and the Ladies Maude , Captain the Hon . Hedworth Lambton , R . Wyndham was to have made an appeal on behalf of the Hospital , but being unable to be present , Bro . Lennox Browne , F . R . C . S ., ably fulfilled his task and the result of the whole will , we are pleased to say , benefit the funds of the hospital to the extent of £ 1000 . A very handsome souvenir in the shape of a fully illustrated programme was supplied , reproducing on the front , in colours , a picture of Table Bay from the sea , from the painting of Bro . Lennox Browne , printed by Bro . George Kenning , 16 , Great Queen-street , W . C .

feeling , to use their own expression , " fit to do it again . " Even in some advanced cases a prolonged course of treatment by the open-air method may bring | about ultimate cure . Sufferers are , however , advised to consult their family medical attendant immediately there is any suspicion of the development of chest trouble , associated-with cough and progessive weakness . The patient can then he placed at once under the

conditions most suitable for his case . It can , of course , be readily understood that the earlier stages of thedisease are the most easily cured . The method adopted at Belle Vue is based upon that which has been found to be productive of such excellent results at Nordrach , in the Black Forest . We are always pleased when we hear of seal and efficiency being recognised , but is not the increase in Bro . Palmer's case excessive in proportion to his length of service ?

IT IS RUMOURED that Bro . the Hon . Alar de Tatton Egerton will be installed Prov . G . Master of Cheshire on the 17 th instant . THE FREEMASONS OF OXFORDSHIRE intend to give Bro Viscount Valentia a welcome home banquet on his return from South Africa . He is Prov . G . WAR MEDALS . —A collection of 200 lots of war medals was dispersed at Debenham , Storr and Sons' Rooms , in Covent Garden , last week , when high prices were realised . A Naval Victoria Cross , with Mutiny medal , with bars for Lucknow and relief of Lucknow , brought £ 105 ; a gold collar of the Guelphic Civil Order , £ 60 . HAMPTON COURT PALACE is to be enriched by the re-erection of 13 wrought-iron gates that formerly stood at intervals between the private gardens and . the river . They are magnificent specimens of wrought-iron work , have been exhibited in various museums throughout the country , and now return to their original home after an absence of 40 years .

THE SURGICAL AID SOCIETY . —The 38 th annual meeting of this society will be held at Cannon-street Hotel , E . C , on Monday , the 3 rd instant , at 4 o'clock p . m . BRO . LORD AMPTHILL , the newly-appointed Governor of Madras , has arranged to leave England on Thursday , the 6 th instant , for the scene of his new duties , travelling vid Dover and Calais and overland to Marseilles . It is the intention of a large party of friends and late colleagues to assemble at the terminus on the mon . ing of his departure , to bid the new Governor God-speed . At Marseilles Lord Ampthill will embark on the P . and O . steamship Himalaya . To-day ( Friday ) he will be entertained at dinner by officials of the Colonial Office , and it is expected that the Right Hon . Joseph Chamberlain will preside .

IN THE course of his sermon at St . Paul ' s Cathedral on Sunday afternoon , Bro . Archdeacon Sinclair alluded to the late Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan . . The famous musician was , he said , one of four with whom the Cathedral had been intimately associated , who had been lately called to rest before they reached the top of Pizgah , and who were not permitted to look upon the promised land of the new century . Every lover of pure

music would grieve for Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan . In St . Paul's they thought of him as the creator of many hymn tunes , many services that had helped their religious experiences , some two score of beautiful . anthems , and the " In Memoriam " overture for the departed , which was used in St . Paul ' s every year at one of their greatest festivals .

MIDLAND RAILWAY AMBULANCE AWARDS . —The gold and silver medals granted by the directors of the Midland Railway Company , in recognition of special skill shown by ambulance men all over the system in rendering " first aid" to the injured , for the year ending September 30 th , were presented by Sir Henry Wiggin , Bart ., one of the directors , at the company's offices , Derby , on Thursday , the 15 th ult . Mr . E . W . Wells , assistant general manager , and Chairman of the Ambulance Award Committee ,

THB ANNUAL DINNER of the AWersgate Past Officers' Club was held on Thursday at the Manchester Hotel , Bro . Thomas Briggs , C . C ( the president ) occupying the chair . A very pleasant evening resulted , a fact due to the terseness of the speeches and the excellence of the musical propramme presented . A feature of the gathering consisted of the offering ( f tangible marks of esteem to two members to whose efforts much of the enjoyment of the periodical reunions is undoubtedly attributable . Very

appropriately , therefore , the members evinced their appreciation of the services of their hon . secretary , Bro . James Mayhew , by asking his acceptance of a handsome liqueur stand , with a dainty bracelet for his daughter . No less valuable a member ol _ a club founded on the lines of the Past Officers is th e organiser of the musical entertainments that form the staple feature of the periodical gatherings . The debt of gratitude thus owed to Mr . Geo rge Weathersby was happily recognised by the presentation to him of a marble clock , with a brooch for his wife .

ON THURSDAY last a lecture , entitled "Four Months in Beleagured Ladysmith , " was given for the first time in London in aid of the Central London Throat and Ear Hospital , at the Queen ' s Hall , by Mr . VV . T . Maud , special artist for the Graphic , and late A . D . C . to General Ian Hamilton . The entertainment was under the special patronage of H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , H . R . H . the Duke of Cambridge , and Field-Marshal Viscount Wolseley . Sir Redvers and Lady Audrey Buller came up specially from Crediton , and were teceived at the Queen ' s Hall by the members of the

S ., ably fulfilled his task and the result of the whole will , we are pleased to say , benefit the funds of the hospital to the extent of £ 1000 . A very handsome souvenir in the shape of a fully illustrated programme was supplied , reproducing on the front , in colours , a picture of Table Bay from the sea , from the painting of Bro .
