Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

was so successful that no help ' was needed , and he felt he could retire—which he did to his own loss . He was elected an honorary member and appreciated it , as it gave him an opportunity of taking a share in , the work . He felt grateful to Bro . Browne , who had with modesty declined to do work he was capable of doing , as it gave him an opportunity of coming amongst them and of furthering the work .

Bro . Lennox Browne , I . P . M ., said that those conversant with Masonry knew , when they saw the gavel in the possession of the I . P . M ., that he was about to propose "The Health of the W . M . " in the chair . He had not been accustomed to make long speeches during the long time he occupied the chair , and he did not intend to change that custom . As " good wine needs no bush , " so Bro . Trendell

needed no laudation . The members knew that since their W . M .-joined the lodge he had rarely failed to attend , and generously stood aside to allow another brother to fill the chair . Circumstances , however , prevented that taking place , and the promotion of many deserving brethren was delayed for a whole year . Now that Bro . Trendell had reached the chair , he rejoiced that those brethren had

gained their promotion . He hoped that promotion would go on merrily , and that he should live to see the latest initiate in the chair . He would hold up to them for emulation the character of Bro . Trendell , who had received high honours from her Majesty and who would be considered deserving of high honours in Masonry . Their W . M . would

do his work well and would have the assistance of the Past Masters •Bro . A . J . R . Trendell , C . M . G ., W . M .. tendered his . hearty thanks for the kindness with which he had been received . •He entirely concurred with the remarks made by the I . P . M ., that the brethren who waited a year in consequence of the death of the W . M . elect—for whom he felt

it an honour to stand aside—had now received that reward due to their Masonic experience . He was glad to think that in his year of office they were likely to be distinguished by a special number of initiates and joining members . As he had had the honour of being elected a ¦ member of the Royal Colonial Institute , he had taken means to bring before that Council the great advantages

arising from this lodge , and those initiates and joining members he had mentioned were fairly representative of that Council . He had a letter from Sir Charles Bailey conveying the sentiments expressed by several Colonial members , and , after regretting his inability to attend the lodge , expressed the hope that he shall be able to obtain the support of several of the Agents General of the

Colonies . The writer also considered it a special compliment that it had fallen to his good friend , Bro . Lennox Browne , to preside wiih such distinction over the lodge for two years . Bro . Browne had given his whole heart to Masonry , and they not only appreciated him as a good brother , but they respected his hard work as a professional man , for he had set apart for Masonic work a large portion

of his valuable time . He hoped that those brethren to whom collars had been given would put before themselves the hard work and devotion shown by Bro . Browne as an example . Before he sat down he begged to propose a toast that naturally fell to his lot— "The Health of the I . P . M . " He thaked Bro . Browne for the great assistance he had given , and for his distinguished services .

Bro . Lennox Browne , I . P . M ., said that in the kind remarks made of him , nothing had been said which could exceed what he felt he would like to do for that lodge . He was ambitious to install Bro . Trendell , but he felt that he could not do it with that perfection which the cernmony demanded , and he knew that in Bro . Trueman Wood they had a member of the lodge who was particularly suited by

his long friendship with the W . M ., and his Masonic ability , to perform the task . He was now a P . M ., and would continue to do his best to assist the lodge . He was delighted to hear a brother in the lodge , when he proposed a candidate , guarantee that he should be well prepared to answer the questions at the proper time , for , although

promotion was generally by seniority , it sometimes went by merit . He trusted he should always be received in the same way as he had been that night , as long as he remained a member , which would be as long as he lived . "The Visitors" was next honoured , and responded to by Bros . Edmeston and Greig , after which " The Officers " was given , and appropriately replied to by the S . W . and J . W . The Tyler's toast then closed a pleasant and successful meeting . ST . MARK'S COLLEGE LODGE ( No . 2157 ) . . —A regular meeting was held at the Holborn Restaurant on the 25 th ult . All Masonic business being ended , the lodge was closed . The brethren afterwards dined together under the presidency of the W . M .

BRENTWOOD . —Lodge of Hope and Unit y ( No . 214 ) . —The above lodge held its installation meeting at the White Hart Hotel , on Thursday , the 24 th ult . More than usual interest was attached to this meeting , owing to the popularity of the W . M , elect , who is the founder and supporter of the Cottage Hospital , and who , . unfortunately , lost a quantity of valuable plate the same

. morning by burglars . There were present Bros . H . Gamble Hobson , W . M . ; J . C Goode , S . W . ; G . C Morant , J . W . ; Geo . Cooper , P . M ., P . G . D . ; Col . W . J . Burgess , P . accorded to him for his services during the past year . A gentleman was proposed as a candidate for initiation . Bro . F . W . Imbert Terry was elected the representative of the Charity Committee . All business being ended , the brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet provided by Mrs . Mason , and a selection of high class music was performed under the able direction of the accomplished Organist .

LEWES . —South Saxon Lodge ( No . 311 ) . — The annual meeting of this lodge was held at the Freemasons' Hall , on the 16 th ult ., when Bro . Smith Stone was installed W . M . for the ensuing year . After business the brethren adjourned to the Bear Hotel , where a capital banquet was prepared for them by the host , Bro . Whitcombe . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , replying to one of which , the Secretary , Bro . Gerard Lloyd , gave a

few interesting particulars respecting this ancient lodge , from which it appears that the lodge is 93 years old , the warrant being applied for and obtained in the year 179 6 , when George the Fourth , then Prince of Wales , was Grand Master ; and such was the vitality of this lodge in those early days that before it had been established 12 months the brethren were agitating for a new hall , and forthwith

proceeded to lay the foundation-stone on the site of the present hall with much pomp and ceremony , causing considerable stir in the ancient town . The hall was quickly finished , and it was dedicated in 1797 . In 179 S a lodge of emergency was called to consider the propriety of subscribing to a fund for the defence of the nation against " an ambitious , powerful , and detirmined enemy" ( so run

the old minutes ) , this enemy being Napoleon Bonaparte . As a result of this meeting 38 guineas were subscribed . In 1 S 22 the W . M . of the lodge laid the foundation-stone of the Lewes Gas Works , with the full ceremony of the Order . In 1 S 30 the brethren obtained a dispensation from Grand Lodge to appear in full Masonic costume in public , in order to attend in procession with the various public

bodies of the town to welcome King William the Fourth and his Queen , who in that year visited the town , the brethren being entertained later in the day at a good old English dinner by the public officials of the town . The present commodious hall was built in 1 S 6 S , the foundationstone being laid by the present Earl of Chichester , then

Prov . G . M . of Sussex . The lodge is now in a very satisfactory state , both financially and numerically , it being the next to the largest lodge in the province , _ We congratulate the South Saxon Lodge on its past history and its present position , and trust the brethren may all be spared to receive and wear the centenary jewel .
