LODGE ALPHA , No . 2014 ( E . C . ) The installation of officers of Lodge Alpha , 2014 ( E . G . ) , Cambridge , took place in the lodge room on the 24 th June . There was a large number of brethren present , including visitors from Auckland , Hamilton , and other Waikato townships . Past Masters Bros . Seabrook , Hartley , Edgecombe , Dey , and Brunskill occupied seats on the dais .

Bro . VVilliam Lodder , D . D . G . M ., installed the W . M ., Bro . T . W . Sargent , after which ceremony the P . M ., assisted by Bro . Brunskill , installed the following officers : Bros . J . W . Russell , S . W . ; H . R . Lyall , J . W . ; J . Simpson , S . D . ; C . Boyce , J . D . ; J . P . Thompson , Treas . ; H . VV .

Westby , Sec ; VV . S . Stewart , I . G . ; and J . Mullions , Tyler . At the close of the installation ceremony the brethren adjourned to a banquet prepared by Bro . Boyce , which eclipsed all his previous efforts at catering . Loyal and fraternal toasts were given in the usual Masonic manner , and a very enjoyable evening wes spent .

LODGE BETA . The installation of officers of Lodge Beta was held on July ist . There was a large gathering of the Craft , some fifty being present . The installation ceremony was performed by Past Masters Bros . Day and Murray , and Past Masters Bros . Primrose , McPherson , Brunskill , and Sergeant were also present . CONSECRATION OF NEW LODGES IN PENNSYLVANIA . Early in September , Bro . E . C Mitchell , M . W . G . M . of Pennsylvania , assisted by his Grand Officers , had the satisfaction of consecrating two new lodges—one at Bangor , in Northampton County , and the other at Riegelsville . There was a large attendance at both ceremonies , and there is every likelihood of the newly-constituted bodies proving

worthy of the Society of which they are now a part . sylvania Railroad Company , for Bangor , where , on their arrival , they were courteously met by Bros . Gershom G . Blake , W . M ., and Raymond Marks , Secretary , of the proposed new lodge . They were at once conducted to the lodge room , and the ceremony of consecrating the new lodge—now known as the Bangor , No . 565—was successfully carried out . The following were afterwards installed

as officers for the year , namely , Bros . Gershom G . Blake , VV . M . ; Robert S . Wagner , S . W . ; Samuel E . Raesby , J . W . ; John Slack , Treas . ; and Raymond Marks , Sec . In the evening a grand visitation of the new lodge was made by the Grand Master , and the ceremony of initiation was rehearsed by the lodge officers , under the superintendence of Bro . Coppee Mitchell .

The Grand Officers having remained the night at Bangor , at the Mansion House , where they were most hospitably tended by Bro . Marks , left early on Saturday morning , the 4 th ult ., for Riegelsville , for the purpose of consecrating the Prosperity Lodge , No . 567 . At the close of the ceremony , which was most impressively carried out , Bros . Edward W . Larch , W . M . ; Alex . S . Jordan , S . W . ; and

Newton S . Rice were severally installed in office , and the proceedings being concluded , the visitors were entertained at dinner , at the Riegelsville Hotel , by the officers and members of the new lodge . After a most agreeable meeting , and the usual toasts , the Grand Officers returned by railway to Philadelphia . The same number of the Keystone contains a most

interesting sketch of Bro . William Adcock , who was the first Grand Master of the independent Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania . Bro . Adcock succeeded Bro . William Ball as Prov . G . Master of the Prov . G . Lodge of Pennsylvania , under our "Ancient" G . Lodge in 17 S 2 , and in 17 S 6 was Chairman of the Committee of Delegates from the different lodges in Pennsylvania which resolved on

setting up the present G . L . of Pennsylvania . He was elected its first G . Master , and so remained till December , 1788 , when he declined re-election , and was succeeded by Bro . Jonathan Bayard Smith . Bro . Adcock died full of years and honours in 1 S 17 , when the Grand Lodge , which he had had a principal hand in establishing , had been in existence for upwards of ^ o years .

GRAND COUNCIL ROYAL AND SELECT MASTERS , NEW YORK . The Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters held annual meeting in the Masonic Hall , New York , on Huesday , the 7 th September last . Comp . J . W . Coburn , G . M ., supported by Comps . J . L . Brothers , D . G . M ., and R . C Christiana , G . P . C . of VV ., presided , and there were

present , in addition to the other Grand Officers and the representatives of 24 subordinate councils , the representatives at the Grand Council of New York of 24 other Grand Councils in the United States . The Grand Council having been opened , and the several Committees appointed , the Grand Recorder ' s report , showing that Cryptic Masonry in

New York was in a very flourishing condition , was read and gave great satisfaction . The Grand Officers were unanimously re-elected for the ensuing year , and installed , and the first Tuesday in September , 1 S 87 , having been fixed for the next annual meeting , which will take place in New York , Grand Council was closed .

GRAND CHAPTER OF PENNSYLVANIA . The Quarterly Convocation of the Grand R . A . Chapter of Pennsylvania was held at the Masonic Hall , Philadelphia , on Thursday , the 2 nd ult ., under the presidency of Comp . Geo . W . Kendrick , M . E . Grand High Priest . In the course of the proceedings the Grand Secretary's report was read , from which it appeared that there

were 107 chapters on the roll of Grand Chapter , with an aggregate membership of 11 , 769 , and three Mark lodges , with a membership of 1521 . Comp . Kendrick announced the deaths of Comp . Andrew W . Cox , D . D ., Grand High Priest , and Comp . Rev . Thomas J . Davis , Grand Chap ., and memorial notices were read in their honour by Comps .

