COVENT GARDEN LODGE ( No . 1614 ) . —The usual weekly meeting of this lodge was held at the Criterion , Piccadilly , S . W ., on the 24 th ult ., when there were present Bros . F . M . Noakes , W . The lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . Bro . J . Greenway worked the ist Section of the First Lecture . Bro , J . D . Graham having offered himself as a candidate for initiation , the" W . M . rehearsed the ceremony . On rising for the first time , Bros . C . W . Austin and J . R . Hughes , of 179 , were unanimously elected joining members , being proposed by Bro . G . H . Beynolds . and seconded by Bro . A . Bullen . On rising for the second time , Bro . T . C . Smales was

unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing week , and appointed his officers in rotation . On rising for the third time , Bros . J . R . Hughes andC . W . Austin having been unanimously elected tellers , two ballots out of the funds of the lodge were drawn tor the Royal Masonic Charities , and were declared to be in favour of Bros . R . ] . Harnell and G . W . J . Rymer , the brethren having the privilege of placing the sum of £$ js . to whichever Charity they wished . The Auditors' report was then read , which was as follows : " The

Auditors have very much pleasure in stating that during the year 1888 32 meetings have been held . The number of attendances of members was 1237 , an increase of 330 over the year 1887 , giving an average of nearly 22 members being present at each meeting . The number of new joining members during the year was 72 . Three honorary members have been elected , viz .: Bros . General C . Graves , Past District Grand Master State of New York ; Theodore H . Tilton , Past P . Deputy G . M . 7 th District

New York ; and the Rev . J . G . McGonigle , P . High Priest of Philadelphia . The lodge has been opened in the First Degree 32 times , in the Second Degree 4 8 times , and in the Third Degree 26 times . The ceremony of initiation has been rehearsed 38 times , passing 25 times , raising 14 times , installation four times , and the ceremony of consecration , worked by Bro . James Terry , P . G . S . B ., the much-respected Secretary of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . The First Lecture , with its Sections ,

has been worked 78 times , the Second Lecture , with its Sections , 23 times , and the Third Lecture , with its Sections , seven times . The lodge has been resumed from one Degree to another 27 times , called off three times , and closed down 30 times . Votes of thanks have been recorded on the minutes to brethren for services as W . M . ' s and for other special services 20 times ; letters of thanks and condolence sent from the lodge five . Two ballots of £$ 5 s . have been drawn for from the

funds of the lodge of instruction for Subscriberships to one of the Royal Masonic Institutions , in accordance with By-law 37 , and which were declared to be in favour of Bros . R . J . Harnell and G . W . J . Rymer . In the year 1887 there was only one ballot . A etter was received at the beginning of the year from the M . W . Grand Master of Maryland , U . S . A ., thanking the lodge of instruction for having elected him an honorary member , and wishing the lodge of instruction every success . Bro . VV . C . Smith , P . M .,

having resigned , in June , the Prcceptorship of the lodge of instruction , Bro . W . Brindley , P . M ., was unanimously elected in his place . The Covent Garden Lodge of Instruction , in conjunction with the Emblematic , the Londesborough , and the Eclectic , presented Bro . VV . C . Smith with a handsome vote of thanks , on vellum ( presented by Bro . F . M . Noakes , the frame by Bro . R . J . Harnell ) , together with a purse of money , in recognition of his valuable services as Preceptor to

the lodges of instruction named . At the presentation , a supper was g iven to Bro . W . C . Smith by the members of these lodges , at the same time wishing him good health in the future . The supper in connection with the lodge of instruction was held at the Criterion in March last , and proved a great success as to members . The supper took place after the rehearsal of the ceremony of consecration by Bro . James Terry . Over 80 brethren sat down at the table . Bro . T . E . Weeks has acted during ihe year as Tyler

and Serving Brother , giving every satisfaction to the brethren attending the lodge of instruction . A New Year ' s gift of £ 1 is . was generously presented to him , also one of 3 s . to the waiter ( Bro . Tooley ) . In conclusion , the Auditors have much pleasure in stating that the expenses of the lodge of instruction have been less during the year 1888 than in former years , thus enabling the brethren who have attended over 20 times during the year to participate in two ballots , instead of one , as during the year 1887 .

