of the chapter . In fact it was his chapter , and he loved everyone connected vvith it . He proposed the health of the officers vvith sincerity and a bumper . Comp . C . O . Burgess , Treas ., replied , saying that he was pleased to state that the funds of the chapter were flourishing and that all was going on well and prosperously , which was a great thing , considering that the chapter was

not of long standing . Comp . G . Reynolds , S . E ., thanked the M . E . Z . for the very kind and flattering terms in which he had proposed his health , and the hearty manner in which the companions had received it . His heart was with the chapter , as he could fay that he was the originator of the chapter , having proposed it in the mother lodge . It was a great pleasure to

know and feel that the chapter was making good and quiet progress . All was going well and satisfactory . The M . E . Z . had said he did not know him , which was a query , When as his companion they had been put into a small cabin onboaidtheCityof Richmond steamer for New York , carrying a testimonial to the M . W . G . M . of Maryland , which the M . E . Z . and himself had done , he thought that the M . E . Z .

knew more about the Scribe E . than most companions . It was a happy time and never to be forgotten , and he should not have the slightest objection to have such another time . The M . E . Z . made a charming companion , and he should always remember him for his kindness . One th : ng he could heart , and he ( the Scribe E . ) would do all in his power for say , that the M . E . Z . had the interest of the chapter at

its future success , and assist him . He was sorry that Bro . W . Dovvnes , of the Covent Garden Lodge , vvho had been unanimously elected , was not with them that evening . He hadbeen called away in the country , but he hoped the companions would see Bro . Dovvnes with them at their next meeting in March .

The other officers spoke , assuring the M . E . Z . they would do all they could in their power to assist him . The Janitor ' s toast brought the evening to a most successful and enjoyable ending . The musical arrangements were under the direction of Comp . W . J . Thrussell , and gave every satisfaction .

Steward on behalf of the R . M . B . I ., and 20 guineas were voted to his list . The Treasurer was authorised to draw a cheque for 20 guineas as a donation to the R . M . I . B . on Comp . Shurmur ' s list . Other business was transacted , and the chapter was closed .

After a well-served banquet , the customary toasts were heartily honoured . Comp . Dr . W . E . Dring , Prov . G . H ., replying for "The Prov . Grand Officers , " said they appreciated the fact that they held a honoured position in the hearts of the companions . Personally , he was sorry he had to leave them early that evening on professional duties , but thanked them

in anticipation of their drinking his health as H . of the chapter . Comp . F . White , P . P . G . J ., also replied , and congratulated the companions on the progress made by the chapter . Comp . W . Shurmur , I . P . Z ., then said that as the Installing Principal it was his privilege to propose the toast of "The M . E . Z . " Their distinguished Comp . Graveley held a high position in Royal ArchCraftand Mark

, , Masonry , and in the latter he had been very properly rewarded with the collar of P . G . Warden . He was a veiy active member of the Board of Benevolence , and had again been nominated for that office , the election for which would take place at the Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge , pn the 6 th December . They hoped his services would

be secured for that Board , for they knew he was brimming over with benevolence , and was the right man in the right place . The M . E . Z . had gained the esteem and regard of every member of the chapter by his devotion to their interests and by the ardent zeal vvith which he had endeavoured and had succeeded in making that chapter a

success . Comp . Geo . Graveley , M . E . Z ., responded , and said if he was only worth one-third of the encomiums passed upon Mm he should be satisfied , but he was afraid he should fail in that . In occupying his present position he felt he was following in the footsteps of the distinguished P . Z . who had placed him in the chair . During his year of office he honed

the companions would bear vvith his shortcomings , and he would render the ceremony as honestly , thoughtfully , and solemnly as he possibly could . He thanked them for electing him to represent them at the Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and for the generous donation voted , which was an excellent one for a young chapter .

Comp . J . Pinder , J ., responded for "The II . and J ., " ar | d thanked the M . E . Z . for his flattering reference to their ° Jd friendship . He had always done his best for the chapter , and would continue to do so . The progres of the chapter had been equal to the progiess of the Shurmur Lodge , and he hrped they should mett with equal success . The M . E . Z . then proposed "The Installing Principal , " jmdsaid last year he had the pleasure of seeing Comp . Shurmur installed as Prov . G . J ., but next year he hoped to

see him installed in another direction . He alluded to the Grand Treasurership of England . He felt sure that if the brethren honoured Comp . Shurmur vvith their confidence , and he was carried in at the top of the poll as they thought he would be , he would do honour to the collar . On behalf of the companions he thanked the l . P . Z . for the hard work he had done during the past 12 months , and asked him to accept a P . Z . ' s jewel , not for its value , but for the kind

and hearty way in which it was voted . They hoped the day would be long . distant before they failed to see him present . Comp . W . Shurmur , I . P . Z ., said it was quite impossible for him to express his grateful appreciation of this very cordial expression of their good feeling and friendship . With regard to the high encomiums which had been passed upon his rendering of the traditional ceremony of

exaltation in the addresses to the Principals at the ceremony of installation , it afforded him the greatest gratification and pleasure to find that he had secured their approbation and given them satisfaction . He had taken a very deep interest in those beautiful ceremonies , and he saw his friend and Preceptor , Comp . Edmonds , present , whom he had to thank for his knowledge of the Royal Arch Degree . It had been said there was a slight difference in the working . He had

attended two chapters of improvement , and in his opinion the meaning was the same , although the verbiage was different . He had faithfully endeavoured to carry out those ceremonies in the way in which he had been taught , and felt bound to say he thought he had succeeded in conferring the Degree in a manner impressive and making a lasting impression on the minds of the candidates . The M . E . Z . had referred to the exertions of a very large circle of

influential friends who had determined that he should be nominated for the very important position of Grand Treasurer . That was of course the highest honour that could be conferred upon any brother . If by their suffrages he was elected to that important position he would strenuously endeavour to prove himself worthy of it . He regarded it as the blue riband of Freemasonry , and if it was their p ' easure to confer it upon him he would work night and day

to prove himself worthy of it . As to his exertions in this chapter he could only say it had afforded him very great pleasure , and if he bad given them satisfaction he was more than repaid for the many hours he had spent in chapters of improvement . He could sincerely commend lo those companions vvho were desirous of becoming proficient the Camden Chapter of Improvement , of which Comp . Edmonds was now the admirable and painstaking Preceptor .

He had to thank them for the handsome P . Z . ' s jewel . He valued it very highly , not only for its intrinsic value , but for the hearty way in which it was voted to him , and he should always regard it as a souvenir of a very happy year of office . He thanked them from the fulness of an overflowing heart . Comps . Rev . Buchanan and Lowry replied for "The

Exaltees , " after which " The Visitors" was given in kindly terms , and duly replied to . "The Masonic Charities" was acknowledged by Comps . Dehane and White , two members of the Essex Provincial Charity Committee , and "The Officers" having been honoured , the Janitor's toast terminated the proceedings .
