The Herschel Lodge , No . 1894 , at Slou gh , has recently been presented with a portrait of the illustrious astronomer , Sir William Herschel , from whom the lodge takes its name . Thc picture , which is an oil painting handsomely framed , is the gift of Sir William Herschel , thc grandson of the astronomer , and has been received by the lodge with gratitude and satisfaction . Undoubtedly thc

people of Slough and its neighbourhood are ever ready to take pride in the fact that so renowned and famous an astronomer once dwelt in their town , and there followed his favourite pursuit , and that discoveries invaluable to the scientific world , and of great interest to all posterity , were made by him whilst living at the well-known house on the Windsor-road , which also hears his name . This has been acknowledged by the brethren on the founding of a lodge

in the town , and they have chosen for the distinguishing name of . the lodge that ol the great astronomer . They , therefore , fully appreciate the great compliment received at the hands of Sir William Herschel , by the presentation of this portrait , which will be placed in the lodge room . The picture , at the request of the present baronet , bears the inscription : "Wilhelm Herschel , ob . 25 th August , 1 S 22 , presented by his grandson . "