They are also pleased to say the attendance of brethren during the year 1888 has been the largest since the lodge of instruction has been formed , and they hope still for a further success , and ask the members to assist all they possibly can , and so make the number of attendances during the year 188 9 larger than the year 1888 . Bros . Joseph Greenway , F . W . Buxton , and F . M . Noakes , Auditors . " Bro . W . Hancock proposed that the Auditors' report be adopted ; seconded by Bro . Charles Lambert , and carried

unanimously . A vote of thanks , to be entered on the minutes , to the Auditors , Bros . J . Greenway , F . Buxton , and F . M . Noakes , was proposed by Bro . G . H . Reynolds—seconded by Bro . F . Kedge , and carried unanimously . Bro . J . Greenway , in replying for the Auditors , thanked the brethren on their behalf , and said it had been a pleasure to audit the books of the lodge , which had been so clearly kept by Bro . G . Reynolds , Treas . and' Secretary . He had audited several books lately in connection with Freemasonry , and

it was a delight to know that during the year 1888 the working of this lodge of instruction had been carried out with less expense than in former years . He hoped that the year 1 S 8 9 would be as successful as the year 1888 . Bro . Arthur Bullen then proDosed that a hearty and cordial vote of thanks , to be recorded also on the minutes , be given to their worthy Treasurer and Secretary ( Bro . G . Reynolds ) for the attention and care he had given to the books of the lodge of instruction . He knew he had worked hard , for

some years past , for the lodge of instruction , and by his exertions had brought the lodge of instruction well before the Masonic world . Seconded by Bro . J . B . Grieve , and carried with acclamation . Bro . G . Reynolds , in replying to the vote of thanks , thanked the brethren for their confidence , and still hoped for better results in connection with the lodge of instruction . Bro . A . Clark gave notice of motion with respect to the appointment of an Assistant Preceptor . Nothing further offering for the good of Freemasonry , the lodge was closed .

was passed to Bro . Aslett for the excellent manner in which he had conducted the duties of W . M . for the first time in this lodge , and he was elected a joining member . Bro . Skar was elected W . M . for the next meeting , which will be officers' night , and it is hoped that the officers of the mother lodge will fully avail themselves of the privilege . M . 15 , and it proving unanimously in his favour he was exalted in a very impressive manner by Comp . F . Hilton , P . Z . Comp . Hilton installed Comp . Addington , M . E . Z ., and Comp . Tuck , as H ., in his well

known clear and perfect manner , while Comp . Grummant was seen to advantage in installing Comp . Crook as J . Ihe officers invested by Comp . Hilton , on behalf of Comp . Addington , who had unfortunately temporarily lost his voice , were Comps . Major Williams , P . Z ., Treas . ( 10 th time ); Capt . C . W . Williams , P . Z ., S . E . ; Benedetti , S . N . ; Fleck , Principal Soj . ; Meierhoff , ist Asst . Soj . ;

and Woods , 2 nd Asst . Soj . The other business having been disposed of , thegchapter was closed . At the banquet which followed , the toasts of " The Queen and Royal Arch Masonry ; " "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , G . Z . ; " "The Pro G . Z ., G . H ., G . J , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " received a right royal welcome from the companions present .

Comp . F . Hilton , P . Z ., gave " The M . E . Z ., Comp . Addington ; the H ., Comp . Tuck ; and the J ., Comp . Crook . " He said that he could add little to recommend Comp . Addington to those who knew him so well , and who knew how enthusiastic he had been in all work relating to the Craft . He was also always ready to help in the cause of Charity , and was ready and willing tj give his best energies

to the good of Masonry , and to encourage those who delighted in the glorious Order of which they were so glad to be members . He was glad to see him as Erst Principal , also Comp . Tuck as H . Comp . Tuck hai come to the meeting , although suffering greatly , to gi / e everyone a chance to progress in the chapter . Comp . Crook had done excellent work in the chapter when he was , P . S ., but had

been compelled to wait until that year for his Craft qualification to enter the J . chair . The Three Principals were of the best , and he wished them a prosperous year of office , and plenty of work to try their metal . The M . E . Z . thanked the companions : or the extremely gratifying way in which the toast was received . He would try hard to emulate his predecessors , and so make the Star

