The Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of England and Wales , & c , will hold their Regular Quarterly Communication at Mark Masons' Hall , on Tuesday , the 5 th instant . The business includes the election of a Grand Master and Grand Treasurer for

the ensuing year , there being two candidates for the latter office . The report of the General Board announces the appointment of Bro . Lord Henry Cavendish Bentinck to be Prov . Grand Mark Master for Cumberland and Westmorland , in succession to

the late lamented Bro . the Earl of Bective . It also refers in terms of the deepest regret to the death of Bro . Col . G . Noel Money , C . B ., Prov . G . Mark Master for Surrey . The Board likewise recommend that lodges 270 and 335 , having failed to comply with the

requirements of Article 150 , Mark Book of Constitutions , be erased from the list of lodges . Be it added that the candidates for the office of Grand Treasurer

are Bros . Percy Wallis and Capt . Thomas Chas . Walls . There were originally three , but as will be seen from a letter in our correspondence columns , Bro . W . F . Lamonby has withdrawn his candidature .

It is announced in connection with the Fund of Benevolence that the day appointed for the celebration of the 27 th Annual Festival of the Mark Benevolent Fund , is Wednesday , the ioth July . We have before mentioned that Bro . Lord Skelmersdale will be the chairman on the occasion .

» * It is with unfeigned satisfaction that we are again enabled to sincerely congratulate Miss Davis and those who wurk with her , and no less the governing body , and the whole body of Governors and Subscribers of

the Girls' School on the highly favourable nature of the Repoit ( just issued ) of the Cambridge Local Examiners . Twenty-three senior girls were sent up for examination in December . The tvholc of these have passed , eight " honours " and eleven " distinctions " being announced

in addition . At the same time 54 girls ( younger and less advanced ) went in for tbe College ol Preceptors Examination , and of these 48 have proved successful . A magnificent result of what must have b ? en a year of careful instruction on the part of the teachers , and honest work on that of Ihe Girls .

WE ARE UI . AD to announce a great success of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys in the Cambridge Local Examinations , held in December last .

The results having just reached us , we observe with much pleasure that in the Senior Examinations , one second class , and in the Junior , thiee seconds , three thirds and 20 passes , making a total of 27 certificates .

Grand Master s Council ( No . 1 ) . —A meeting of this council was held at Mark Masons' Hall , Great Queen-street , on the 22 nd ult . Among those who attended were Comps . George Powell , T . l . M . ; R . L . Loveland , J . P ., P . T . I . M . ; A . McDowall , P . C . W . ; Major W . B . Williamson , J . P ., C . of C . ; J . J . Pakes , G . Gregory , John Smith , F . Groves , Capt . T . C . Walls , Recorder ; and E . Mills , O . S .

The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and conlirmed , Comp . A . McDowall was unanimously elected T . l . M . ; George Graveley , P . T . I . M ., Treas . ; and E . Mills , O . S . A vote of thanks was passed and ordered to be entered on the minutes to Comp . G . Powell for his services as T . l . M . The resignation of Comp . W . Shurmur was received with regret . It having been

reported that Comp . H . J . Lardner had recently suffered a domestic bereavement , it was moved by the Thrice Illustrious Master , seconded by Comp . R . L . Loveland , and carried unanimously : " That the council having heard with great regret of the death of the wife of Comp . H . J . Lardner , T . I . M ., desire to convey to him their condolence upon the sid bereavement he has sustained . " This

resolution was ordered to be entered on the minutes , and a copy sent to Comp . Lardner . Communications regretting inability to attend were received from Comps . Lieut .-Col . G . Lambert , P . T . I . M . ; Baron de Ferrieres , P . T . I . M . ; the Rev . Dr . Lemon , P . G . Chap . ; G . Graveley , P . T . I . M . ; D . P . Cama , S . H . Parkhouse , J . J . Thomas , II . II . THE "LAMBTON" JEWEL . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Answering Bro . Hughan ' s query as to jewel of the Lambton Lodge , No . 521 ( now 375 ) it is no wonder it is scarce and not in Bro . Shackle ' s collection ,

nor indeed any other , considering the nature of the by-law of the lodge . 1 may say , in passing , it is still worn by the members and highly prized . Quoting from the by-laws of 1 S 25 , compiled in 1834 by Bro . Sir Cuthbert Sharp , the famous antiquarian , author of " Freemasonry in the Province of Durham , " and the