Charles E . Meyer and Ur . Piper respectively . The Degree of R . A . Mason was fully exemplified by the G . H . P . and his G . Officers , and Comp . Kendrick announced that at the next Quarterly Convocation , the Order ot High Priesthood would be fully exemplified . There was a large attendance of G . Officers and companions , all of whom took a deep interest in the proceedings of the meeting .

The worthy citizens of London who have this week entered upon their responsible duties as Sheriffs of London and Middlesex , and the Alderman who , on Wednesday , was chosen to succeed Bro . Lord Mayor Staples as the Chief

Magistrate of the City , happen , as was the case last year , to be members of our Society , and our readers doubtless will be pleased if we give more prominence than usual to events which are not

strictly Masonic , though , from the circumstances we have just recorded , they cannot fail to be of interest to our brother Masons . Indeed , nowadays it seems to be

the rule rather than the exception that the occupants of the offices in question should be Masons , so widespread is our membership among those who win civic honours in the ancient and honourable Corporation of London . However , be this as it may , there is always rejoicing amour / -

membersof the Craft when any brethren have had conferred upon them positions of distinct / on and trust , and for a very good reason—it adds immensely to the fair fame of Freemasonry , when it is known that its members include so many good men and true amongst them . But our present concern is to describe somewhat briefly

THE INAUGURATION OF THE NEW SHERIFFS , Bros . Alderman Isaacs and Lieut .-Col . Kirby , which took place as usual at the Guildhall , on the 28 th ult ., to the gratification of the many worthy citizens and civic dignataries , past , present , and to come , who were there assembled . The favourite Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , was the scene of the preliminary gathering , and there Bros .

Isaacs and Lieut .-Lol . Kirby gave a hearty welcome to thc invited guests as they trooped in in order to take part in the time-honoured ceremony . In due time the procession was formed , an escort of police with a mounted detachment of the Tower Hamlets Engineer Volunteers , followed by the drums and fifes of the regiment , and a guard of honour , leading the way . Next came in their carriages

the Masteis , Wardens , and some of the members of thc several Companies of Spectaclemakers , Shipwrights , Faninakers , and Loriners , each company being attended by its beadle with his staff of office , and thc bands of the ist and 3 rd Middlesex Artillery being introduced at intervals and enlivening the way with some

excellent martial music Ihe State equipages of the Under Sheriffs and Sheriffs completed the cortege , and Guildhall Yard having been reached , the occupants of the carriages made 'heir way into the hall , and the Sheriffs-elect having been formally introduced to thc Court of Aldermen , a procession was made to the Hustings , where , in the presence

of Bro . the Lord Mayor and many of the Aldermen and others , the Town Clerk , Bro . Sir J . B . Monckton , administered the usual declaration to each of the Sheriffsin turn , and their predecessors having taken off their chains of office and placed them on Alderman Isaacs and Lieut .-Col . Kirby , the ceremony was at an end , and the company returned to the Albion , where the usual breakfast , followed by the usual toasts , was served .

The chain of office , with the badge attached , of Bro . Sheriff Lieut .-Col . Kirby was manufactured by Bro . Liverymen of the City of London held in the Guildhall for the purpose of electing a Lord Mayor for the ensuing year . Bro . Lord Mayor Staples presided , and the newly-installed Sheriffs , Bros . Aldermen Isaacs and Lieut .-Col . Kirby were present . Previous to the election , the civic dignitaries attended divine service at the Church of St . Lawrence Jewry , where a sermon was preached by the Lord Mayor ' s Chaplain ; and this duty fulfilled , they returned to the Hall ,

and the Livery proceeded to the election , the names of the Aldermen below the chair who were eligible being read out by the Common Serjeant . From these were chosen two , Bros . Sir Reginald Hanson and De Keyser , and the result having been made known to the Lord Mayor and Aldermen , who in the meantime had retired from the hustings , the latter made choice of Bro . Sir Reginald Hanson , who

accordingly occupies the proud position of Lord Mayor elect of the City of London , and whom accordingly we take leave to congratulate on his well-deserved good fortune . A vote of thanks to the Lord Mayor for his services during the year was unanimously passed , and with a similar compliment to the Ex-Sheriffs , Bros . Aldermen Evans and T . Clarke , the proceedings were brought to a close . THE MASONIC SERVICES OF THE LORD MAYOR-ELECT .

Bro . Alderman Sir Reginald Hanson was initiated in the Prince of Wales Lodge , No . 259 , and was elected to represent it on the Board of Grand Stewards in 1 S 84 . He is also a joining member and Past Master of the Bard of Avon Lodge , No . 77 S , Hampton Court , having been elected to the chair in 18 S 4 , and was one of the founders , in 18 S 2 ,

of the London Rifle Brigade Lodge , No . 19 G 2 , and is still connected with it as an honorary member . He was exalted to the Royal Aich Degree in the Prince of Wales Chapter , No . 259 , on Oth June , 1879 , and has had many other opportunities of showing his interest in Freemasonry , having served on the Board of General Purposes , and having qualified as a Life Governor of our three Institutions , with a Festival Stewardshin in the case of each of the Schools .
