PROVINCIAL MEETINGS .

HEATON NORRIS . Egerton Lodge ( No . 1030 ) . —The first regular meeting ( after the installation of Bro . Wilson as VV . M . in October lasl ) of this most prosperous lodge was held at the George Hotel , on Monday , Ihe 20 th ult . The brethren met at an early hour , having a large amount of business on the

summons . The lodge was opened by the W . M ., and after the minutf s were read and confirmed , the ballot was taken for Bro . Albert E . Broome as a joining member , and declared in his favour . Mr . F . C Rogers was initiated by Bro . Abraham Pemberton , P . M , P . P . G . D . C . The ballot was then taken for Mr . VV . B . Bale , and being declared

favourable , be was initiated by Bro . H . Wilson , VV . M ., vvho afterwards raised . Bro . Herbert R . Greaves to the Sublime Degree of a M . M ., delivering to him the traditional history altogether in a manner which was much admired as showing thc great ability Bro . Wilson possesses as an exponent of the ritual of Freemasonry . The charge in the First Degree was delivered by Bro . Thos . Knott , I . P . M ., Sec , the

working tools in this Degree being presented and explained by Bro . Alfd . VV . Pemberton , J . W ., and those of the Third Degree by Bro . G . B . Goodfellow , S . W . Bro . Wm . A . Vaughan , P . M ., acted as Deacon for the three candidates in a manner which could not fail to impress them vvith the seriousness and responsibility of the duties of Freemasonry . The duties of Director of Ceremonies were admirably

carried out by Bro . J . W . Abbott , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , Charity Representative , who , during the evening , proposed that the usual annual donation of £ 10 be voted from the Charity Fund of the lodge to _ the East Lancashire Systematic Benevolent and Educational Institution , also that £ 5 be voted to the widow of a decea'ed brother in necessitous circumstances , both propositions being

unanimously endorsed by the members , who , indeed , seem to be imbued vvith the virtue that Charity is the first principal of Freemasonry . " Hearty good wishes " were tendered by the Prov . G . Officers and the visiting brethren , and the lodge was closed after a most pleasant evening . The following brethren were present : Bros . H . Wilson , W . M . ; G . B . Goodfellow , S . W . ; A . W . Pemberton ,

J . W . ; the Rev . C VV . Lloyd Evans , Chap . ; H . Smith , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., Treas . ; T . Knott , I . P . M ., Sec . ; F . T . Burgess , S . D . ; W . Marnott , J . D . ; J . W . Abbott , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , D . C . ; F . Burdett , I . G . ; Abraham Pemberton , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C . ; W . A . Vaughan , P . M . ; R . B . Preston , P . M . ; Geo . L . Vaughan , P . M . ; W . H . Vaughan , P . M ., P . P . G . R ., H . R . Greaves , and H . T . Fisher . Visitors : Bros . Geo . Whittaker , Jas . Robinson ,

W . M . ; G . Broome , Charles Shaw , George Roberts , C . Edmonson , Rev . John Henn , Chap . 2109 ; T . Thornhill Shann , VV . M . 2109 ; George S . Smith , P . M ., Prov . G . Org . ; and W . H . Anderton , l . P . M . At the social board , which was necessarily short ( but most enjoyable ) after the long evening of work , the supper being served in thc well known recherche style of the

George Hotel , The toast ot "The Queen and the Craft" was proposed by the Worshipful Master , and responded to by the brethren as true and loyal Masons . The toast of "The Initiates" was proposed by Bro . Abraham Pemberton , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , vvho , on rising , said he took that opportunity of thanking the W . M . for

having given him two great pleasures that evening , firstly in having asked him to initiate his esteemed friend , Dr . Rogers , into Freemasonry , and again in commanding him to propose the toast of the newly-initiated brethren . He had consulted Bro . Knott , their worthy Secretary , and was informed that upwards of a dozen gentlemen belonging to the medical profession had passed through the various

offices of the lodge since its foundation , and he would like , with the Worshipful Master ' s permission , to claim the attention of the brethren to some remarks which were made by a renowned brother Mason ( Bro . R . F . Gould , P . G . D . Eng ., and the author of "The History of Freemasonry ) " at the conclusion of a most interesting paper read before the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 2076 , London , in June

last , and which he would read from a copy of the Transactions of that lodge . The paper was entitled " Masonic Celebrities—Bro . the Rev . William Stukeley , M . D ., " who was initiated January 6 th , 1 7 21 , and , as the brethren who read that paper would know , was a very eminent Freemason . At the conclusion of the paper , Bro . Gould said : " It had long seemed to him ( Bro . Gould ) that there

were ample materials—if any brother would take the trouble to look for them—for an es . say or article ' On the Medical Profession in connection with Freemasonry , ' and at some future time he hoped to read a paper before the lodge wherein he should attempt to show that the medical profession had contributed more eminent men to the services of Masonry than any other . Such was his ( Bro . Gould ' s )

belief . freemasonry rose at a single bound into notice and estrem on the Duke of Montague accepting the Grand Mastership in 1721 . The Duke was a Fellow of the Roval College of Physicians , as was also the fourth Noble Grand Master , the ' Duke ot Richmond . ' The first Deputy Grand Master was Dr . Bale . The first initiate , after a Masonic torpor of some duration , was Dr . Stukeley . One final

observation he would make , and it was that he ( Ura . Gould ) should be glad to receive particulars of any medical brethren , homo , foreign , or colonial ; in the present or past ; vvho are or were eminent as Masons or practitioners , or in any way whatsoever . " Bro . Pemberton added that on that evening they in the Egerton Lotlje were in a rather unique position , for not only had they amongst their number

an array of medical brethren , as he had before stated , many of whom had risen to eminence both as practitioners and in Miionry , instancing their W . M ., Uro . Dr . Henry Wilson , who had risen from the I . G . of thc lodge through thc vanoin steps of office to fill the chair of K . S . It would be invidious to mention namrs , but he could not refrain from giving the name of Bro , Dr . Wm . Bale , sen . ( the oldest P . M . of the

lodge and one of its founders ) , the father of their youngest candidate of the evening . He concluded by asking the brethren to join him in drinking " The Health of Bro . Dr . Rogers , " his true friend , and one whom he had proved to be endued with true Masonic virtues , before he had the

pleasure of proposing him as a candidate for initiation , and that < . ! Bro . Dr . Bale , as a " worthy son of a worthy sire . " The toast was received by the brethren with honours , and feelingly responded to by Bros . Rogers and Bale . The toast ol "The Newly-raised Bro . Herbert Greaves " ( who bhuilly leaves England for India ) , was proposed by

Provincial Meetings.

Bro . Geo . B . Goodfellow , S . W ., in appropriate terms , and after a . bon voyage being given by the brethren , Bro . Greaves responded , expressing the hope that on his return from Bombay he would be able to spend many pleasant evenings among the brethren of his mother lodge . The toast of "The Worshipful Master" was proposed

by Bro . Wm . A . Vaughan , P . M ., and responded to by the VV . M ., vvho proposed the toast of "The Visiting Brethren , " which was responded to by Bros . S . S . Sharin , W . belief . freemasonry rose at a single bound into notice and estrem on the Duke of Montague accepting the Grand Mastership in 1721 .
