"GRAND PORTRAIT PAINTER . " To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , The following extract from the Minutes of the Grand Lodge held at Freemasons' Hall on the 23 rd November , 17 S 5 , will doubtless supply the information desired by Bro . "R . O . Davies , 555 " as regards the

, "Grand Portrait Painter . " Bro . Rowland Hill , D . G . M ., presided on the occasion as G . Master , and the brother described as Grand Treasurer was James Heseltine , the Senior G . Warden of the year , who , earlier in the meeting , had been appointed in succession to Bro . Rowland Berkeley , deceased , and invested with the insignia of office as Grand Treasurer . The extract , which I give in full , reads thus :

" The Grand Treasurer acquainted the Grand Master in the Chair that he had received a Letter from the Duke of Manchester , in which his Grace expresses his wish that the Society would bestow some Honorary Mark of its Approbation on the Reverend William Peters for his Elegant and Valuable Present of the Portrait of the Right Honorable Lord Petre , Past Grand Master . Whereupon , the Grand

Lodge taking the same into Consideration , and reflecting that our Brother Peters's present was not | only highly valuable in itself , but opened a Prospect to the Society of having its Hall Ornamented with the successive Portraits of the Grand Masters in future . There was , therefore , the greatest propriety in complying with the Recommendation of His Grace the Duke of Manchester : on which it

was " Unanimously Resolved , " That , in grateful Testimony of the Service rendered to the Society by the Reverend William Peters in his Elegant . present of the Portrait of the Right Honorable Lord Petre , the Grand Master be authorised to confer on him the Rank of a Grand Officer by appointing him Grand

Portrait Painter . "On which the Grand Master in the Chair was accordingly pleased to appoint the Reverend William Peters to be Grand Portrait Painter . " The appointment , however , seems to have been , in accordance with the Duke ' s suggestion , in the nature of a personal compliment to Bro . Peters , nor does he appear ,

from the Minutes of succeeding Grand Feasts , to have been appointed and invested as the rest of the G . Officers —the'Wardens , Secretary , Chaplain , and Sword Bearer . When he died , the office ceased , and the only other instance of the appointment of a Portrait Painter of which I have read will be found in the warrant granted on the 7 th March , 1 S 01 , by Bro . Lieut .-Gen . S . Hulse , Prov . G .

Master of Sussex , and constituting the South Saxon Lodge at Lewes the Prov . G . Lodge of Sussex . In this warrant , which will be found in Bro . T . Francis ' s " History of Freemasonry in Sussex , " pp . 35—37 , there is included among the Grand Officers " Mr . Edmund Scott , P . G . Portrait Painter , " the said E . Scott being , I believe , grandfather of the late Bro . J . Henderson Scott , P . G . D . of

England , and D . P . G . M . of Sussex , whose death must be still fresh in the memories of your readers . I will add that Bro . Peters was frequently thanked by Grand Lodge for his services to the Society ; that he was the first Secretary of the Prince of Wales Lodge—now No . 259—which was warranted as No . 503 , on the 10 th August , 17 S 7 . and that as recorded at page 34 of the " History of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , " which 1 had the

honour of compiling for the Centenary Festival of that Charity , he , on the 30 th November , 1793 , presented the School with a portrait by himself of the Chevalier Ruspini , for which the General Committee passed a resolution of thanks to him at their meeting the month following , and which , I am given to understand , is " still religiously " preserved " among her ancient relics . "—Yours faithfully and fraternally , G . BLIZARD ABBOTT .
