All the brethren knew him and the work he had done for Masonry . He wished him a very successful and happy year of office . Bro . Lennox Browne , W . established he had been preceded by several distinguished members of the medical profession who were also distinguished Alasons , each of whom had done his work in a manner that had made him desirous to do his work in the chair as well as possible , and to show that he did not want to shirk it . He would introduce one or two candidates at the next meeting , and then he was going to do the work himself . This time next year he hoped to perform the

ceremony of installation , and in the I . P . AI . he would have an excellent assistant . The brethren had acknowledged the services of Dr . Brodie by presenting him with a jewel . He ( Bro . Bros . Vincent and Massey acknowledged the toast of " The Visitors , " which was proposed in most cordial and kindly terms by the W . AL Bro . Lennox Browne , in proposing the toast of " The Past Masters , " said tbat those brethren formed at present but a short roll , but they were nevertheless a worthy band . He was deeply grateful to Dr . Brodie for installing him . Bro . Brodie was well up in Alasonic work , and some years

ag _ took a section of the lectures in the Craft in the Emulation Lodge of Improvement . Bros . Kiallrnark and Ninnis were also invaluable , and he hoped that next year thebrethren would find another brother not altogether unworthy to be associated with them . He then suggested that the warrant of the lodge should be endorsed every year by the W . M .

of the lodge , and offered to present a morocco case in which to keep it . It would be an interesting memento years hence . Bros . Dr . Brodie and Ninnis replied . The toast of " The Officers " and the Tyler's toast closed the proceedings of a very pleasant evening .

BRO . AIOSES BENNETT . Bro . Moses Bennett , one of the old members of the Panmure Lodge , No . 715 , we regret to say died on Wednesday morning , after a short illness . Hc was one of the best known of the London shorthand writers , and had followed that calling for more than half a century . He died in his 69 th year . The

whole of the male portion of the family were brought up as shorthand writers , but there is only one of the brothers now surviving , and he , in conjunction with a nephew , is still pursuing the same calling . All the family made considerable mark in their profession . Bro . Moses Bennett attached himself in early life to the firm of G . and N . Cherer , which he never

afterwards left , and at the time of his death he was the senior partner in that firm , which was carried on under the title of Cherer , Bennett , and Davis , the firm which took the official notes in the Tichborne case . Bro . Moses Bennett was as well known on the Western Circuit as he was in metropolitan legal circles , and as a genial , kindly-hearted , charitable man , with nn immense fund of anecdote , will be long remembered .

THE SHADWELL CLERKE TRUST .

FREEMASONS' HALL , GREAT QUEEN STREET , W . C , Sth February , 1 S 92 . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , VVe regret to inform you that the Widow of our late much lamented Grand Secretary , Col . Shadwell H . Clerkehas been left very inadequately provided for .

, A Committee of Grand Officers and others , who have had many opportunities of knowing how conscientiously , efficiently and courteously Col . Clerke discharged all the duties of his important office , and the eminent services he has rendered to Alasonry , has been formed for the purpose of inviting Lodges and Brethren to show their appreciation of his high character and services by joining with them in

raising a Fund for the purchase of a Government Life Annuity for Airs . Clerke . We send herewith a List of the Committee who have already given their names , to which additions are solicited . The Most Worshipful Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom ; the R . W . Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of Alount Edgcumbe ; and Sir Albert VV . Woods ( Garter ) ,

P . G . W ., G . D . C , have kindly consented to act as Trustees , and an account will be opened immediately in their names at the Bloomsbury Branch of the London and Westminster Bank . Personal Subscriptions are limited to a maximum of £ 5 5 s . In the case of Lodges , Chapters , and other Masonic Bodies there is no limit . Cheques are requested to be sent ,

addressed to the Treasurer , Bro . Robert Grey , Freemasons Hall , Great Queen-street , W . C , made payable to him , and crossed "London and Westminster Bank , Bloomsbury Branch , o / a Shadwell Clerke Trust . " Inasmuch as Bro . George Kenning has kindly undertaken

to insert advertisements in the breemason free of expense , and as the cost of Printing , Stationery , Postage and Receipt Stamps , & c , will be paid by Alembers of the Committee , the whole amount of Subscriptions , without any deduction , will be available for the proposed object . We remain , Dear Sir and Brother ,

Yours fraternally , THOAIAS FENN , Pres . B . of G . P ., Cha ' uman . ROBERT GREY , Pres . B . of B ., T . easurer . FRANK RICHARDSON , P . G . D ., Secretary .

"SHADWELL CLERKE TRUST . " To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , The reference in the newspapers to Col . Shadwell Gierke ' s will having caused some misconception as to the income left to Airs . Clerke , we think it rig ht to state that we have been furnished with a list

of the securities in which the personal estate was invested . Their value at present prices is £ 10 , 461 8 s . This includes the . £ 1000 mentioned in the will , of which Mrs . Clerke has the testamentary disposition , and also a policy for _ £ iooo , payment of which is in question . The sum of , £ 10 , 461 bs . invested in securities suitable for trusts would yield a yearly income of £ 310 .

Out of this by the will £ 100 a year is to be paid to each of the sons , and the balance to Airs . Clerke on condition she provides a home for and maintains the daughter . Should the policy money not be received , the balance will be reduced to £% o a year . Mrs . Clerke has a small entailed property of her own in Ireland which brings in a precarious income , the

average of the last two years being . 6 * 33 10 s . So far as we are able to learn , the whole of her income will therefore be either £ 243 or £ 213 to provide a home and maintain herself and daughter , which is sufficient to show that for a lady in her position she " has been left very inadequately provided for . " When the will was read it was believed that Mrs .

Clerke was left a life interest in her husband ' s real estate in Ireland , but this appears not to have been legally carried out , and it is to fulfil , to some extent , the evident intention of Col . Clerke that " The Shadwell Clerke Trust" has been formed . The brethren to whom our circular was addressed

are reminded that the case was not put before them as one of Charity , nor were they solicited for subscriptions . They were invited to join with the Committee in testifying by the purchase of a life annuity for Mrs . Clerke " their appreciation of Col . Gierke ' s high character and services . "—Yours fraternally ,

to insert advertisements in the breemason free of expense , and as the cost of Printing , Stationery , Postage and Receipt Stamps , & c , will be paid by Alembers of the Committee , the whole amount of Subscriptions , without any deduction , will be available for the proposed object .
