Bro . Lennox Browne , I . P . M ., said that those conversant with Masonry knew , when they saw the gavel in the possession of the I . P . M ., that he was about to propose "The Health of the W . M . As he had had the honour of being elected a ¦ member of the Royal Colonial Institute , he had taken means to bring before that Council the great advantages
arising from this lodge , and those initiates and joining members he had mentioned were fairly representative of that Council . He had a letter from Sir Charles Bailey conveying the sentiments expressed by several Colonial members , and , after regretting his inability to attend the lodge , expressed the hope that he shall be able to obtain the support of several of the Agents General of the
Colonies . The writer also considered it a special compliment that it had fallen to his good friend , Bro . Lennox Browne , to preside wiih such distinction over the lodge for two years . Bro . Before he sat down he begged to propose a toast that naturally fell to his lot— "The Health of the I . P . M . " He thaked Bro . Bro . Lennox Browne , I . P . M ., said that in the kind remarks made of him , nothing had been said which could exceed what he felt he would like to do for that lodge . After business the brethren adjourned to the Bear Hotel , where a capital banquet was prepared for them by the host , Bro . Whitcombe . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , replying to one of which , the Secretary , Bro . Gerard Lloyd , gave a
few interesting particulars respecting this ancient lodge , from which it appears that the lodge is 93 years old , the warrant being applied for and obtained in the year 179 6 , when George the Fourth , then Prince of Wales , was Grand Master ; and such was the vitality of this lodge in those early days that before it had been established 12 months the brethren were agitating for a new hall , and forthwith
proceeded to lay the foundation-stone on the site of the present hall with much pomp and ceremony , causing considerable stir in the ancient town . The hall was quickly finished , and it was dedicated in 1797 . In 179 S a lodge of emergency was called to consider the propriety of subscribing to a fund for the defence of the nation against " an ambitious , powerful , and detirmined enemy" ( so run
the old minutes ) , this enemy being Napoleon Bonaparte . As a result of this meeting 38 guineas were subscribed . In 1 S 22 the W . M . of the lodge laid the foundation-stone of the Lewes Gas Works , with the full ceremony of the Order . In 1 S 30 the brethren obtained a dispensation from Grand Lodge to appear in full Masonic costume in public , in order to attend in procession with the various public
bodies of the town to welcome King William the Fourth and his Queen , who in that year visited the town , the brethren being entertained later in the day at a good old English dinner by the public officials of the town . The present commodious hall was built in 1 S 6 S , the foundationstone being laid by the present Earl of Chichester , then
Prov . G . M . of Sussex . The lodge is now in a very satisfactory state , both financially and numerically , it being the next to the largest lodge in the province , _ We congratulate the South Saxon Lodge on its past history and its present position , and trust the brethren may all be spared to receive and wear the centenary jewel .
