THE MARQUIS OF DUFFERIN , who , whilst staying at Southsea , was confined to his room for a few days by a severe cold , was able to leave for London on Saturday last . His Lordship was accompanied by Lady Dufferin . THE M ITRE HOTEL , HAMPTON COURT . —This noted and favourite place of

resort during the summer months is still in the hands of the family of the late Bro . C Sadler , whose connection with it had reached to nearly half a centuryat the time of his death . Mrs . Sadler has purchased the freehold of the extensive premises , and , with the aid of her sons , Messrs . W . A . and T . P . Sadler , will carry on the business exactly as before .

THE WHOLE EDITION of Bro . David Willox ' s " Poems and Sketches , dedicated to Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . S . G . D . of England , has been subscribed for , consisting of loco copies . Miss J ULIE PETERSEN , the Danish concert flute soloist , gave her first concert at Steinway Hall on Tuesday evening , the 29 th ult . She has had the honour of appearing at Marlborough House by command of H . R . H . the Princess of Wales , having already achieved great success both in New York and Copenhagen . The fair debutante appears to have the thorough mastery of her instrument , and plays with great taste and feeling , and her execution is clear and brilliant . She was ably assisted by Miss Mildred VVrighton , Mr . Lawrence Kellie , and Mr . A . E . Webb ( vocalists ) , Mr . Bernhard Carrodus ( violin ) , and Miss Catherine Low ( pianoforte ) .

THK DUKE OF CONNAUGHT and the oflicers engaged returned to Aldershot on Saturday last , at the conclusion of the Staff tour . Despite the inclemency of the weather operations were carried out each day . The Duke of Connaught directed the work , the main idea of which was to exeicise commanders in manu-uvre work . His Royal Highness , accompanied by Colonel Talbot Coke , D . A . G ., and Capt . M . McNeil , A . D . C , inspected on Cove Common the detachment of Oxlord University Volunteers , who have been undergoing a week's training at Aldershot .

H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES presented , at Cannes , on Saturday last , the prizes won at the GoH Tournament recently held there . The Town Cup and the Grand Duke Michael's Prize were both carried off by Mr . Hillyard , who also , with Mrs . Schenley as his partner , won the Prince of Wales ' s Prize . After the awards had been

distributed , the whole party sat down to luncheon , during which the ban ! of the 112 th Kegiment of the line played . Among the guests were thi Grand Duke . Michael , the Grand Duke Sergius , the Duke of Cumberland , Lord Rendel , and Bro . Lord Glenesk . The Prince of Wales , in a short speech , spoke in high terms of the town of Cannes , and proposed a toast to the prosperity of the Golf Club .

A SEVERE thunderstorm broke over Cimiez on Saturday night last , and on Sunday morning the weather was overcast , with drizzling rain . At 11 o ' clock service was held in the Queen's private chapel , the Bishop of Ripon officiating . THE LORD CHAMBERLAIN ( Bro . the Earl of Lathom ) is authorised to state that Drawing Rooms will be held , under the usual regulations , at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday , May ioth next , and on a further day to be hereafter announced . The names of ladies to be presented at these Drawing Rooms cannot be received at the Lord Chamberlain ' s Ollice until Thursday , the 14 th inst .

AT A MEETING , on Monday , of the Moderate members of the London County Council , it was announced that Bro . Lord Onslow , owing to his many engagements , was unable to continue his position as leader of the party . A hearty vote of thanks was passed to his lordship for his great services during the past three years , and it wis resolved not to elect a chairman of the party until Lord Onslow ' s return from ths Continent , when it was hoped he might reconsider his decision .