Chapter more famous even than it was now . Comp . Grummant , acting H ., replied for Comp . Tuck , and Comp . Crook , J ., promised to uphoVl the honour of the chapter , and to try to give satisfaction to the members . The M . E . Z ., Comp . Addington , said le was very gratified to have Comp . Towers as an exaltee that night . He was a worthy Mason , who would brhg honour to the

chapter , as he possessed every good quality he should possess . He trusted he should be scared to see Comp . Towers the M . E . Z . of the chapter . Comp . Towers said that for several rears he had thought he would like to join the Royal Arrh , and was glad to become a member of the Star Chaper , where he met so many dear friends . He had been very deeply impressed by

the beautiful ritual of the Order , ant trusted that he should be a worthy and useful member . Comp . Grummant , P . Z ., actinr H ., proposed "The Visitors , " most of whom were lot strangers to those present . He extolled each one , explaining the work that each had done for the good of Maonry . Comp . Capt . R . J . Vincent , H . ilect 1329 , M . E . Z . 1777

, said he had enjoyed a great Masinic treat in witnessing the installation ceremonies so abV carried through . He heartily appreciated the cordial in'itation he had received . He spoke of Comp . Hilton , P . Z , Preceptor of the Star Chapter of Instruction , in terms of high commendation , especially lauding his ardour in arrying out any duty that might devolve upon him .

Comps . Walters , Taylor , Kbps , and Voisey spoke in the same strain , the latter sa / in _ r it would be a work of supererogation on his part to praise the excellent working he had witnessed . He considerel that Comp . Bumstead , P . Z ., deserved great praise fpr timing out such perfect pupils . The M . E . Z . proposed "Th TreasurerS . E . and

, , Officers . " He said that Comp .. vIajor Williams , who was the first M . E . Z . of the chapte , performed the duties of Treasurer in a most praisewortt / manner , while , with his son , Captain Williams , P . Z ., who was also one of the founders of the chapter , he loo : ed after the welfare of this chapter in a most judicious an thoughtful manner . To them was due the greater pat of the praise for having

made the chapter such a succes . Comp . Major Williams , P ., ' ., Treasurer , expressed his pleasure at having been the oly Treasurer of the chapter . He had been glad to hear le words of praise given to those who had worked so we ) in the ceremonies . He was

sure that praise was deserved He would spare no effort that would add to the prospeity ot the chapter . Comp . Captain C . Woolrer Williams , P . Z ., S . Hughes , of 179 , were unanimously elected joining members , being proposed by Bro . G . H . Beynolds . and seconded by Bro . A . Bullen . On rising for the second time , Bro . T . C . Smales was

unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing week , and appointed his officers in rotation . On rising for the third time , Bros . J . R . Hughes andC . W . Austin having been unanimously elected tellers , two ballots out of the funds of the lodge were drawn tor the Royal Masonic Charities , and were declared to be in favour of Bros . R . ] . Harnell and G . W . J . Rymer , the brethren having the privilege of placing the sum of £$ js . to whichever Charity they wished . The Auditors' report was then read , which was as follows : " The

Auditors have very much pleasure in stating that during the year 1888 32 meetings have been held . The number of attendances of members was 1237 , an increase of 330 over the year 1887 , giving an average of nearly 22 members being present at each meeting . The number of new joining members during the year was 72 . Three honorary members have been elected , viz .: Bros . General C . Graves , Past District Grand Master State of New York ; Theodore H . Tilton , Past P . Deputy G . M . 7 th District

