9 . REPORT OF THE BOARD OF GENERAL PURPOSES . To the United Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of England . The Board beg to report that in accordance with the resolution of the Grand Lodge at the Quarterly Communication in December last , 13 lodges in foreign parts , having failed to make returns for many years , were summoned to show

cause why they should not be erased . Of these , the warrants of the following lodges have been returned : No . 447 . Pythagoras , Corfu . I . No . 1014 . Dekran , Smyrna . 896 . La Victoire , Smyrna . | ' 34 ° . Sion , Smyrna . The Board therefore recommend that these lodges be row erased .

The W . M . of the Homer Lodge , No . 806 , Smyrna , reports that No . 952 , St . John ' s , Smyrna , has not worked since 1864 , and there is no trace of the warrant . That he believes No . 978 , Eleusinian , Ephesus , was never opened , and he can find no trace of the warrant . That no one knows what became of the warrant of No . 1015 , St . George ' s , Smyrna , which has made no return since 1 S 67 . No answers have been received from the following : No . 550 , Armistad Unida , New Granada , last return 1857 .

„ 672 , Southern Cross , Pernambuco , last return 1871 . 11 73 <> i British , Mauritius , last return 1887 . „ 1183 , Phoenix , New Amsterdam , Berbice , last return 18 74 . 11 1535 , Mauritius Lodge of Harmony , Port Louis , Mauritius , last return 1884 . The Board recommend that all the above-named lodges be now erased .

With respect to No . 806 , "Homer , Smyrna , the W . M ., Bro . Thomas Hall , writes that the lodge has been closed for some time for want of members , but they hope to begin work again . The lodge was held at the English Club , Smyrna . It made returns during 28 years , and is now six years in arrear . As there appears to be some expectations of its resuscitations , the Board recommend that this lodge be not erased .

The Board have received from Bro . John Lane , the author of " Masonic Records , " an offer of the copyright of the second edition of this work on the sole condition that it be printed in his own name as author and under his supervision , and that 500 copies be printed and sold at one guinea each ; this work is a register of lodges in all parts of the world that have emanated from the several

Grand Lodges of England , from 1717 down to the year of publication , 1886 . It gives the dale of warrant , the various numbers and names the lodges have borne , with the different places of meeting , and , if erased , the date of erasure , with other particulars that can be briefly set forth . Many years of patient labour and careful research were spent by the compiler in its preparation , and it is perhaps the most useful Masonic work ever published .

To the Secretarial Department of the Grand Lodge it is simply invaluable , giving as it does , infoimation at a glance which otherwise could only be obtained , if at all at the cost of much time and research . The book has been out of print some years , and ever since its issue Bro . Lane has been collecting materials for a new and revised edition which will contain many hundreds of important corrections , and will also include all lodges warranted down to the present time . A revised edition of 500 copies with the additional matter would probably cost about £ 350 or . £ 400 .

, The Board strongly recommend the Grand Lodge to accept Bro . Lane ' s generous offer of the copyright of this work , and to authorise the Board to order the printing of 500 copies under Bro . Lane ' s superintendence , and to publish them at the price of one guinea each . The Board have to report that the following presentations have been made to the Library and Museum since the last meeting ol Grand Lodge , all of which have been accepted with thanks .