BRO . J ROHERTS , of Maenheere , the Lizard , and 44 , Gutter-lane , London , has recently been the recipient of a high Masonic appointment ( Past Prov . S . G . W . ) in commemoration of her Majesty ' s Jubilee , which honour was conveyed to him by the Prov . Grand Master , Bro . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , the authority having been granted by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., on the recommendation of the Grand Lodge of England . To mark the event , and as an expression of esteem , the

brethren of Prosperity Lodge , No . 65 , of which Bro . Roberts has been for many years Treasurer , have presented him with a set of provincial clothing and a jewel of oflice , whilst Bro . Prof . Shuttleworth , representing the Cornish Lodge , No . 2369 , presented him with a collar jewel appropriately inscribed . Bro . John Roberts was a founder of the Cornish Lodge , and has been for a great many years a generous supporter of the Masonic Charities .

AMONGST H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES ' S future engagements is a visit to Reading on Saturday , June nth , when he will open the new buildings of the University Extension College in that town . The Prince , who will be accompanied by the Duke of York , will be entertained at luncheon by Bro . Lord Wantage in the Town Hall , and , after the function , will proceed to Lockinge House—celebrated for its beautiful gardenswhere he will be the guest of his lordship and Lady Wantage until the following Monday . The last visit of the Prince of Wales to Lockinge took place in 1 S 77 , when he unveiled the statue of King Alfred at Wantage , and , accompanied by the Princess , stayed

from Saturday till Monday with Hro . Lord Wantage , who was for some time Equerry to his Royal Highness . This will be the fourth visit paid by the Prince of Wales to Reading , the last occasion being in December , 1 S 90 , when he installed the late Duke of Clarence as Provincial Grand Master of the Berkshire Freemasons . The Prince will probably go to Newmarket for the Craven week , and come to Marlborough House for the season on the 1 Sth inst . During the third week in May , he will be the guest of Lord and Lady Gerard at Garswood Park , and during his visit he will inspect at Southport the Lancashire Hussars , of which Lord Gerard is colonel . On May 20 th , he will inspect the Royal Bucks Hussars in Grove Park , Buckinghamshire .

Miss J ULIE PETERSEN , the Danish concert flute soloist , gave her first concert at Steinway Hall on Tuesday evening , the 29 th ult . She has had the honour of appearing at Marlborough House by command of H . R . H . the Princess of Wales , having already achieved great success both in New York and Copenhagen . The fair debutante appears to have the thorough mastery of her instrument , and plays with great taste and feeling , and her execution is clear and brilliant . She was ably assisted by Miss Mildred VVrighton , Mr . Lawrence Kellie , and Mr . A . E . Webb ( vocalists ) , Mr . Bernhard Carrodus ( violin ) , and Miss Catherine Low ( pianoforte ) .

H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES presented , at Cannes , on Saturday last , the prizes won at the GoH Tournament recently held there . The Town Cup and the Grand Duke Michael's Prize were both carried off by Mr . Hillyard , who also , with Mrs . Schenley as his partner , won the Prince of Wales ' s Prize . After the awards had been

AT A MEETING , on Monday , of the Moderate members of the London County Council , it was announced that Bro . Lord Onslow , owing to his many engagements , was unable to continue his position as leader of the party . A hearty vote of thanks was passed to his lordship for his great services during the past three years , and it wis resolved not to elect a chairman of the party until Lord Onslow ' s return from ths Continent , when it was hoped he might reconsider his decision .

AMONGST H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES ' S future engagements is a visit to Reading on Saturday , June nth , when he will open the new buildings of the University Extension College in that town . The Prince , who will be accompanied by the Duke of York , will be entertained at luncheon by Bro . Lord Wantage in the Town Hall , and , after the function , will proceed to Lockinge House—celebrated for its beautiful gardenswhere he will be the guest of his lordship and Lady Wantage until the following Monday . The last visit of the Prince of Wales to Lockinge took place in 1 S 77 , when he unveiled the statue of King Alfred at Wantage , and , accompanied by the Princess , stayed

from Saturday till Monday with Hro . Lord Wantage , who was for some time Equerry to his Royal Highness . This will be the fourth visit paid by the Prince of Wales to Reading , the last occasion being in December , 1 S 90 , when he installed the late Duke of Clarence as Provincial Grand Master of the Berkshire Freemasons .