New York ; and the Rev . J . G . McGonigle , P . High Priest of Philadelphia . The lodge has been opened in the First Degree 32 times , in the Second Degree 4 8 times , and in the Third Degree 26 times . The ceremony of initiation has been rehearsed 38 times , passing 25 times , raising 14 times , installation four times , and the ceremony of consecration , worked by Bro . James Terry , P . G . S . B ., the much-respected Secretary of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . The First Lecture , with its Sections ,

has been worked 78 times , the Second Lecture , with its Sections , 23 times , and the Third Lecture , with its Sections , seven times . The lodge has been resumed from one Degree to another 27 times , called off three times , and closed down 30 times . Votes of thanks have been recorded on the minutes to brethren for services as W . M . ' s and for other special services 20 times ; letters of thanks and condolence sent from the lodge five . Two ballots of £$ 5 s . have been drawn for from the

funds of the lodge of instruction for Subscriberships to one of the Royal Masonic Institutions , in accordance with By-law 37 , and which were declared to be in favour of Bros . R . J . Harnell and G . W . J . Rymer . In the year 1887 there was only one ballot . A etter was received at the beginning of the year from the M . W . Grand Master of Maryland , U . S . A ., thanking the lodge of instruction for having elected him an honorary member , and wishing the lodge of instruction every success . Bro . VV . C . Smith , P . M .,

having resigned , in June , the Prcceptorship of the lodge of instruction , Bro . W . Brindley , P . M ., was unanimously elected in his place . The Covent Garden Lodge of Instruction , in conjunction with the Emblematic , the Londesborough , and the Eclectic , presented Bro . VV . C . Smith with a handsome vote of thanks , on vellum ( presented by Bro . F . M . Noakes , the frame by Bro . R . J . Harnell ) , together with a purse of money , in recognition of his valuable services as Preceptor to

the lodges of instruction named . At the presentation , a supper was g iven to Bro . W . C . Smith by the members of these lodges , at the same time wishing him good health in the future . The supper in connection with the lodge of instruction was held at the Criterion in March last , and proved a great success as to members . The supper took place after the rehearsal of the ceremony of consecration by Bro . James Terry . Over 80 brethren sat down at the table . Bro . T . E . Weeks has acted during ihe year as Tyler

and Serving Brother , giving every satisfaction to the brethren attending the lodge of instruction . A New Year ' s gift of £ 1 is . was generously presented to him , also one of 3 s . to the waiter ( Bro . Tooley ) . In conclusion , the Auditors have much pleasure in stating that the expenses of the lodge of instruction have been less during the year 1888 than in former years , thus enabling the brethren who have attended over 20 times during the year to participate in two ballots , instead of one , as during the year 1887 .

They are also pleased to say the attendance of brethren during the year 1888 has been the largest since the lodge of instruction has been formed , and they hope still for a further success , and ask the members to assist all they possibly can , and so make the number of attendances during the year 188 9 larger than the year 1888 . Bros . Joseph Greenway , F . W . Buxton , and F . M . Noakes , Auditors . " Bro . W . Hancock proposed that the Auditors' report be adopted ; seconded by Bro . Charles Lambert , and carried

unanimously . A vote of thanks , to be entered on the minutes , to the Auditors , Bros . J . Greenway , F . Buxton , and F . M . Noakes , was proposed by Bro . G . H . Reynolds—seconded by Bro . F . Kedge , and carried unanimously . Bro . J . Greenway , in replying for the Auditors , thanked the brethren on their behalf , and said it had been a pleasure to audit the books of the lodge , which had been so clearly kept by Bro . G . Reynolds , Treas . and' Secretary . He had audited several books lately in connection with Freemasonry , and

it was a delight to know that during the year 1888 the working of this lodge of instruction had been carried out with less expense than in former years . He hoped that the year 1 S 8 9 would be as successful as the year 1888 . Bro . Arthur Bullen then proDosed that a hearty and cordial vote of thanks , to be recorded also on the minutes , be given to their worthy Treasurer and Secretary ( Bro . G . Reynolds ) for the attention and care he had given to the books of the lodge of instruction . He knew he had worked hard , for

some years past , for the lodge of instruction , and by his exertions had brought the lodge of instruction well before the Masonic world . Seconded by Bro . J . B . Grieve , and carried with acclamation . Bro . G . Reynolds , in replying to the vote of thanks , thanked the brethren for their confidence , and still hoped for better results in connection with the lodge of instruction . Bro . A . H . the Prince of Wales , G . Z . ; " "The Pro G . Z ., G . H ., G . J , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " received a right royal welcome from the companions present .

