trusted it might ever be so . It was as it should be , and he should do his best to forward the interests of the lodge . He had a great love for it , for Freemasonry as exemplified in their lodge was to him a very great pleasure in life . It enhanced the pleasuresof this life , and smoothed many a rough path to know there were many good and true brethren who were willing to support and help him in any difficulties . He trusted to be long spared to be a member and witness the prosperity of the lodge , and from the very bottom of his heart he thanked them one and all .
Bro . Rev . F . Haslock , P . P . G . Chap . Essex , acknowledged "The Visitors" in a humorous speech . He had found that evening that he was not only a Clerk in Holy Orders , but that he was also a dwarf amongst giants , and he had expected that one of the giants would have been called upon to respond . It brought to his mind the story of / "Esop , who was exhibited for sale between two giant looking men . A purchaser came along and asked the man on his left what he could do , and he replied " Anything , " and the man on his right gave a similar answer . On being asked what he could do , / Esop said that the friends on his right and left could do anything , there was nothing left for
him to do . They were sometimes charged with introducing in the church music of which the congregation could not understand a word , but that evening in the lodge they had not only had music , but also the words . It biought to his mind the old story of the Scotch lady who was anxious to hear how English folk managed to sing the good old Psalms . After listening for some time , she said right out : " VVeel , weel ! I can quite understand why Saul threw the javelin at David when he sang the Psalms . " In conclusion , he said the lodge meeting had impressed upon his mind one fact—that there was no body of men in the world who so thoroughly understood that great principle of brotherly love and hospitality .
Bro . W . J . Butler , P . P . G . D . C . Norfolk ( brother of the W . M . ) , also replied , and expressed his gratitude to the W . M . forcoupling his name , and his sorrowthat Providence had not given him the same amount of eloquence as his brother in the chair possessed . He heartily congratulated the lodge on its progress , for it not only possessed many members , but there was also existing a good Masonic feeling . It was a great gratification to him to see his brother in the chair , for if he was not worthy ot the post he would not be holding it . He trusted the lodge would have a larger success in the future than it had had in the past .
"The Treasurer and Secretary afforded the W . M . an opportunity of referring to the excellent services rendered by Bro . Hobrow , Treasurer , and Bro . Mirrian , the indefatigable Secretary , whose heart and soul were in the lodge , and no trouble was too great for him to take for its benefit . Bro . Hobrow , Treasurer , having replied , and stated that the finances were in a good position , Bro . C J . Marrian , Secretary , responded , and said that as in the past , his energies and services were at the disposal of the lodge . Bros . Stanley Machin , S . W ., and W . G . Greig , J . W ., duly answered for "The Officers . "
The W . M . then proposed " The Installing Master , " and stated that Bro . Robson was the first Master of the lodge , and started it in the right direction . Bro . Robson was a good and true Mason in the very best sense of the word , and they all appreciated him as such . Bro . C E . Robson , P . M ., in response , said he was extremely gratified at the kind way in which he had always been received in the lodge , and also at being able to install the W . M . that evening . They were both initiates about the same time , but he had always looked up to the W . M . for all guidance . He should always be ready to do what he could for the lodge , but with such a Master and officers there would be little for him to dn .
Bro . Bartley Denniss , Prov . G . Stwd . Middx ., answered for "The Masonic Charities" and afterwards gave an account of his Masonic experiences in Norway . From the moment it was found he was a Mason and after he had been in a lodge in Bergen he knew everybody and met smiling greetings everywhere . Every Mason wore a collar as well as a badge , and carried a sword . The D . C . put him through the proper tests and everything passed satisfactorily , and he was ushered into the lodge rooms , ln addition to the collars and swords , all the officers wore silk hats of rather antiquated shape , and the ceremony was all read . After the close , all sung "Auld Lang Syne , "
all singing * the refrain in Norwegian . They afterwards adjourned to supper , and although Norway was sometimes supposed to be a teetotal country , one bottle of whiskey was served to every four . When it was found what his Masonic rank was in England he had an enthusiastic reception , and he was asked to convey to his lodge " Hearty good wishes . " King Oscar is the first Mason in Norway , and was the only member of a Degree he had created for himself . The W . M . of a Norwegian lodge was W . M . until he died or resigned , which was a custom capable of improvement . The toasts were given in an impressive way . The orator , after describing the virtues of the W . M ., calls
upon the brethren to drink his health in a three-fold manner , first , because he is a real good fellow j secondly , because they are delightedfeto see him in the chair j and thirdly , to wish him all prosperity . They then conclude with " Viva" three times . He ( Bro . Denniss ) thought they could not better conclude than by saluting their W . M . in this fashion . The Tyler's toast closed the proceedings . The Cynthia Quartette and Bro . Lovett King carried out the excellent musical arrangements .

trusted it might ever be so .