Treasurer of the Lodge XVII . " His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex , M . W . Grand Master , having instituted a mark of distinction ( in commemoration of His Royal Highness ' s visit to the Province of Durham in 1832 ) for Master Masons members of the Lambton Lodge , which can only be conferred by the Master ;

each brother on receiving this badge of distinction shall pay to the Treasurer the sum of five guineas . On his demise , or in case of his withdrawing his name from the lodge , the medal shall be returned to the Treasurer , who shall refund the five guineas . May I now refer to your copy of 9 th inst ., par > c 75 , Pattison Chapter , No . 913 , in which the following passage occurs : " The ritual is that of Comp . the Rev . Thomas Robinson , M . A ., P . G . Chap . Kent , an erudite Hebrew schola .- , and is utterly dissimilar in its applications to any of the other chapter

workings of the Metropolitan area , and they , the workings of the M . A ., are depressingly dissimilar to each other . " Will any brother or companion enlightem me on the meaning of the above quoted passage . 1064 ] — THE "LAMBTON LODGE" MEDAL . Thanks to the courteous Provincial Grand Secretary of Durham ( Bro . Robert Hudson , P . G . S . B . ) , I have received full particulars of the medal worn by the members of the " Lambton Lodge , " No . 375 , Chesterle-street , by permission of the Grand Master , H . R . H . the Duke oi Sussex , and of which an engraving is

g iven of the obverse on the title page of " Freemasonry in the Province of Durham , " 1836 . In addition to the information noted in the Freemason of the 9 th February , 1895 , 1 may say that the medal is of gold , the size being 23 { in sixteenths of an inch ) , and has the arms of the Duke of Sussex , resting nr » blue enamel with motto on garter which encloses th " shield . The reverse is engraved as already stated . The

decoration is still worn by the brethren of the lodge , and a reproduction thereof will appear in the Transactions of the "Quatuor Coronati" Lodge , No . 2076 , as soon as possible with an article by me on the subject . The ribbon to which the medal is attachedl is of dark green bordered with crimson . I am much indebted for all the trouble Bro . Hudson has taken in the matter , and beg to also thank Dr . Drury for sending me another of the jewels for my inspection . W . J . HUGHAN .

THE "LAMBTON" JEWEL . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Answering Bro . Hughan ' s query as to jewel of the Lambton Lodge , No . 521 ( now 375 ) it is no wonder it is scarce and not in Bro . Shackle ' s collection ,

nor indeed any other , considering the nature of the by-law of the lodge . 1 may say , in passing , it is still worn by the members and highly prized . Quoting from the by-laws of 1 S 25 , compiled in 1834 by Bro . Sir Cuthbert Sharp , the famous antiquarian , author of " Freemasonry in the Province of Durham , " and the

Treasurer of the Lodge XVII . " His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex , M . W . Grand Master , having instituted a mark of distinction ( in commemoration of His Royal Highness ' s visit to the Province of Durham in 1832 ) for Master Masons members of the Lambton Lodge , which can only be conferred by the Master ;

each brother on receiving this badge of distinction shall pay to the Treasurer the sum of five guineas . On his demise , or in case of his withdrawing his name from the lodge , the medal shall be returned to the Treasurer , who shall refund the five guineas . May I now refer to your copy of 9 th inst ., par > c 75 , Pattison Chapter , No . 913 , in which the following passage occurs : " The ritual is that of Comp . the Rev . Thomas Robinson , M . A ., P . G . Chap . Kent , an erudite Hebrew schola .- , and is utterly dissimilar in its applications to any of the other chapter

workings of the Metropolitan area , and they , the workings of the M . A ., are depressingly dissimilar to each other . " Will any brother or companion enlightem me on the meaning of the above quoted passage . 1064 ] — THE "LAMBTON LODGE" MEDAL . Thanks to the courteous Provincial Grand Secretary of Durham ( Bro . Robert Hudson , P . G . S . B . ) , I have received full particulars of the medal worn by the members of the " Lambton Lodge , " No . 375 , Chesterle-street , by permission of the Grand Master , H . R . H . the Duke oi Sussex , and of which an engraving is

g iven of the obverse on the title page of " Freemasonry in the Province of Durham , " 1836 . In addition to the information noted in the Freemason of the 9 th February , 1895 , 1 may say that the medal is of gold , the size being 23 { in sixteenths of an inch ) , and has the arms of the Duke of Sussex , resting nr » blue enamel with motto on garter which encloses th " shield . The reverse is engraved as already stated . The

decoration is still worn by the brethren of the lodge , and a reproduction thereof will appear in the Transactions of the "Quatuor Coronati" Lodge , No . 2076 , as soon as possible with an article by me on the subject . The ribbon to which the medal is attachedl is of dark green bordered with crimson . I am much indebted for all the trouble Bro . Hudson has taken in the matter , and beg to also thank Dr . Drury for sending me another of the jewels for my inspection . W . J . HUGHAN .