Comp . F . Hilton , P . Z ., gave " The M . E . Z ., Comp . Addington ; the H ., Comp . Tuck ; and the J ., Comp . Crook . " He said that he could add little to recommend Comp . Addington to those who knew him so well , and who knew how enthusiastic he had been in all work relating to the Craft . He was also always ready to help in the cause of Charity , and was ready and willing tj give his best energies

to the good of Masonry , and to encourage those who delighted in the glorious Order of which they were so glad to be members . He was glad to see him as Erst Principal , also Comp . Tuck as H . Comp . Tuck hai come to the meeting , although suffering greatly , to gi / e everyone a chance to progress in the chapter . Comp . Crook had done excellent work in the chapter when he was , P . S ., but had

been compelled to wait until that year for his Craft qualification to enter the J . chair . The Three Principals were of the best , and he wished them a prosperous year of office , and plenty of work to try their metal . The M . E . Z . thanked the companions : or the extremely gratifying way in which the toast was received . He would try hard to emulate his predecessors , and so make the Star

Chapter more famous even than it was now . Comp . Grummant , acting H ., replied for Comp . Tuck , and Comp . Crook , J ., promised to uphoVl the honour of the chapter , and to try to give satisfaction to the members . The M . E . Z ., Comp . Addington , said le was very gratified to have Comp . Towers as an exaltee that night . He was a worthy Mason , who would brhg honour to the

chapter , as he possessed every good quality he should possess . He trusted he should be scared to see Comp . Towers the M . E . Z . of the chapter . Comp . Towers said that for several rears he had thought he would like to join the Royal Arrh , and was glad to become a member of the Star Chaper , where he met so many dear friends . He had been very deeply impressed by

the beautiful ritual of the Order , ant trusted that he should be a worthy and useful member . Comp . Grummant , P . Z ., actinr H ., proposed "The Visitors , " most of whom were lot strangers to those present . He extolled each one , explaining the work that each had done for the good of Maonry . Comp . Capt . R . J . Vincent , H . ilect 1329 , M . E . Z . 1777

, said he had enjoyed a great Masinic treat in witnessing the installation ceremonies so abV carried through . He heartily appreciated the cordial in'itation he had received . He spoke of Comp . Hilton , P . Z , Preceptor of the Star Chapter of Instruction , in terms of high commendation , especially lauding his ardour in arrying out any duty that might devolve upon him .

Comps . Walters , Taylor , Kbps , and Voisey spoke in the same strain , the latter sa / in _ r it would be a work of supererogation on his part to praise the excellent working he had witnessed . He considerel that Comp . Bumstead , P . Z ., deserved great praise fpr timing out such perfect pupils . The M . E . Z . proposed "Th TreasurerS . E . and

, , Officers . " He said that Comp .. vIajor Williams , who was the first M . E . Z . of the chapte , performed the duties of Treasurer in a most praisewortt / manner , while , with his son , Captain Williams , P . Z ., who was also one of the founders of the chapter , he loo : ed after the welfare of this chapter in a most judicious an thoughtful manner . To them was due the greater pat of the praise for having

made the chapter such a succes . Comp . Major Williams , P ., ' ., Treasurer , expressed his pleasure at having been the oly Treasurer of the chapter . He had been glad to hear le words of praise given to those who had worked so we ) in the ceremonies . He was

sure that praise was deserved He would spare no effort that would add to the prospeity ot the chapter . Comp . Captain C . Woolrer Williams , P . Z ., S . E ., reiterated all his father ' s kin . wishes to the chapter . He felt the same interest , and wuld never spare any trouble when the welfare of the chpter , or of its members , was concerned .

Comp . Benedetti , S . N ., : hanked the companions for the way in which the toastof " The Officers " had been received . Comp . Carl Fleck , P . S , explained that he was very busy rehearsing the Craft nstallation ceremony , and had his hands full as W . M . of me lodge and S . W . of another
